Abstract

Background and Aims

There is evidence to suggest that earlier initiation to alcohol increases the rate and severity of alcohol consumption. However, this often overlooks the fact that earlier initiation also means a longer drinking history. This paper estimated differences in patterns of alcohol use and harm across adolescence and early adulthood, allowing for the fact that the patterns over time may differ depending on the age at which initiation occurred.

Design

Prospective cohort study.

Setting

Australia.

Participants

The Australian Parental Supply of Alcohol Longitudinal Study (APSALS), a cohort of n = 1906 adolescents recruited in adolescence (mean age 12.9) from 107 Australian schools and followed up until adulthood (11 annual waves total, 2010–2021).

Measurements

We defined age of initiation as the age at which alcohol consumption was first reported in the study. Our outcomes were amount of alcohol consumed, monthly heavy episodic drinking, alcohol-related harm and self-reported symptoms of alcohol use disorder in the years following initiation.

Findings

Those who initiated at age 12 had a lower risk of consumption [risk ratio (RR) 0.01; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.01–0.02] in the year following initiation (age 13), compared with those who initiated at age 18. Similarly, those who initiated at age 15 had a lower risk of alcohol use disorder in the year after initiation (RR 0.66; 95% CI = 0.52–0.83), compared with those who initiated at age 18. However, at age 20, those who initiated at age 12 showed higher consumption (RR 1.57; 95% CI = 1.18–2.09), monthly heavy episodic drinking (RR 1.24; 95% CI = 1.02–1.51) and alcohol-related harms [incidence-rate ratio (IRR) 1.73; 95% CI = 1.21–2.46] than those who initiated at age 18. Similar results were seen for symptoms consistent with DSM-IV alcohol dependence (RR 1.20; 95% CI = 1.05–1.38), DSM-IV alcohol abuse (RR 1.54; 95% CI = 1.04–2.29) and DSM-5 alcohol use disorder (RR 1.36; 95% CI = 1.12–1.65). However, there was evidence of ageing out, with risk of heavy episodic drinking and alcohol-related harm peaking around age 20 and then declining, regardless of when initiation occurred.

Conclusions

Later initiation to alcohol appears to be associated with more rapid escalation in drinking and related harm, but lower ‘peak’ harm than earlier initiation. The findings support the current guidelines recommending adolescents avoid alcohol until adulthood, and reinforce the need for public health intervention targeting both children and parents.

ABSTRACT

This study examines the philanthropic motivations, giving behaviors, and cause preferences of women donors, with a focus on the impact of race and generation. Utilizing surveys and interviews, the research compares women who support women’s foundations and funds (WFFs) with those who do not. The findings indicate that women donors are motivated by a desire for meaningful impact, shaped by personal experiences, identities, and social networks. Notably, WFF supporters emphasize social change, whereas non-WFF donors often focus on immediate impact and core values. The findings challenge the assumption that women primarily fund small or grassroots initiatives, participate in collaborative giving, and prioritize causes supporting women and girls. The study highlights the necessity for nonprofits to adopt intersectional, mission-driven fundraising strategies to effectively engage women donors, emphasizing both relational and strategic motivations. It contributes to the discourse on gender, race, and philanthropy, providing practical implications for nonprofit development and donor engagement.

ABSTRACT

This article explores how value is generated in the Portuguese call centre sector by examining its reliance on the commodification of socially and historically rooted reproductive capacities. Previous research on call centres has often focused on the disembedding, disembodiment, depersonalisation, and desubjectification of human linguistic agency, frequently neglecting the familial, educational, and moral infrastructures that make labour power both viable and exploitable. Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork, I argue that the extraction of value in this sector relies not only on linguistic output or emotional labour but also on historically embedded reproductive capacities, such as empathy, ethical judgment, and communicative skills. These capacities are shaped by intergenerational efforts aimed at social mobility and national modernisation. These reproductive investments, which are developed outside the wage relationship, are appropriated by capital through a labour regime that requires personalisation while enforcing standardisation. By integrating social reproduction theory with call centre studies, this article reframes call centres as critical sites where the tensions between production and reproduction become evident, contested, and productive of surplus value.

Abstract

Child abuse is a pervasive form of gender-based violence that inflicts lasting trauma on its victims, their families, and their communities. Participation in the criminal legal system can exacerbate this trauma, particularly for children and youth experiencing intersecting and systemic inequalities. Trauma-informed practices have emerged as a framework for various systems to recognize the effects of trauma and adapt interactions to promote healing and reduce re-traumatization. This raises an overarching question of what the elements of a trauma-informed approach to child abuse in the criminal legal system are. This article synthesizes the state of the literature and current practices as they relate to trauma-informed approaches for children and youth victimized by child abuse who are engaged with the criminal legal system, focusing on the Canadian legal and policy context. We summarize the impact of legal system involvement for these children and youth and explore how trauma-informed approaches are conceptualized within the criminal legal system, including restorative and transformative justice approaches. We also identify core elements of trauma-informed approaches to the legal process in child abuse cases and the associated policy and practice implications for the criminal legal system. Lastly, we identify gaps in the literature and outline future directions and recommendations for research to expand knowledge and reduce system-induced trauma for these vulnerable young people.

Abstract

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a heterogeneous disorder, and approximately 70% of patients with OCD experience sensory phenomena (SP). Previous studies have revealed that patients with OCD exhibit a deficit in response inhibition (RI). However, few studies have investigated the relationship between SP and RI in patients with OCD. This study aimed to investigate differences in RI between non-comorbid, medication-free patients with OCD with and without SP. Thirty-seven patients with OCD with SP (OCD + SP), 27 without SP (OCD-noSP), and 50 controls (HCs) were compared in terms of RI using the stop-signal task. Both OCD groups had a deficit in RI compared with HCs, and no difference in RI was found between the OCD + SP and OCD-noSP groups. No correlation was observed between SP and stop-signal reaction time in the OCD + SP group. Our findings suggest that a deficit in RI is not related to SP in OCD.

ABSTRACT

Compassion—a focal actor’s behavioral response intended to alleviate sufferer distress—offers an antidote to the pervasive challenge of workplace distress. Previous research focused on uniformly favorable, self-relevant inferences observers make about organizations that enable compassion. We examine differential, other-relevant inferences observers make about compassionate focal actors, specifically their leadership emergence. Drawing on Expectancy Violation Theory and the Integrated Framework for Leadership Emergence, we argue that observer inferences of compassionate focal actors differ depending on who displays compassion, what type of compassion is displayed, and where it is displayed. We expect observers to make differential leadership emergence (LE) inferences of compassionate focal actors, arguing that compassion represents a positive unexpected behavior only for men, garnering observers’ attention and resulting in men’s LE via increased perceptions of warmth and competence. Distinguishing between two forms of compassion, we argue that communal compassion replicates this gender effect, whereas agentic compassion offsets it as a positive unexpected behavior for women. We further suggest that work context attenuates gender and compassion type effects, with uniformly positive LE inferences only in feminine work contexts. We largely support our predictions in a multi-wave field study and two experimental vignettes and discuss our contributions to compassion and LE research.
