Background

There is limited insight about the reach of alcohol marketing among adults in the United Kingdom (UK). We therefore examined awareness across a range of marketing activities and sources and how this differed by degree of alcohol use.

Method

An online cross-sectional survey with a nonprobability adult sample (18+) in the UK (n = 6021). Participants self-reported past-month awareness of alcohol marketing and special price deals from companies/brands, off-trade shops (e.g. supermarkets), online retailers, and on-trade venues (e.g. pubs/bars). Alcohol use was assessed using the AUDIT-C (coded: nondrinkers, lower-risk drinkers, higher-risk drinkers, not stated).

Results

For alcohol companies/brands, 65.9% had seen advertising (e.g. on TV) and 79.5% had seen wider marketing (e.g. sponsorship). For off-trade shops, 86.8% had seen marketing (e.g. product displays) and 76.6% had seen special price deals (e.g. multi-buy discounts). For online retailers, 30.8% had seen marketing (e.g. leaflets/flyers) and 52.4% had seen special price offers. For on-trade venues, 69.0% had seen marketing (e.g. posters/leaflets/flyers) and 52.1% had seen special price offers. The odds of reporting awareness were generally lower among nondrinkers and higher among higher-risk drinkers (vs. lower-risk).

Conclusion

Adults see alcohol marketing through various activities and sources, with awareness generally increasing with degree of alcohol use.

Objective: This scoping review was to synthesize the rapidly accelerating literature on Indigenous peoples and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and to identify barriers to implementation and sustainability. The article also addressed outcomes, perspectives, and suggestions for implementing culturally adapted MOUD programs. Method: We conducted a scoping review of articles indexed in MEDLINE, APA PsycInfo, Scopus, and ERIC (through September 2024). Articles needed to include substantive information on an Indigenous population (in Canada, the United States, New Zealand, or Australia), include content on MOUD, and address the intersection of MOUD and Indigenous populations. Titles/abstracts were screened by two reviewers, followed by a full-text review and data extraction. Results: Forty articles met inclusion criteria, organized under two primary categories: medication type (n = 18) and nonmedication specific (n = 22). Overall, Indigenous clients have a mixed degree of engagement, retention, and positive outcomes within methadone, buprenorphine, and injectable opioid agonist treatment programs. Promising findings emerged for MOUD programs targeting Indigenous youth and that incorporate comprehensive cultural and health frameworks. Across MOUD types, Indigenous clients had consistently lower rates of treatment access and retention than did non-Indigenous clients. Conclusions: The findings emphasize the importance of aligning MOUD programs with Indigenous cultural frameworks and involving Indigenous consultation at all stages. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

Faces are generally assumed to be processed holistically, that is, features are represented in an integrated fashion. Similarly, pictorial representations of faces (e.g., drawings) have been shown to elicit holistic processing. Some researchers, however, have contested the concept of holistic face processing, suggesting that the perception of a face is no more than the sum of individual face parts. In the present study, we ask whether faces in paintings are processed holistically and, if so, whether this holistic processing is consistent across art styles along the realism–distortion dimension. Additionally, we seek to understand whether other factors, such as interest in art and exposure to art (e.g., visiting museums), as well as general visual recognition abilities, contribute to the potential holistic processing of faces in paintings. We found holistic face processing across stimulus sets, suggesting that holistic processing of faces in art occurs regardless of the characteristics of the art style (i.e., realism/distortion).Moreover, general interest in art showed a marginally negative correlation with holistic face processing. In contrast, general visual recognition abilities correlated positively with holistic processing, suggesting that increased capacity to process purely visual information benefits perceptual integration and grouping. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

Aesthetics shape and color almost every aspect of our daily lives, from the products we interact with and the clothes we wear to the design of our homes and cities. However, many people associate aesthetics with art, and an historical academic interest in the factors that shape the experience of engaging with art has yielded rich insights into our understanding of the value and ubiquity of empirical aesthetics. While most existing research has focused on music and the visual arts, there is a growing interest in the aesthetics of human movement among empirical aesthetics researchers. In the present study, we sought to examine how individual differences in global empathy and previous movement experience influence aesthetic evaluations of dance sequences. Observers (N = 55) completed a self-report measure of global empathy (Toronto Empathy Questionnaire), provided an assessment of their prior dance experience (via the Goldsmith’s Dance Sophistication Index) and rated a series of whole-body point-light display movements (imbued with happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and nonexpressive neutrality) from the McNorm Library (Smith & Cross, 2023) in terms of beauty and liking on 100-point slider scales. Participants demonstrated a general preference for emotionally expressive movement sequences, while specific types of emotional expressivity influenced liking, but not beauty, judgments. Additionally, differences in both prior dance experience and levels of global empathy influenced aesthetic evaluations of the McNorm Library dance clips. We consider the implications of these results for empirical aesthetics and social perception research and discuss how empirical aesthetics research in this area may be of interest, or use, to dance practitioners. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

Historically, scientific studies have searched for a “cause” of transgender identity, focusing on prenatal androgen exposure. Participants are usually recruited from gender clinics and correlations are sought between biomarkers and gender identity, often with inconsistent results. We evaluated this approach by examining the utility of two commonly used biomarkers, digit ratio and mental rotation tasks, using community-based recruitment that included both transgender and nonbinary identities, unlike previous research. Participants (N = 1,200) were asked to describe their identities using both self-labeling and gender and sexual orientation scales, took a mental rotation test, and had their hands scanned for digit ratio measurement. We found that digit ratio and mental rotation scores were consistent with sex assigned at birth rather than gender identity, using both categorical gender groupings and continuous gender scales. We also found no evidence supporting the historical typology of “homosexual” and “nonhomosexual” groupings of transgender individuals. In addition, we found that 32% of transgender women (n = 168) and 45% of transgender men (n = 175) experienced changes in their sexual orientation with gender transition and, at least for transgender women, there was an increased chance of a change in sexuality among those using hormones. Finally, our data suggest an interaction of race/ethnicity with how sexuality is experienced and/or reported by transgender women. These results highlight the importance of taking an inclusive, community-based approach and call for an examination of underlying assumptions and measures used to explore the development of gender identity and sexual orientation. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)
