<imgsrc border="0" align="left" alt="image">Misophonia is a recently recognized condition characterized by extreme intolerance of idiosyncratic and repetitive sounds (often human-generated gustatory or breathing-based noises), coupled with intense affective-based reactions, that results in significant impairment and distress. Cognitive-behavioral therapy approaches, including exposure principles and stress management/distress tolerance skills, have demonstrated promise for the treatment of misophonia. However, efforts to develop interventions remain ongoing and further empirical examination of candidate treatment models is needed. In the pilot study described in this article, we preliminarily examined the efficacy of exposure and stress management therapy (ESMT) individually delivered via synchronous telehealth modality for adults with misophonia. Data from 26 participants (mean age=34.4 y) enrolled between April 2016 and September 2020 provided initial support for ESMT on the basis of pretreatment to post-treatment reductions in misophonia symptomology and increases in distress tolerance. Gains were generally maintained at 3- and 6-month follow-ups. The results did not appear to differ based on the order in which the exposure and stress management modules were delivered, which was randomized across participants. Participant perceptions of ESMT homework regarding adherence, comprehension, and usefulness were generally acceptable. This study provides preliminary support for ESMT as a potentially viable psychosocial intervention for misophonia and highlights the promising roles of exposure (with appropriate adaptations) and stress management for alleviating misophonia-related distress and impairment. Findings are discussed in the context of continuing to develop, refine, and test ESMT using more rigorous methodologies and diverse samples.</imgsrc>

Guided by the dual-factor model of mental health, this study aims to better understand the mental health challenges of Chinese American adolescents. With a sample of 206 Chinese American adolescents, a latent profile analysis was conducted by using both psychopathological symptoms and subjective well-being as indicators. Four latent profiles that are consistent with the dual-factor model were identified: complete, symptomatic-but-content, vulnerable, and troubled profiles. The complete mental health profile showed the most positive ethnic identity, the highest social–emotional competencies and academic engagement, and the least frequent peer victimization among all profiles. Students in the vulnerable profile had the most negative ethnic identity and the lowest social–emotional competencies. Students in the symptomatic-but-content profile reported the most frequent peer victimization, and those in the troubled profile showed the lowest academic engagement. Theoretical and practical implications for Chinese American adolescents’ mental health support are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

Asian American Journal of Psychology, Vol 16(3), Sep 2025, 231-240; doi:10.1037/aap0000377

Given that suicide risk among Asian American young adults is a significant public health concern (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017, 2021), our study examined the culturally relevant risk factors for this population. This cross-sectional study (N = 255) utilized the interpersonal theory of suicide (Van Orden et al., 2010) to investigate culturally relevant risk factors associated with perceived burdensomeness among Asian young adults in the United States. Using a structural equation model, we identified that perceived burdensomeness was positively associated with family shame, family perfectionism, and suicide behavior. Further, indirect effects of family shame and family perfectionism were positively associated with suicide behaviors through perceived burdensomeness. Family shame and family perfectionism act as distal risk factors for suicide desire, with perceived burdensomeness serving as a proximal risk factor. Mental health professionals working with this population should be aware of these culturally relevant risk factors. Implementing empirically supported therapeutic and psychoeducational interventions may help mitigate suicide risks among this population.

Asian American Journal of Psychology, Vol 16(3), Sep 2025, 241-254; doi:10.1037/aap0000371

The majority of the literature on parachute kids focuses on the short-term impact of studying abroad at a young age, unaccompanied by parents, and is based solely on the perspectives of the minors. However, there is very little discussion on (a) how to prepare those minors and their parents prior to the minors’ journey abroad and (b) how to better assess their psychological readiness for such a drastic change in their development. To bridge these gaps, we interviewed seven former Taiwanese parachute kids, as well as nine supporting adults, which included parents, counselors, teachers, and student affairs personnel. Former parachute kids generally reported being ill-prepared for the process despite the linguistic preparation they all received. They also indicated that being outgoing and having external support were helpful for their adjustment. Supporting adults reinforced the idea that those who reached out for support and were more open to experiences had an easier and more successful adjustment process. Based on the results, we offered recommendations for preparation, such as fostering an open mindset and increasing students’ knowledge about the new environment. Schools should actively help students prepare for their transition by offering workshops and support. Finally, we recommended assessing the minors’ sense of agency, mental health issues, family dynamics, and cultural intelligence as indicators for their psychological readiness for studying abroad.

American Psychologist, Vol 80(7), Oct 2025, 979-991; doi:10.1037/amp0001543

For over 60 years, the American Psychological Association (APA) has submitted amicus curiae (friend of the court) briefs with the aim of informing the courts about relevant scientific findings that may otherwise be absent from, or misrepresented in, the trial records of court cases. To achieve this aim, it is important that the summarized information accurately reflects the relevant scientific literature. The present study investigated the accuracy of the citations to empirical research in the 16 most recent APA amicus briefs by comparing the accuracy of the citing claims within these briefs to the original claims made in the cited articles. Case topics included false confessions, affirmative action, eyewitness testimony, child welfare, child custody, abortion, gender-affirming care, and sexual orientation change efforts. These briefs yielded 507 citations to empirical studies that were coded by pairs of independent coders. Results indicated that 72.8% of citations were accurate, 20.3% were somewhat accurate, and 6.9% were inaccurate. APA amicus briefs have been cited in a number of landmark rulings and have the potential to enhance the public welfare and the reputation of psychological science. It is, however, imperative that APA works to minimize miscitations in these briefs. We offer a set of recommendations for ways to reduce the number of miscitations in APA amicus briefs.
Marcus et al. (2025) examined the prevalence of miscitation in amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) briefs provided by the American Psychological Association (APA) to courts for the purpose of informing them about relevant scientific findings that may help guide decisions on legal cases. They found that 7% of citations in amicus briefs completely misrepresented prior research, and another 20% omitted key qualifiers of study findings. The purpose of the present commentary was to discuss miscitation in the context of amicus briefs, as well as in the broader context of psychological science. We argue that miscitation represents a potentially serious and questionable research practice that has implications for the field, as well as for applied extensions of psychology. Ultimately, it will be up to psychological scientists and the APA to prevent potentially harmful outcomes associated with miscitation by taking steps to ensure that prior work is accurately cited and reported.

American Psychologist, Vol 80(7), Oct 2025, 994-996; doi:10.1037/amp0001568

Based on a review of 16 recently submitted amicus curiae briefs by the American Psychological Association (APA) to the Supreme Court of the United States and other important courts, Marcus et al. (2025) strongly suggest that these briefs contain a significant number of inaccurate citations. They argue that these miscitations (a) misinform the court about important psychological findings, (b) could lead to significant injustice and harm, and (c) jeopardize the reputation of the APA vis-à-vis the courts and public. In this commentary, while acknowledging that inaccurate citations should be corrected, we take issue with (a) the manner in which Marcus et al. coded APA’s amicus curiae briefs, (b) the significance of the problems created by these miscitations, and (c) the authors’ misunderstanding of courts’ review and use of amicus curiae briefs in judicial decision making. In the end, while agreeing there might be a need for additional review to prevent inaccurate citation in amicus curiae briefs, we argue that most of the inaccurate citations are likely harmless errors with little effect on APA’s reputation or court decisions.
Marcus et al. (2025) code the accuracy of the citations to empirical research contained in 16 amicus curiae briefs submitted by the American Psychological Association (APA). Based on their findings that these APA briefs contained citations that they deemed partly or wholly inaccurate, the authors made recommendations that APA adopt strategies to reduce miscitations in their briefs. However, their application of a coding scheme developed for evaluating the accuracy of citations for the scientific literature to an applied context without modifications that reflect the differences between those two contexts inflated the proportion of citations the authors coded as partially accurate. Although the citations in APA briefs may not be perfect, the briefs themselves have served the important function of bringing psychological science to the attention of the courts.
This study aims to compare the quality of life and past suicide attempts of bipolar disorder (BD) patients with social media (SM) use. The study included 100 BD patients. All participants underwent assessments using the Functional Assessment Short Test (FAST), Social Media Use Disorder Scale (SMDS), and 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36). Past suicidal behaviors were also noted. FAST scores in the SM group were significantly (p

Personality disorders (especially borderline personality disorder) are highly stigmatized, and as such, clinicians often elect to withhold sharing the diagnosis with their patients. In addition, when diagnoses are shared, the conversations can be difficult for both the clinician and the patient, as personality disorders are often considered “lifelong” and “untreatable.” This article describes the PERSON approach for communicating personality disorder diagnoses to a patient, with an emphasis on borderline personality disorder. The PERSON approach builds on best practices on breaking “bad news” from the medical field, and emphasizes the importance of understanding the robust research findings demonstrating that personality changes and that personality pathology can be treated. The PERSON approach highlights the importance of the clinician’s self-reflection and preparation, empathically and directly communicating the diagnosis, allowing for reactions, acknowledging and combating stigma, ensuring that the conversation is ongoing, and nurturing hope for growth. Considering how common personality disorders are in mental health settings, the likelihood is that most mental health clinicians will encounter patients who meet criteria for a personality disorder. When the diagnosis is conveyed in a sensitive and respectful manner with faith that improvement is possible, patients should be more accepting of the diagnosis and may show stronger engagement with treatment.

ABSTRACT

The present study investigated secondary transfer effects (STEs) of minority–majority friendships among ethnic-cultural minorities; that is, transfer effects of having cross-group friendships with majority group members on attitudes towards other minority outgroups. Simultaneously tackling three lacunas in literature, we (1) analysed a large dataset of adolescent Muslim minority pupils (N = 1750, mean age = 14.84), (2) examined processes underlying primary and secondary transfer and (3) investigated how one of Allport’s ‘optimal contact conditions’, that is, authority (teacher) support, affects STEs. Overall, the results revealed little evidence for STEs, but there were two noteworthy exceptions. First, contrary to our hypotheses, a significant negative direct relationship was found between minority–majority friendships and attitudes towards two outgroups (Africans and refugees). Second, our results also revealed a significant positive indirect STE between minority–majority friendships and attitudes towards refugees, via attitudes towards the primary outgroup (Belgian majority group members). No cross-level interactions were found between cross-group friendships and school-level authority support, indicating that this ‘optimal condition’ does not seem to facilitate STEs. Taken together, our results cast reasonable doubt on the potential of STEs to ameliorate minority–minority relations.

Abstract

Dementia constitutes one of the most widespread neurological disorders, representing an important health concern due to its increasing prevalence. Among the various types of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common in the elderly, characterized by episodic memory impairment and also a decline in executive functions. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is considered a transitional stage between normal ageing and dementia, often described as a pre-dementia state. Distinguishing between these states is of paramount importance for the detection and appropriate care of patients. Functional Assessment Battery (FAB) is a screening tool for assessing executive function. In this study, 36 healthy individuals (HC), 31 single-domain amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) patients, and 29 Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients were assessed using FAB to determine its reliability, validity, and discriminative validity in a Spanish sample. Results indicated a good internal consistency of FAB in the AD sample (α = .71), but not in the aMCI group (α = .49). Significant differences between HC and both aMCI and AD groups were observed in the total scores of FAB. The FAB also showed good accuracy in distinguishing between HC and patients (AUC = 0.85), with an estimated optimal cut-off point of 16.5. However, its ability to distinguish between aMCI and AD individuals was lower (AUC = 0.68). More studies are necessary to corroborate our results using larger samples.
