ABSTRACT

Nonsuicidal self-injury is a common mental health concern, and humanistic counseling approaches can support clients in the change process. The benefits of experiential approaches grounded within humanistic theories of change include an emphasis on the present moment, client empowerment, and skill development that can be practiced in real time and applied outside of session. Experiential activities for those who self-injure are provided along with a description of their application. Practice considerations, limitations, and areas for future research are presented.

Abstract

More data does not necessarily mean more information: this is the big data paradox, and it should be more widely disseminated as the essential point is that caution should be exercised regarding inferences made in areas where large amounts of data are routinely used, such as data mining and artificial intelligence. In this article, the assumptions underpinning methods of statistical inference are considered, and whilst departures from these assumptions may have little effect when the amount of data (sample size) is relatively small, there can be substantial cumulative effects from increasing sample size. Consideration is also given to assessing any practical significance from the effect size relative to variation in the population to which any inferences might apply. Emphasizing assumptions and exploring their effects could (should?) be incorporated as adjunct material in lectures/classes on statistical inference.

ABSTRACT

Background

Compared to men, women are less likely to sexual offend. Previous reviews found low rates of sexual recidivism among women. The last published meta-analysis was based on studies from before 2010.

Aims

Conduct an updated meta-analysis of the sexual recidivism rates of women returned to the community. We expected the rates to be low and to decline the longer they remained sexual offence free in the community.

Methods

Fourteen studies met selection criteria. Their publication/presentation dates ranged from 1998 to 2023. Results were presented as raw proportions as well as meta-analytic averages.

Results

Of the 4208 women, 3.1% (131) were known to have sexually reoffended. The rate was 2.4% during the first 5 years (64/2642, k = 8) and 1.1% between years 5 and 10 (6/535, k = 2). There was large and significant variability across studies (prediction intervals: < 0.001%–11%). The rates of violent recidivism (7.8%) and general (any) recidivism (30.1%) were substantially higher than the rate of sexual recidivism.

Conclusions

This review confirms previous findings that the sexual recidivism rate of women is very low. Their risk is so low that it is unlikely to be reduced by sexual crime specific treatment or public protection measures (e.g., registration and notification). Instead, gender-responsive interventions should focus on the women’s risk for general criminal recidivism and strive to promote successful reintegration.

ABSTRACT

Background

Loneliness in old age is linked to various negative outcomes, including poor subjective health, depression and cognitive decline, including dementia onset, and its prevention is crucial. This study examines the communication factors associated with loneliness by focusing on the relationship between communication partners, communication methods, and the qualitative and quantitative aspects of communication among middle-aged and older adults.

Methods

An online survey of 560 participants (376 men, 184 women; mean age = 68.4 ± 10.7 years) was conducted in November 2022. It assessed the frequency of, and satisfaction with communication across various relationships, including spouses, friends and family members. Loneliness served as the dependent variable, whereas social support and social networks were included as covariates.

Results

Multiple regression analysis revealed that satisfaction with communication with a son or daughter (β = −0.10, p = 0.009), son- or daughter-in-law (β = −0.11, p = 0.030), friends (β = −0.18, p < 0.001), parents (β = −0.13, p = 0.037) and other relationships (β = −0.23, p = 0.001) was associated with loneliness.

Conclusions

The findings highlight the importance of qualitative aspects of communication, particularly satisfaction within relationships, in mitigating loneliness among older populations.

Abstract

Assessments of age trajectories are crucial for various strands of sociological research. This study provides guidance on how to estimate age trajectories by discussing a research design to answer the question, ‘How does aging affect subjective well-being?’ We define the estimand, discuss key identification and estimation assumptions, and propose—informed by this discussion—a research design. By contrasting our design with those of previous studies, we conclude that many prior investigations were affected by three biases related to identification and one bias concerning estimation. Using extensive panel data from the German Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP), we demonstrate that these four biases contributed to mixed empirical evidence, producing distortions that led to even qualitatively different conclusions. Finally, we discuss implications of our study for life course research and for enhancing the credibility of social science more broadly.

ABSTRACT

Background

The issue of where to provide end-of-life care is an important concern for family members caring for older adults. Although many older adults would prefer to die at home, the preferences of family members and the psychosocial factors influencing these preferences are not well understood. This study investigated the preferences of family caregivers for end-of-life care at home and examined the relationships between these preferences, death attitudes, and the disabilities of older adults.

Methods

We conducted a web-based screening survey of 6000 older persons, of which 339 respondents answered that they currently care for a family member who needs care at home due to dementia or ageing. Of these 339 respondents, data from 246 persons were analysed, excluding those who answered that they had no problems regarding the cognitive function and daily life functioning of the person requiring care.

Results

Multiple regression analysis revealed that in addition to the care recipients’ activities of daily living (ADL), behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) had affected family caregivers’ preference for end-of-life care. Furthermore, among the psychosocial factors of family caregivers, attitudes towards death and memorial service awareness influenced family caregivers’ preference for end-of-life care. Cluster analysis and ANOVA showed that the preference for caregiving at the end of life was significantly lower in a cluster where BPSD were present in older adults, even though their ADL was not declining.

Conclusions

This study showed that BPSD is an important consideration for families considering home-based end-of-life care. Additionally, memorial service awareness is a death attitude that influences preferences for end-of-life care. Traditional ancestor worship behaviours also affect the actions of families when older adults reach the end of their lives.

ABSTRACT

Objectives

This study aimed to investigate the age-dependent association between new cognitive classification and chronic diseases among middle-aged and older adults using Poisson regression analysis.

Methods

We included 6940 people from the 2018 Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging. Cognitive status was classified as normal, moderate, and severe based on the participants’ Korean Mini-Mental State Examination scores and instrumental activities of daily living. Poisson regression analysis was performed to predict the number of chronic diseases in middle-aged and older adults with grade three cognitive status. The number of predicted events at each cognitive level was calculated according to age.

Results

In the normal cognitive group, most of the participants were females 2515 (54.03), and the average age was 66.50 (SD = 8.62). Compared to the normal cognitive group (n = 4665), the incidence of chronic disease in the moderate cognitive impairment group (n = 1316) was 0.07 times that of the normal group, whereas, in the severe cognitive impairment group (n = 420), it was 0.21 times that of the normal group.

Conclusions

Higher levels of cognitive impairment and older age were associated with a higher probability of having multiple chronic conditions. The study findings highlight the importance of integrative care with cognitive function and age in managing multiple chronic conditions.

ABSTRACT

This article draws on digital ethnographic fieldwork to examine how the pandemic-induced shift to remote work prompted workers at a London tech start-up to engage in ethical reflections on their new work–life arrangements. Workers imagined becoming a more “balanced” worker—autonomous but connected, productive but not burnt out, balanced but still committed—capable of investing their time and energy into both their professional and personal lives. Yet as time passed, aspirations to cultivate a balanced self clashed with emerging ambiguities about what counts as “real work” and “procrastination” when working from home. As everyday rhythms were reconfigured, the absence of office-based social cues revealed the collective, relational maintenance work that underpins temporal order, workplace presence, and a sense of balance for workers. By tracing workers’ struggles and efforts to cultivate balance, this article contributes to debates on the social dynamics and moral contradictions of remote work in a post-pandemic context.

Abstract

Dreams have been used in psychotherapy since the early days of psychoanalysis, and the effectiveness of therapeutic work with dreams is now well documented. However, there is still no empirically based model for contemporary therapeutic dream work that integrates the findings of empirical and clinical dream research. Structural Dream Analysis (SDA) developed for this purpose is summarized with its research methodology and the results to date. The central assumption is that the agency of the dream ego (the figure in the dream that the dreamer experiences as the ego) to cope with and solve problems in the dream—as opposed to feeling threatened, being anxious and passive and having no solution—can be equated with ego strength in the psychodynamic sense, and that the improvement in the course of therapy is reflected in an increase in dream ego agency. A typology of six dream patterns has been developed that can be used to identify over 90% of dreams in clinical practice. The dream patterns are related to the patient’s specific problems, the themes of psychotherapy and progress in therapy in terms of improvement. The model has been confirmed in a number of empirical studies. The results support Jung’s theory of the dream as a self-representation of the psyche and his concept of interpretation at the subjective level.
