<p><p>
<st>Background</st>
</p>
<p>Bullying involvement (victim or perpetrator role) in childhood is linked to later suicidality. However, findings are inconsistent, and sex may be a moderator. We investigated whether childhood bullying involvement was associated with suicidality in adolescence, and whether this association varied by sex.</p>
<p>
<st>Methods</st>
</p>
<p>Childhood bullying involvement was collected from self-reports of children and parents during the 11-year follow-up of the Danish National Birth Cohorts (DNBC). Data on suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SA) from the 18-year follow-up were supplemented with hospital records of SA from the National Patient Register. Associations were estimated using multinomial logistic regressions, while inverse probability weighting accounted for socioeconomic-related selection bias.</p>
<p>
<st>Results</st>
</p>
<p>11 705 boys and 17 292 girls were included. Adolescent boys exposed to bullying had increased risks of SI (adjusted relative risk ratio (aRRR): 1.6; 95% CI: 1.4 to 1.8) and SA (aRRR: 2.8; 95% CI: 2.0 to 3.8), while no increased risk was found among those who were perpetrators of bullying vs non-involved peers. Girl victims had increased risks (aRRR) of SI and SA of 1.6 (95% CI: 1.5 to 1.7) and 2.9 (95% CI: 2.5 to 3.5), respectively. Girl perpetrators had an increased risk of SA (aRRR: 2.3; 95% CI: 1.5 to 3.6). Sex significantly moderated the association between perpetration role and suicidality.</p>
<p>
<st>Conclusion</st>
</p>
<p>Childhood bullying was associated with a higher risk of suicidality during adolescence. Girl, but not boy, perpetrators had increased risk of SI and SA. These findings emphasise the importance of preventive interventions targeting bullying in childhood and its long-term effects, including possible differences in policies for boys and girls.</p>

<div class="boxTitle">Abstract</div>
<p>Hospitals, as an important component of the health system, consume a substantial amount of health resources and are instrumental in improving population health. While many health financing interventions have been implemented at hospitals, evidence exploring common factors facilitating their implementation in low- and lower-middle-income countries (LLMICs) remains limited. We conducted a scoping review of existing hospital financing interventions in LLMICs. A combination of search strategies and key informant consultations were used to search for relevant literature. A total of 35 articles spanning six categories of hospital financing interventions were included in the review. The review centered on design and implementation factors associated with hospital financing interventions. Factors affecting a hospital financing intervention’s results were numerous and context specific. From the design and implementation perspective, five interconnected factors– governance and accountability, participatory process, proper intervention design, adequate resources and capacity, and monitoring and evaluation – underline the most influential factors across the six categories of hospital financing interventions. Understanding the connections among these factors and making efforts to align them with the country’s context make for a more promising intervention. The evidence on specifics across different types of hospital financing implementations remains limited, requiring more implementation studies guided by comprehensive theoretical frameworks to generate more concrete evidence.</p>

<div class="boxTitle">Abstract</div>
<div class="boxTitle">Background</div>
<p>Urbanization influences healthcare access and utilization, contributing to health disparities. This study aims to assess the effect of degree of urbanization on healthcare utilization in Portugal, where urbanization levels are above global average.</p>
<div class="boxTitle">Methods</div>
<p>Utilizing data from the 2019 National Health Survey, this cross-sectional study analyzed the association between degree of urbanization and outcomes including general and specialist consultations, flu vaccination, colonoscopy, and wait times. Adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) were estimated using Poisson regression models.</p>
<div class="boxTitle">Results</div>
<p>Less populated areas had increased wait times (aPR = 1.54; 95% confidence intervals [95% CI]: 1.06–2.24) and lower colonoscopy utilization (aPR = 0.86; 95% CI: 0.78–0.95). Flu vaccination rates were higher in rural (aPR = 1.15; 95% CI: 1.03–1.30) and suburban areas (aPR = 1.16; 95% CI: 1.04–1.30). No significant association was found for general/specialist consultations or excessive wait times.</p>
<div class="boxTitle">Conclusions</div>
<p>Geographic constraints limit healthcare access in less populated areas. Urban areas showed suboptimal flu vaccination rates, suggesting a need for improved immunization strategies. Addressing geographical disparities is crucial for ensuring equitable healthcare access across Portugal.</p>

<p>The concept of ‘social distancing’ was initially introduced as a public health measure to emphasize the importance of reducing physical proximity to limit viral transmission. It was credited to have saved numerous lives during the pandemic of 1918, which resulted in an estimated 50 million deaths globally. The lesson of history makes it quite clear that pandemics are a recurring threat. This article aims to critically assess a key component of the response to COVID-19, and offer recommendations that can mitigate the impact of future global biological and mental health crises.</p>

<div class="boxTitle">Abstract</div>
<p>The increasing reliance on non-probability samples, including administrative data, big data, and surveys with selective non-response, has brought the issue of selection bias to the forefront of applied research and official statistics production. This study investigates selection bias in the context of flash estimates, focusing on their application in short-term economic indicators such as the Gross Domestic Product and the Consumer Price Index. Leveraging prominent theoretical frameworks for modeling selection bias, we develop and evaluate a series of estimators that incorporate information from a fully-observed lagged target variable, current auxiliary variables, or combined data sources. Through simulations and a case study using turnover (i.e., revenue) data from Statistics Netherlands, we assess these estimators across diverse scenarios, including variations in variable distribution, selectivity levels, and correlations between auxiliary and target variables. Results indicate that estimators combining lagged and current auxiliary information provide more consistent results than those relying on a single data source. Additionally, estimators based on combined data sources perform relatively well under high selectivity and non-normal target distributions. These findings provide practical and easily implementable tools to address selection bias in non-probability samples, enhancing the reliability and timeliness of official statistics.</p>

<p><p>To the Editor The article by Del Casale et al in JAMA Psychiatry compared esketamine plus selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) vs esketamine plus serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) on 4 outcomes: all-cause mortality, hospitalization, suicide attempt, and relapse in depression. We are concerned that 3 outcomes are not reliably captured in the dataset used, rendering the entire report of uncertain validity. As a general rule, claims are often unreliable if not directly tied to reimbursement.</p>

<p><p>Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology, Vol 33(4), Aug 2025, 323-329; doi:10.1037/pha0000778</p>
<p>Despite robust evidence, there is a low uptake of incentive-based contingency management (CM) for substance use treatment due to provider worries about client perceptions of CM and high implementation costs. Research has attempted to address these concerns to facilitate the dissemination of CM for adult substance use. However, little research has explored these barriers to disseminating CM for adolescents. The present study assessed the degree to which parents (those most likely to be payors of adolescent treatment) held positive and negative views of incentives for substance use treatment, preferred fixed- versus variable-ratio schedules of reinforcement and immediate versus delayed receipt of reinforcers, and were willing to pay for incentive-based treatment. One hundred twenty-three parents of adolescents currently using substances (<em>N</em> = 123) were recruited via Facebook to participate in a survey study. While results show parents endorsed some objections, parents overwhelmingly endorsed positive views about incentives for adolescent substance use treatment and indicated a willingness to pay out-of-pocket costs. Also, parents endorsed incentives with fixed amounts over variable amounts. Finally, parent age was significantly associated with the likelihood of accepting incentives, and perception of incentives was significantly associated with the likelihood of agreeing to engage and willingness to pay for incentive-based treatment. This study showed parents largely accept the idea of incentives for substance use treatment and support exploring a self-pay model to increase the dissemination of CM. Research is needed to examine perceptions of incentives for substance use treatment among adolescents themselves and explore novel ways of integrating voucher- and prize-based procedures.
