Subjective experiences of well-being are multifaceted in nature, but the behavioral and neural correlates of subdomains of well-being are not yet well understood. Prior neuroimaging studies have primarily focused on single aspects of well-being (e.g., happiness). In the present study, we differentiated between five domains of well-being based on prior research (Green, van de Groep, et al., 2023): (a) family relationships; (b) dealing with stress; (c) self-confidence; (d) having impact, purpose, and meaning; and (e) feeling loved, appreciated, and respected. Young adults (age range = 20–25 years; n = 34) completed a self-evaluation functional magnetic resonance imaging task addressing the applicability of the items to the self on a scale of 1 to 4, followed by whether this item addressed a desire for change on a scale of 1 to 4. Behavioral ratings showed that young adults were least positive about dealing with stress and reported the highest degree of desired change for this domain. Higher positivity ratings in all five domains of current well-being were negatively associated with burnout symptoms. More burnout symptoms were associated with higher desire for future changes in the impact, confidence, and loved conditions. More depressive symptoms were associated with higher desire for future changes in all domains, except for confidence. Neural results showed increased activity in the precuneus for items addressing “positive family relations” and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex for items addressing “dealing with stress,” relative to the other domains, which did not result in distinct neural patterns. Together, these findings highlight the importance of assessing various components of well-being, which show distinct behavioral and neural patterns. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to test the roles of ethnic and racial identity (ERI) processes and autonomy-supportive parenting on college students’ psychological adjustment. Method: American college students of color (N = 505) completed questionnaires assessing ERI exploration and commitment, autonomy-supportive parenting, and psychological adjustment (self-esteem, depressive symptoms). Key variables were operationalized as latent constructs, and main and interaction effects were tested using the latent moderated structural equation modeling approach. Results: Higher levels of ERI commitment (but not exploration) and parental autonomy support each uniquely predicted higher levels of self-esteem and lower levels of depressive symptoms. Parental autonomy support moderated associations between ERI processes and psychological adjustment, and the nature of moderation did not differ across Black and Latino/a/x students. Conclusions: Supporting the psychological adjustment of college students of color necessitates acknowledging the importance of both parental and institutional efforts to encourage students’ autonomy strivings and ERI processes. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

Over the past decade, early careers of graduates with doctoral (PhD) degrees in clinical psychology have shifted in trajectory and scope. This brief report examines these shifts, specifically through initial employment settings (e.g., academic teaching positions, private practice, and medical centers) and initial employment activities (e.g., research, psychotherapy, supervision, and administration). We evaluate trends using American Psychological Association Commission on Accreditation report data from 2012 to 2024. Overall, there have been significant changes in initial employment settings and activities of clinical psychology PhD graduates. Hospital/medical centers and academic teaching positions demonstrated significant and substantial increases over this period. Independent practice and “other” also demonstrated significant but smaller increases. Notably, all initial employment activities have significantly increased since 2012, with research and psychotherapy being the most reported activities in 2024. These shifting employment trends may represent a challenge for programs, mentors, and graduates. Moreover, they align with recent calls (e.g., Berenbaum et al., 2021; Gee et al., 2022) for changes to training models in clinical psychology PhD programs. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to investigate the association of burnout and vital exhaustion (VE) symptoms with (measures of) the metabolic syndrome (MetS). Method: PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO were systematically searched until April 26, 2024. Studies investigating adult populations, burnout, or VE as exposures and (measures of) MetS as outcomes were included. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed independently by two observers. If at least three independent effect measures (in at least two studies) were available per association, meta-analyses were performed using random-effects models. Results: We included 101 studies (71% cross-sectional, 11% case-control, 13% prospective, 5% alternative) comprising 22 strong, 55 moderate, and 24 weak quality studies. Meta-analyses showed relevant but statistically nonsignificant associations of burnout and VE symptoms with higher incident (odds ratio [OR] = 1.53 [0.82, 2.87], I² = 0%) and prevalent MetS (OR = 1.28 [0.99, 1.64], I² = 85%), incident obesity (OR = 1.88 [0.81, 4.36], I² = 0%), waist-to-hip ratio (standardized mean difference = 0.62 [−0.65, 1.90], I2 = 95%), prevalent high waist circumference (OR = 1.14 [0.80, 1.62], I² = 28%), high triglycerides (OR = 1.49 [0.82, 2.71], I² = 40%), and a significantly higher prevalent hypertension (OR = 1.63 [1.44, 1.84], I2 = 51%). We found no clinically relevant associations with remaining MetS measures. Conclusions: Burnout and VE symptoms might be associated with a higher odds of prevalent and incident MetS, however, not statistically significant. These results should be interpreted with caution due to the cross-sectional design of most studies, use of unadjusted baseline data, and substantial heterogeneity in some analyses. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

Objective: Cannabis has become increasingly accessible to populations living with chronic health conditions such as HIV. Many people living with HIV are turning to cannabis for symptom relief despite the unclear risks to neurocognitive health. Our study sought to replicate and extend prior research by examining global and domain-specific neurocognitive performance between four groups stratified by use of cannabis (CB; CB+/CB−) and HIV serostatus (HIV+/HIV−). Method: Our demographically diverse community sample (N = 269) underwent exclusion and inclusion criteria to isolate the effects of cannabis use (CU) and HIV on neurocognition. We explored between-group comparisons of neurocognitive performance, probability of neurocognitive impairment, and interactive effects of CU/HIV serostatus. Results: Between-group comparisons revealed nonsignificant differences in global or domain-specific neurocognitive performance. However, the CB+/HIV+ group was three times (99% CI [1.18, 9.57]) more likely to be labeled with a memory impairment compared to the control (CB-/HIV−), and the CB+/HIV− group was twice (99% CI [.14, 7.47]) as likely to be labeled with an executive functioning impairment compared to the control. We also identified an interactive effect between the past 30-day CU and HIV serostatus for global (b = −.026, 99% CI [−.04, −.01]) and motor (b = −.052, 99% CI [−.07, −.03]) neurocognitive performance. Findings support a nuanced relationship between CU and HIV, which may partly explain mixed literature. Conclusions: Although we conclude that recent and heavy CU poses risk of neurocognitive decline among people living with HIVs, this effect is modest. Physicians and patients must weigh a possible decrease in global and motor neurocognition against the severity of symptoms being treated. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

ABSTRACT

Parentsʼ migration that leaves their children behind can have a large influence on their children. We explore the relationship between parental migration and learning outcomes of left-behind children aged 7–14 in Pacific Island Economies, particularly Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa, and Tonga, comparing children who live without at least one parent due to migration and children who live with both parents. We use propensity score matching on the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 6 data. We observe mixed findings of parental migration on childrenʼs learning outcomes, depending on the country, family structure, and gender. Our results show no significant differences between children of migrants and non-migrants in Fiji, Kiribati, and Tonga. In Samoa, children of migrants have significantly higher reading skills but struggle in mathematics. Samoaʼs strong extended family system appears to provide compensatory caregiving and educational support in the absence of parents. We also find that the effects in Samoa are isolated among girls. The role of extended family support, cultural norms, and gender dynamics are critical to understanding the findings. These insights have important implications for policies aiming to support left-behind children and leverage migration for human capital development.

To better understand barriers to prison reform, we examined the extent to which perceivers believed that prisoners deserved access to basic rights such as health care, safety, and food and to self-determination rights such as the ability to make choices, maintain relationships, or practice skills. Participants (N = 243) recruited via CloudResearch were randomly assigned to read one of four scenarios about a person who either contemplated, committed, was imprisoned for, or had completed a prison sentence for a crime. We found that incarcerated persons and those who had not served time were seen as less deserving of rights than a person who was released from prison. Rights determinations were also predicted by moral character judgments, dehumanization, and moral disengagement. The data point to a belief that incarceration serves to improve one’s moral character and humanize prisoners, which increases their eligibility for basic and psychological rights. Moral disengagement moderated the relationship between time in prison and deservingness of rights, indicating that moral disengagement increases one’s ability to deny other’s rights. Discussion centers on the implications of this research for prison reform. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)
