ABSTRACT

In the evolving landscape of family therapy education, the need for effective teaching techniques for family therapy theory and practice in the current landscape of epistemological diversity has intensified. This article examines the use of a four-corners active learning activity with first-year master’s students to help them critically analyze their personal and professional worldviews as they learn foundational family therapy theories. This activity aims to help students focus on process, identify their worldview, increase tolerance for uncertainty, and address the gap between espoused beliefs and reactions. By physically responding to epistemological prompts, students confront inconsistencies, fostering self-awareness, and flexibility. Observations suggest this approach promotes critical self-awareness and flexibility, which can support the development of their clinical theory. The article reflects on the effectiveness and limitations of this pedagogical strategy, suggesting its wider use in developing responsive and reflexive therapists in a changing sociocultural context.

ABSTRACT

Introduction

Engagement in mental health services among young patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) is crucial for preventing relapse. We conducted this scoping review to establish the proportion and determinants of engagement, disengagement and re-engagement in outpatient mental health care among young patients from 13 to 35 years with FEP.

Methods

We used the guidelines for scoping review by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) and the Arksey and O’Malley framework. We searched for published and unpublished studies guided by the inclusion criteria: studies published in English from 1990, the expansion of psychiatric outpatient, focused on engaged, disengaged and re-engaged in outpatient mental health care using quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods studies. We performed the numerical and thematic analysis and reporting using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Extension for scoping review (PRISMA-ScR).

Results

About 25 articles published from 2002 to 2020 met the inclusion criteria for this review; the proportion of young people with FEP who remained engaged was 45.5% for 6 months of follow-up, and the proportion of re-engagement after initial disengagement was 78.8%. Disengagement ranged between 13% and 56.3% for 12–36 months. The socio-demographic factors associated with disengagement were older age, male, black, unmarried status, living alone, unemployment, social and material deprivation, poverty, substance use and involvement with criminal justice. Some clinical determinants included a history of mental illness in the family and a psychosis disorder diagnosis other than schizophrenia.

Conclusion

Disengagement from mental health services is consistently high among people with FEP, indicating the need for intervention studies that address the associated individual and clinical factors to ensure their retention in treatment.

Abstract

Using phenomenology, narrative inquiry and autoethnographic approaches, this study analyses a program of faculty development conducted alongside the delivery of an international field school. Through this study, we explore the value and benefits of inter-cultural field programming and how these might serve to complement or to redress prevailing university practices in Indonesia. As we describe in the included narratives, Indonesia provides ideal opportunities to explore intercultural and international approaches to education as part of a set of unique and immersive field experiences. Using the complementary theoretical lenses of biocultural diversity and sustainability, our coursework and faculty development opportunities are delivered together in cooperation with local partners and involve short or extended visits to local communities, national parks, cultural events and volunteer work with community organizations. These experiences are centred in Sulawesi Utara, within easy transportation from Manado and our academic home: a small Indonesian university that serves as lead for the program. Our experiences demonstrate that the inclusion of local and community-based forms of knowledge can serve to broaden and enrich student learning while also increasing student engagement and cultural sensitivity.

Abstract

Few studies have investigated the longitudinal correlations among negative life events, a sense of security, and internet addiction (IA). The aim of the present study was to test these correlations in Chinese university freshmen. This study included a total of 912 university freshmen (384 men [42.11%]; mean age, 18.36 ± 0.82 years). Assessments were performed at four time points at 6-month intervals. Random intercept cross-lagged analysis revealed that negative life events at T1 positively predicted IA at T2, negative life events at T2 negatively predicted a sense of security and positively predicted IA at T3, a sense of security at T3 negatively predicted negative life events and IA at T4, IA at T2 negatively predicted a sense of security at T3, and IA at T3 positively predicted negative life events at T4. Importantly, a sense of security at T3 mediated the effect of negative life events at T2 on IA at T4 and the effect of IA at T2 on negative life events at T4. Additionally, the longitudinal correlations among negative life events, a sense of security, and IA were stronger in female students than in male students. Our findings suggest that the correlation between negative life events and IA is pathological compensation and that a sense of security is an internal compensation mechanism. This information may contribute to the development of psychological interventions for reducing IA in university freshmen.

ABSTRACT

Objective

Complementing existing economic and structural explanations of trends toward later and less marriage in Korea, this study focuses on the part played by gender-role attitudes in shaping never-married adults’ marriage desires, which, in turn, are likely to affect their marriage behavior.

Background

The persistent characteristic of marriage in Korea as a package requiring multiple family roles and obligations may conflict with the changing gender-role attitudes that have been facilitated by women’s educational expansion and labor force participation. This inconsistency may impact never-married adults’ desire to marry.

Method

We analyzed data from a recent online survey that asked unmarried Korean men and women aged 25–49 about their desires for marriage and attitudes toward gender roles. Using factor analysis and ordered logit regression, we examined the association between gender-role attitudes and marriage desires among never-married adults.

Results

Factor analysis identified two distinct dimensions underlying gender-role attitudes among never-married Korean adults: (1) attitudes toward the primacy of the breadwinner role for men and (2) attitudes toward the incongruency of work and family for women. We found that gender-role attitudes were significantly associated with marriage desires for women but not for men.

Conclusion

The stronger relevance of gender-role attitudes for women’s marriage desires is consistent with the salience of the marriage package for Korean women. We discuss the implications of our findings for the continued decline in marriage rates in Korea.
