An Evaluation of an Environmental Mediation Process in Scotland Based on Direct Observation

ABSTRACT

Environmental conflicts are increasing as is interest in ways they can be managed. However, evaluations of Environmental Conflict Resolution (ECR) processes based on direct observation remain scarce, despite ECR existing for over half a century. Furthermore, there are few evaluations of ECR processes that have been conducted outside of the United States, which limits understanding about the different contextual applications of ECR. These significant shortcomings hamper the generation of practical and knowledge-based learning, as well as theory building in ECR. To address this, we use a subset of criteria from the ECR literature pertaining to (1) outcomes, (2) process, and (3) relationships to assess data generated through direct observation of an environmental mediation process, alongside interviews and surveys of participants, focused on ameliorating conflict over upland deer management in Scotland. Our results indicate that mediation fostered positive relationships, was generally procedurally effective but achieved limited tangible outcomes. We then provide some longer-term reflections on the mediation process, discuss the strengths and limitations of our criteria, and note lessons from our experience conducting an evaluation of an ECR process. We conclude by calling for more evaluations of ECR processes based on direct observation to be conducted to build understanding of effective practice.

A global systematic scoping review of the mental health and well‐being impacts of youth participation and engagement

Nov 24th 2025, 03:36

Background

Amidst a rapid growth in youth participation initiatives globally, such as government-initiated advisory councils and youth-led activism groups, it is important to understand how being involved in youth participation roles can affect youth mental health and well-being. This global systematic scoping review comprehensively synthesises existing literature on the mental health and well-being outcomes associated with a broad range of youth participation activities; identifies key components of participation that lead to enhanced or diminished outcomes; and establishes knowledge gaps.

Methods

Eligibility criteria included peer-reviewed and grey literature resources (published between 1995–2023) reporting qualitative and/or quantitative data on the mental health and/or well-being (MHWB) outcomes associated with participation activities among youth 15–24 years. Articles were double screened by two independent reviewers. Participation type and components, study methodology, population characteristics and MHWB outcomes were extracted, and results were summarised narratively according to rigorous scoping review methodologies.

Results

Seventy-two resources were included in the review, comprising a total of 69,297 young people. Participating in civic engagement, volunteering, leadership and governance and youth advisory councils generally led to positive MHWB for young people, such as increased empowerment and reduced anxiety and depressive symptoms, whilst activism, political engagement and involvement in research settings conferred mixed outcomes. Key components of participation that impacted MHWB included clear and effective communication; observing programme impact; supportive environments; the structure, type and content of participation; and opportunities for skill building. The review highlights key knowledge gaps with respect to underrepresented subpopulations, geographic regions and study methodologies.

Conclusion

This systematic scoping review, coproduced with young people with lived experience of varied engagement initiatives, synthesises evidence to inform the future design and implementation of safe, supportive, inclusive and mentally healthy youth participation.

ABSTRACT

The current study reviewed the psychosocial effects of romantic breakups in emerging adulthood, particularly focused on evidence related to psychological health and psychosocial development, including aspects of identity and intimacy. A systematic literature search was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines across EBSCOhost, PubMed and Web of Science (ISI) databases. Studies with available evidence on psychosocial dimensions and emerging adult populations who had experienced a romantic breakup were included and subjected to review evaluation. Forty-seven studies were eligible for inclusion. Results showed several negative and positive psychosocial outcomes and supported the effect of breakups on changes in self-concept and interpersonal intimacy. Diverse factors influenced positive and negative adjustment. Specifically, individuals experiencing more challenges were especially those with insecure attachment, a history of childhood abuse and maladaptive coping strategies. Conversely, individuals employing adaptive coping mechanisms and personal resources such as emotional regulation and mentalization tended to exhibit better postbreakup outcomes. The long-term effects remain inconclusive, highlighting the need for further research. These findings underscore the complexity of breakup experiences and highlight the crucial role of supportive factors in shaping psychosocial adjustment. This first systematic review of the psychosocial effects of breakups suggested that interventions targeted at emerging adults should enhance psychosocial transformations and individuals’ specific needs to prevent maladjustment to breakups and psychological problems.

ABSTRACT

Objective

To analyze how shifts in population composition and variations in the behavior of different sociodemographic groups have changed abortion practices in Spain between 2011 and 2021.

Methods

We used data from the Voluntary Terminations of Pregnancies register and Spanish Population and Housing Censuses to examine abortion rates and demographic characteristics of women aged 12–52. We used Poisson regression models and the Oaxaca–Blinder decomposition technique to estimate the contributions of shifts in population structure and variations in behaviors to changes in abortion rates.

Results

We found that 40% of the decline was due to changes in sociodemographic characteristics. Specifically, the relative reduction in the number of younger women in the population and the increase in women’s education levels significantly contributed to the decline in abortion rates, while the influx of immigrant women offset some of this reduction. The reduction not explained by these factors was attributed to behavioral changes, with significant reductions in the likelihood of undertaking an abortion also occurring among women under 35, immigrants from non-high-income countries, and lower-educated women.

Conclusions

The study highlights the importance of including changes in the sociodemographic composition of populations in analyses of shifts in abortion rates. It also shows that behavioral changes are not uniform, and that the primary driver of change in abortion rates in Spain is the reduction in abortion rates among the subgroups that had the highest initial rates, leading to a gradual flattening of the differences between women of different ages, education levels, and migratory backgrounds.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 restrictions led to a shadow pandemic, disproportionately affecting women through increased violence. Lifestyle changes imposed by local governments to combat the pandemic exacerbated domestic violence, coining the term “Shadow Pandemic” by UN Women. This study explores the experiences of violence faced by married women in Kerala during the COVID-19 lockdown. A phenomenological approach was used to examine narratives from 35 women victims of domestic violence. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify significant themes. The findings reveal a spectrum of abuse, categorized into key themes: marital disharmony, constant surveillance, entrapment in fear, denial of freedom, challenges due to lockdown, and coping mechanisms. These themes highlight the profound distress and how women responded to the adversity. The lockdown-induced shadow pandemic has deeply affected women, illustrating the intersection of a global health crisis and a surge in gender-based violence. This study emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive societal action. Prioritizing the well-being and empowerment of women is critical to ensuring their inclusion in the recovery process post-pandemic.

Puberty blockers have been used in gender-affirming healthcare for decades.
They temporarily suppress the hormones that cause pubertal development, giving young people and their families time to make informed decisions without the pressure of irreversible bodily changes proceeding in a direction that may not fit who they are. They can also reduce the need for later interventions such as hair removal, voice therapy or chest surgery. If treatment stops, puberty resumes – a key reason they are considered an appropriate early intervention in international clinical guidelines.

Setting municipal relief administrations of the 1930s within a wider literature on welfare and urban poor relief, Strikwerda highlights the legacy on which relief policymakers relied in determining policy directions, as well as the experiences of the individuals and families who depended on relief for their survival. Focusing on three prairie cities—Edmonton, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg—Strikwerda argues that municipal officials used their power to set policy to address what they perceived to be the most serious threats to the social order stemming from the economic crisis. By analyzing the differing ways in which local relief programs treated married and single men, he also explores important gendered dynamics at work in the response of city administrators to the social and economic upheaval of the Depression.
