Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy, Vol 17(8), Nov 2025, 1593-1596; doi:10.1037/tra0002028

Background: Over the last few decades, a conundrum has emerged in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) research. Several evidence-based psychotherapies (EBPs) have been regularly regarded as first-line treatments for PTSD. However, many treatment seekers have difficulties initiating and completing EBPs. Common barriers to care include limited access to adequately trained clinicians and competing practical demands (e.g., work and/or childcare). Key Arguments: One way to improve EBP completion rates without undermining treatment efficacy has been to deliver EBPs in a massed format. However, given the relative novelty of the model, massed EBPs remain difficult for many patients to access in person. Telehealth has emerged as a viable alternative to in-person treatment that improves access without eroding treatment efficacy. In the United States, access to telehealth has improved as organizations representing mental health professions have greatly expanded the number of states participating in interjurisdictional compacts that allow licensed professionals to provide telehealth across state lines. This expansion allows for increased access to massed EBPs, which should also encourage further research on the implementation of massed treatment across state lines via telehealth, as well as provider and patient attitudes toward adoption. Discussion: By expanding telehealth access across state lines, patients seeking EBPs for PTSD will have an expanded menu of options for their care. Conclusion: In the United States, compacts are transforming the mental health landscape by removing jurisdictional boundaries and facilitating the supply of psychological services to underresourced areas.
Objective: Individuals who experience polyvictimization, or victimization across multiple life contexts, show particularly severe outcomes across a range of mental health diagnoses, potentially related to difficulties in regulating emotion. However, prior research has been limited by reliance on cross-sectional designs and retrospective trait measures of emotion regulation. The present study used ecological momentary assessment to test associations between polyvictimization and emotion regulation in daily life. Method: After completing a baseline survey assessing trauma exposure, mental health symptoms, and trait emotion regulation, undergraduates (N = 122) completed smartphone surveys assessing state emotion regulation four times per day for 14 days. Results: Low correspondence was observed between trait and state measures of emotion regulation. After accounting for baseline mental health symptoms, polyvictimization independently predicted lower scores on an aggregative measure of putatively adaptive strategies (i.e., reappraisal, acceptance, problem solving) in daily life. However, polyvictimization did not predict aggregate scores of putatively maladaptive strategies (i.e., cognitive and expressive suppression, rumination, impulsive behavior, avoidance). Baseline depression and posttraumatic stress predicted higher use of putatively maladaptive strategies. Conclusions: Results suggest polyvictimization may be associated with less use of adaptive emotion regulation in daily life, whereas mental health symptoms may be associated with more use of maladaptive strategies. These findings highlight the utility of experience sampling approaches for increasing insight into emotion regulation difficulties among trauma survivors.

ABSTRACT

Having a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental disorder, poses numerous challenges for parents. These parents experience high levels of parenting stress, resulting in a diminished quality of life. This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-compassion and parenting stress among parents of children with ASD. This descriptive-analytical study was carried out in 2022–2023. The study included 112 parents of children with ASD who sought assistance from autism centres in Isfahan, Iran, and were selected via convenience sampling method. Data collection involved a three-part tool: a demographic information questionnaire, the self-compassion questionnaire (SCS) and the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF). The results revealed that the majority (60.7%) of parents of children with autism had low self-compassion levels. Additionally, more than 88% of participants had moderate to high levels of parenting stress. Pearson’s correlation coefficient indicated that as self-compassion increased among parents of children with autism, parenting stress levels decreased (r = −0.788, p < 0.001). The study demonstrated a significant and negative relationship between self-compassion and parenting stress among parents of children with ASD. Therefore, it is recommended that care plans for this group of parents prioritize the promotion of self-compassion as an effective coping strategy against stress.

Abstract

Teachers play a pivotal role in ensuring the successful implementation of inclusive education within preschool classrooms. However, preschool teachers should present competencies in implementing inclusive education practices. Given the importance of professional development for preschool teachers working in inclusive settings, the training programs developed should align with their needs. In this case, needs assessment is a fundamental tool to identify teachers’ needs. This study aims to determine preschool teachers’ professional development needs regarding inclusive education in Türkiye. A basic interpretive qualitative design was employed for the study. A semi-structured interview was conducted to collect the data from the teachers. In this study, in which sixteen teachers participated, it was found that teachers’ professional development needs emerge within the framework of early childhood inclusion. Access, participation and support are three dimensions that provide the theoretical background for the findings. Within this framework, teachers’ professional development needs for classroom organisation (access), practices to support children’s learning and social relationships (participation) and professional development for inclusive preschool education (support) were addressed and discussed.

Objective: Adverse and benevolent childhood experiences (ACEs and BCEs) impact health across the lifespan. No known study has investigated these associations across different health domains using a representative adult sample. This study examined the associations between adult physical, mental, and behavioral health with ACEs and BCEs based on two ACEs conceptualizations. Method: A cross-sectional population-based survey was conducted in Hong Kong. Thirteen ACEs were measured and conceptualized as cumulative ACE scores and ACE patterns. Self-reports of BCEs; 10 physical health problems; current mental health; posttraumatic stress; history of diagnosed mental illness; suicidal thought and suicide attempt; and engagement in three health risk behaviors (smoking, illicit substance misuse, binge drinking) were also included. A series of regression analyses were conducted to examine the association between childhood experiences and health. Results: In a random sample of 1,070 Hong Kong adults (Mage = 41.78 years; 53.93% female; mean ACEs = 1.64), 649 (60.65%) reported at least one ACE. Four ACE patterns were identified (Low ACEs, Household Instability, Household Violence, and High ACEs). Higher ACE scores associated with poorer health in a dose–response fashion. Two ACE patterns shared similar average ACE scores but differentially linked with outcomes across health domains. High BCEs negatively associated with mental and behavioral health problems. Conclusions: Public health responses to ACEs should consider both the accumulation and co-occurrence of ACE exposure. Schools, neighborhoods, and the wider community should take an active role in helping children and families create more positive experiences as a universal prevention strategy to safeguard population health.

Abstract

The basic local independence model (BLIM) is appropriate in situations where populations do not differ in the probabilities of the knowledge states and the probabilities of careless errors and lucky guesses of the items. In some situations, this is not the case. This work introduces the multiple observed classification local independence model (MOCLIM), which extends the BLIM by allowing the above probabilities to vary across populations. In the MOCLIM, each individual is characterized by proficiency, careless and guessing classes, which are observed and determine the probabilities of knowledge states, careless errors and lucky guesses of a population. Given a particular class type (proficiency, careless, or guessing), the probabilities are the same for populations with the same class but may vary between populations with different classes. Algorithms for maximum likelihood estimation of the MOCLIM parameters are provided. The results of a simulation study suggest that the true parameter values are well recovered by the estimation algorithm and that the true model can be uncovered by comparing the goodness-of-fit of alternative models. The results of an empirical application to data from Raven-like matrices suggest that the MOCLIM effectively discriminates between situations where group differences are expected and those where they are not.

This paper reviews the evidence supporting exercise interventions for fall prevention in older adults, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive, long-term approach. Key modifiable risk factors, such as balance deficits, unsteady gait, and weakness, can be effectively addressed with tailored, high-intensity exercise programs. Incorporation of community evidence-based fall prevention programs into clinical care recommendations may help older adults achieve an adequate exercise dose to achieve fall prevention outcomes. The type, amount, and ability to achieve a sufficient balance challenge vary across community programs. Clinicians should carefully match programs to the individual needs of older adults for best outcomes.

<imgsrc border="0" align="left" alt="image">Objective: </imgsrc>

To quantify the association between neighborhood opportunity and biological aging as measured by epigenetic clocks.

Methods:

This cross-sectional study pooled data from 1205 participants in the Midlife in the United States Biomarker Projects (2004-2016). Neighborhood opportunity was measured continuously based on the Childhood Opportunity Index 3.0, which evaluates census tract conditions across educational, health and environment, and social and economic domains. Biological aging was measured using 3 validated DNA methylation-based indicators: the DunedinPACE, GrimAge2, and PhenoAge. Analyses controlled for the confounding effects of age, sex, race, educational attainment, household income, marital status, perceived neighborhood quality, smoking status, past month alcohol consumption, and body mass index (BMI).

Results:

Participants living in neighborhoods with low overall opportunity showed a faster pace of aging with DunedinPACE (0.06 SD increase, 95% CI = 0.01, 0.12; p = .029). Similar effects occurred for the health and environment (0.05 SD increase, 95% CI = 0.01, 0.10; p = .023) and social and economic (0.07 SD increase, 95% CI = 0.01, 0.12; p = .026) domains of the overall opportunity score. GrimAge2 and PhenoAge showed similar associations, but those were attenuated after adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and health behaviors.

Conclusions:

Low neighborhood opportunity, particularly in health and environment and social and economic domains, is associated with accelerated biological aging. Health behaviors may contribute to these effects, and additional mechanisms need to be examined in future research.
