ABSTRACT

Background

The mental health of college students has become a critical concern, with depression, anxiety and stress (DAS) reaching alarming levels. Despite the vital role of societal attitudes in shaping mental health outcomes, the factors and mechanisms influencing college students’ community attitudes towards mental illness (CAMI) remain underexplored.

Aim

This study aims to investigate the CAMI, mental health problems and mental health literacy (MHL) among Chinese college students and to analyse the relationships between them.

Methods

A total of 600 college students from Jinan City, Shandong Province, China, completed the Community Attitudes towards the Mentally Ill Scale, the Depression–Anxiety–Stress Scale and the Mental Health Literacy Scale. Data were analysed using structural equation modelling (SEM).

Results

The findings showed that DAS significantly negatively predicted positive CAMI, while MHL significantly positively predicted more favourable CAMI. Notably, MHL, as a moderating variable, attenuated the negative predictive effect of DAS on positive CAMI.

Discussion

The results of this study highlight the crucial role of the government, universities, and families in guiding college students to develop more positive CAMI, particularly in the post-pandemic era. Efforts should focus on creating a supportive mental health environment within universities. Additionally, the direction of mental health education should shift from merely imparting knowledge to a more contextualised and interactive educational approach, aiming to enhance understanding and acceptance of mental illness.

Despite societal perceptions of older adults as vulnerable, literature on resilience suggests that exposure to adversity and resources gained with life experience contribute to adaptation. One way to explore the nature of resilience is to document assets supporting adaptation. Interviews were conducted with older adults living in Canada at two time points during the COVID-19 pandemic, September 2020–May 2021 (T1) and January–August 2022 (T2). Reflexive thematic analysis was completed to report on what older adults identified as assets and how they understood the value of those assets for resilience. Participants indicated that the potential value of their contributions went largely untapped at the level of the community but supported individual and household adaptation. In line with calls for an all-of-society approach to reduce disaster risk and support resilience, creating a culture of inclusivity that recognizes the potential contributions of older adults should be paired with opportunities for action.

This article examines culture, an ambiguous yet prevalent concept in comparisons of crime and justice. It investigates the extent to which culture’s application and meaning across research reflects Western-centric bias in criminological knowledge-production despite it being a concept meant to advance understanding on different groups and places beyond the “Western” worldview. The article extends the discussion on Western-centric bias but also on culture in criminology by tracing the use of this concept on East Asian populations and by identifying patterns of application and meaning in international and comparative research through a scoping review of 230 journal publications. The findings address patterns of culture’s appearance in criminology journals in the past two decades and its meaning. Similar to previous scholarship on Western-centrism in criminology, the article finds that this bias does, too, exist in uses of culture but also shows how culture’s conceptual ambiguity is conducive to this bias, in that some groups and places are given one meaning of culture while others receive another.

ABSTRACT

Objective

This brief report examines how often a technology called QDAS (qualitative data analysis software) was mentioned in family science (FS) research between 2011 and 2020 and how it was described. It also provides data about qualitative FS research trends and examines whether there is a relationship between QDAS use and grounded theory.

Background

QDAS is a technology used by qualitative FS scholars, but little is known about its prevalence or how it is used. Research in this area is needed because technology can influence qualitative research practices in unknown or unacknowledged ways such as methodological homogenization.

Method

Empirical articles from five FS journals were examined for whether they presented qualitative findings during 2011–2015 and 2016–2020. Identified articles were then examined for their QDAS use. A chi-square analysis compared articles mentioning QDAS with those not mentioning it for whether they were more likely to mention grounded theory.

Results

The percentage of qualitative research findings increased from 15% to 17% across the two time periods; in those articles, QDAS use increased from 25% to 41%. Few details were provided about how the programs were used, and a moderate relationship was found between QDAS and grounded theory.

Conclusion

QDAS use is increasing in FS, and more detail needs to be provided about how it is used. This information is increasingly important due to the incorporation of automatic features into QDAS programs such as Generative Artificial Intelligence tools.

Abstract

Pregnant women were exposed to multiple sources of stress during the COVID-19 pandemic, raising concerns about the potential fetal programming effects of child development. A few studies show that prenatal maternal stress during the pandemic is associated with greater negative affectivity and more extraversion in infants. However, studies investigating this association are very few and need to be replicated. This study aims to prospectively investigate the association between prenatal maternal stress during the COVID-19 pandemic and infant temperament, while assessing the relative contribution of postnatal maternal stress. A total of 269 low-risk, French-speaking women from the province of Quebec, Canada, completed questionnaires during pregnancy to report on their prenatal maternal stress (general and pandemic-related). When their child was 6 months old, the mothers completed a second questionnaire to collect information on postnatal stress and infant temperament. The results show that prenatal maternal stress in the context of the pandemic significantly predicted infants’ negative affectivity and orienting/regulation factors, even after controlling for postnatal stress. The results support the fetal programming hypothesis, while highlighting the additional contribution of maternal stress during the child’s first months of life.

ABSTRACT

Objective

The purpose of this study is to determine the association between the level of commitment to ethical values and moral sensitivity of associate degree students.

Methods

This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study. The study included 365 students enrolled in associate degree programmes at a university between October and June 2023. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire, and the Ethical Values Scale for Students Studying in Health Sciences.

Results

In this study, it was found that the ethical values and moral sensitivities of the students were high. The age, gender, mother’s and father’s educational level, and father’s employment background of the students affected moral sensitivity. Also, age, gender, number of siblings, and mother’s and father’s educational level affected students’ ethical values.

Conclusion

A positive and statistically significant correlation was determined between students’ moral sensitivity and ethical values.
