<p>Objectives: Racial microaggressions at predominantly White institutions (PWIs) are a major concern for Black undergraduates because these experiences evoke feelings of “otherness” and may contribute to growing impostor phenomenon beliefs (IP)—feelings of intellectual fraudulence where people question their academic abilities. School belonging (i.e., a sense of connection to one’s academic institution) may be an important mediating factor that explains how racial microaggressions contribute to greater IP over time. Furthermore, these effects may be distinct for Black men and women, given their unique experiences at PWIs. Method: The current longitudinal study utilizes moderated-mediation analyses to examine these effects among 269 Black undergraduates (<em>M</em><sub>age</sub> = 19.71, <em>SD</em> = 2.36, 72% female) over a full academic year at a PWI. Results: Findings indicate that racial microaggressions indirectly predicted increased IP over a 1-year period through a negative association with schools belonging to Black men but not for Black women. Conclusions: These findings highlight the importance of gender and school belonging when examining how racial stressors contribute to changes in IP beliefs. Implications for theory and policy recommendations for educators and stakeholders are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)</p>

<p>Objectives: Crowding refers to the phenomenon whereby small visual objects above the acuity threshold are detected but unrecognizable when surrounded by nearby stimuli. It affects reading in healthy individuals and can be enhanced in reading impairments. By increasing the interletter space, crowding decreases. Previous evidence on patients with unilateral spatial neglect (USN) and peripheral dyslexia has shown a dissociation in sensitivity to spacing manipulation between those who mainly produced omissions and those characterized by substitutions in reading. Here, we wanted to verify the hypothesis that the reading impairment mainly characterized by substitutions is dissociated from USN, unlike the one characterized by omissions. Method: In a retrospective study, we collected 38 right-brain-damaged patients, 21 with USN. We analyzed the number and types of errors in reading single words and pseudowords, spaced and unspaced, comparing patients with and without USN. Results: USN patients showed significantly more omissions than patients without USN and increased omissions with letter spacing. Substitutions were more frequent in USN patients but did not increase with spacing. Performance of patients mainly characterized by substitutions revealed a reduction of errors with spaced pseudowords and a double dissociation from USN. Lesion overlap analysis suggested that the two deficits could depend on different components of visuospatial attention networks. Conclusions: We claim that proper neglect dyslexia is characterized by omission errors and has USN as a necessary mechanism, even if not sufficient. Conversely, acquired crowding dyslexia is a different reading deficit, characterized by substitutions due to an enhanced crowding phenomenon, independent of USN. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)</p>

<p>A number of studies have been conducted to assess the efficacy of exercise-based interventions for substance-use disorders. Nicotine use has been overrepresented in prior meta-analytic and systematic reviews, potentially obscuring the effects of exercise on outcomes related to other drugs. The aim of this meta-analysis and systematic review was to offer an updated account of the impact of exercise on substance-use outcomes for drugs other than nicotine. Eligible studies included peer reviewed articles published before August 2023 describing randomized controlled trials or clinical trials involving adults in which exercise served as the primary treatment intervention and substance use and/or craving outcomes were assessed for drugs other than nicotine. In addition to omnibus effects, meta-regression models were conducted to assess study design (within vs. between), data collection (acute vs. long-term), and outcome measure (drug craving vs. drug use) as potential moderating variables. A total of 19 articles describing 17 unique studies were selected for analysis, including data from 1,363 individual participants. An omnibus robust variance estimation meta-analysis indicated a significant reduction in substance-use outcomes following exercise intervention. The moderator analysis additionally indicated a significant effect of design type such that between-subject designs displayed smaller magnitude reductions than within-subject designs. Other potential moderators were not significant. These findings indicate that a variety of exercise-based interventions produce moderate improvements in substance use and craving for people using nonmedical drugs and corroborate prior reports that exercise is effective as an adjunctive or standalone treatment for substance-use disorder. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)</p>

<p>We assessed heart rate variability (HRV) as a measure of autonomic nervous system function during an ongoing double blind, placebo-controlled, trial of adjunct gabapentin during a buprenorphine-assisted taper and transition to injection naltrexone to explore how adjunctive pharmacotherapy and time influence autonomic nervous system activity and whether HRV metrics are predictive of treatment outcomes. Individuals with opioid use disorder who began their participation in an ongoing trial of adjunct gabapentin during an outpatient 10-day buprenorphine-assisted transition to injection naltrexone underwent experimental sessions at Weeks 1, 2, and 3 of the parent trial. HRV metrics were assessed for 2 min each while standing, sitting, and sitting while performing paced breathing (PB) using the ProComp2 System with sensor belt and analysis suite. Multiple imputation was used to analyze the HRV metrics due to some participants lacking data at all three weekly timepoints. Among 28 participants, logistic regression analyses indicated significant effects for frequency distributions and heart rate during PB exercises. Trends in frequency distribution during PB suggested potential influences of gabapentin on autonomic balance, resulting in lower HRV. Predictor variables for outcomes indicated a significant effect with higher low frequency/high frequency ratio during PB decreasing the odds of completing supervised withdrawal. Higher respiration rate and low frequency values while sitting showed trends and significant effects, respectively, for decreasing the odds of receiving Week 4 injection naltrexone. Selected HRV metrics change during supervised opioid withdrawal and are associated with treatment outcomes during supervised opioid withdrawal procedures. The significance of HRV metrics during PB exercises underscores the impact of specific activities on autonomic function, highlighting the importance of considering such effects when recording HRV metrics. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)</p>

<p>Objective: Cancer survivors experience reduced overall health-related quality of life (HRQoL) compared to the general population. This research assesses and compares the efficacy of an emotion-focused (CanCopeMind [CM]) and lifestyle (CanCopeLifestyle [CL]) intervention to improve HRQoL among cancer survivors. Method: This 8-week, internet-delivered, randomized controlled trial compared CM (<em>n</em> = 110) and CL (<em>n</em> = 114) on self-reported HRQoL (range −0.022 = indicating a state akin to <em>dead</em> to 1.0 representing<em> perfect health</em>) at baseline, postintervention, and 3-month follow-up. CM, adapted from the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders, targeted core emotion regulation skills (understanding emotions, mindfulness, flexible thinking, and changing behaviors). CL, the active control, targeted healthy lifestyle domains (diet, exercise, relaxation, and sleep). Results: HRQoL increased in both groups from baseline to postintervention (CM, <em>p</em>median = 0.54; CL, <em>p</em>median = 0.40), and these improvements were sustained at follow-up (CM, <em>p</em>median = 0.52; CL, <em>p</em> = .005, SMD<sub>median</sub> = 0.33). The difference between each group was not significant at either postintervention (<em>p</em> = .095, SMD<sub>median</sub> = 0.19) or follow-up (<em>p</em> = .081, SMDmedian = 0.23). Subgroup analyses revealed no moderation by cancer stage, treatment type, months since treatment, cancer type or sex. Conclusion: The findings indicate that an accessible, internet-delivered emotion-focused and lifestyle interventions hold promise for improving HRQoL among cancer survivors. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)</p>

<p>Objectives: Historically, hip-hop has highlighted racial injustices experienced by Black people in a White supremacist power structure, as well as promote Black empowerment and activism. Across two experiments, we examined the influence of listening to hip-hop on Black Americans’ collective action intentions. We also explored whether the effect of listening to conscious hip-hop on collective action intentions was mediated by group-based anger and/or collective efficacy using the dual-pathway model of collection action (Experiment 2). Method: In Experiment 1, Black Americans (<em>n</em> = 122) between the ages of 18– and 34 (<em>M</em><sub>age</sub> = 27.71) were randomly assigned to listen to conscious rap, nonconscious rap, or no music, and afterward they completed a collective action intention measure. In Experiment 2, Black Americans (<em>n</em> = 150; <em>M</em><sub>age</sub> = 26.52) were randomly assigned to listen to conscious rap or nonconscious rap and afterward completed group-based anger, collective efficacy, and collective action intention measures. Results: We found that listening to conscious hip-hop (but not nonconscious hip-hop) increased Black people’s intentions to engage in collective action (Experiment 1). In Experiment 2, we found that group-based anger, but not collective efficacy, fully mediated the relationship between listening to conscious hip-hop music and collective action. Conclusion: Exposure to some forms of artistic expression may influence emotion focused pathways of dealing with collective disadvantage among groups who are historically disadvantaged. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)</p>

<p>Objective: This article examines how social identification and group efficacy contribute to the growth of personal self-efficacy during and following a voyage-based Adventure Education Program (AEP). Method: Study 1 utilized a quasi-experimental nonrandom design to assess whether personal self-efficacy increased among youth who participated in a 10-day sailing AEP compared to youth who did not. Study 2 utilized a longitudinal design to assess whether increased personal self-efficacy found after the AEP would remain 9 months later. In each study, mediation models examined the extent to which social identity predicted increased personal efficacy through group efficacy. Results: Study 1 (<em>n</em> = 150) showed that voyage participants reported increased personal efficacy from the first to the last day of the voyage. Changes among nonvoyage participants over the same period were not significant. Study 2 (<em>n</em> = 153) replicated these effects using an independent sample and demonstrated that the increased efficacy found among voyage participants was maintained over 9 months. In both studies, the effects of social identity on heightened levels of personal efficacy were mediated by group efficacy. Conclusions: Youth taking part in a 10-day voyage experience long-lasting increases in personal self-efficacy. Moreover, positive social identity is associated with higher personal efficacy to the extent that the in-group is perceived to have greater efficacy. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)</p>
