Reasoning and arguing well lies at the core of thinking and constructing knowledge about complex, controversial issues. Leveraging the techniques of learning by teaching and deliberate erring, the present study developed and tested a novel intervention—learning by misteaching—to boost argumentative reasoning. University students (N = 208) were trained on argumentation strategies and studied a dual-position argumentative text on a controversial topic using one of three learning methods: notetaking, correct teaching, or misteaching. The notetaking group prepared to be tested and wrote study notes while generating good arguments about the topic, whereas both teaching groups prepared to teach and wrote a verbatim teaching script about the topic exactly as how they would orate a lecture while generating good arguments (correct teaching) or deliberately weak arguments (misteaching) for their intended audience to spot. All students were then tested on their basic recall of the text and higher order argumentative reasoning in integrating opposing views to form conclusions about the topic (e.g., weighing arguments and counterarguments, developing new alternative solutions or compromises). On both tests, students who had taught outperformed their peers who had written study notes. Importantly, misteaching produced additional gains for argumentative reasoning over correct teaching, even after controlling for recall performance. Yet, students’ metacognitive judgments revealed that they were largely unaware of these benefits even after the tests. Overall, these findings demonstrate how learning by teaching and deliberate erring can be strategically combined to improve higher order outcomes such as argumentative reasoning, while highlighting the counterintuitive benefits of intentionally making errors in low-stakes contexts.

Journal of Applied Psychology, Vol 110(10), Oct 2025, 1297-1317; doi:10.1037/apl0001283

Common method variance (CMV) substantially impacts how scholars conduct and review research. Several procedural and statistical remedies have been proposed to address the potential biasing effects that can result from CMV in data procured from a single source on a single occasion. Among them, temporal separation and distinct source designs have been the most popular. Psychological separation (PS) has also been proposed as a way to address CMV, by diverting respondents’ attention from previously accessed memories, disrupting response consistency patterns, and improving effortful responding. The present research attempted to create efficacious PS through a cognitive interference task administered midway through a survey, thereby attenuating correlations that could be affected by CMV to varying degrees. In an initial study and a constructive replication, our results show that a PS intervention of at least 7.5-min attenuated several relationships to levels significantly lower than those in a single source on a single occasion design, but to an extent consistent with the attenuation achieved by temporal separation or distinct source designs. These findings suggest that under appropriate circumstances, PS is an effective strategy to address certain forms of CMV. We conclude by providing a decision guide for responsibly choosing a research design in light of various theoretical, methodological, and logistical considerations, as well as offering several additional PS task examples that can be deployed in future studies.
While earlier studies on the experiences of transgender students in college suggest that those majoring in the arts, humanities, and social sciences have more positive college experiences than those in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields (Garvey et al., 2019; Maloy et al., 2022; Nichols, 2013; Renn, 2020; Taylor et al., 2020), the specific experiences and needs of transgender students majoring in artistic disciplines are largely unexplored. In this qualitative exploratory study, six participants were interviewed about their experiences as transgender students studying music, art, or theater at four different postsecondary institutions. Data analysis via thematic coding drew upon Z. Nicolazzo’s (2017) framework of resilience-as-practice, revealing two major themes across participants’ experiences as transgender college students in the arts: (a) barriers, including exclusionary social norms and oppressive performance standards, and (b) resiliency, through academic relationships, performance, and activism. The findings of this study complicate the enduring perception that arts spaces are consistently inclusive and supportive of transgender identities and expressions. The study concludes by providing novel recommendations based on these findings to help faculty, staff, and administrators in artistic fields to better support their transgender students’ success.

These mobilisations have emerged largely outside of Indonesia’s acknowledged reformasi social movements that, since the mid 2000s, are often organised in NGOs with access to funding and recognition by the government as “legitimate” representatives of civil society. Many of the new street protests have a distinct class character, involving students and gig economy workers from poor backgrounds, as well as workers and farmers, many with previous experiences in conflict with state and private companies.

My soon-to-be-published new research finds generative AI also carries a colonial bias. When prompted to visualise Aotearoa New Zealand’s past, Sora privileges the European settler viewpoint: pre-colonial landscapes are rendered as empty wilderness, Captain Cook appears as a calm civiliser, and Māori are cast as timeless, peripheral figures. As generative AI tools become increasingly influential in how we communicate, such depictions matter. They naturalise myths of benevolent colonisation and undermine Māori claims to political sovereignty, redress and cultural revitalisation.

ABSTRACT

This paper discusses the author’s experience as a bilingual and bicultural therapist practising in a second language within Australia’s multicultural society. Through the autoethnographic method, the author analyses how her cultural background and linguistic diversity have shaped her perceptions, interpretations and interactions with others, influencing her evolving professional identity. Despite the increasing interest in diverse populations and multicultural strategies, research on the intrapersonal challenges and effectiveness of bilingual and bicultural practising remains limited. Striving to shape our identities to fit a diverse society, we often encounter numerous internal contradictions, leading to stress and misunderstandings. Total acceptance of the situation with all its inconsistencies and polarities; honouring one’s roots, core values, experience and achievements; and appreciating the differences in others can significantly transform any circumstance. Exploring how integrative therapists navigate both spoken languages and the distinct ‘languages’ of various therapeutic approaches could provide valuable insights into working effectively across cultural and theoretical boundaries.
