ABSTRACT

Introduction

Although family care is crucial for the recovery of persons with mental disorders, no tool is available to measure the caring competence of family caregivers.

Aims

This methodological study aimed to develop a scale that reflects the caring competence of family caregivers of persons with mental disorders and to verify its validity and reliability.

Methods

Fifty initial items were derived on the basis of a previous study that analysed the concept of caring competence among family caregivers of persons with mental disorders. The initial items were revised based on content validity, and 48 preliminary items were selected. Data were collected from 361 families of persons with mental disorders. Data were analysed using factor analysis.

Results

The caring competence scale for family caregivers of persons with mental disorders consisted of five sub-factors and 22 items. The five sub-factors were compassionate relationship formation (six items), skilful disease management (four items), respecting the patient (four items), self-care (four items), and hope (four items). The developed scale had high reliability, with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.93. Verifying the criterion validity of the developed scale revealed that the correlation between the criterion scale (caregiving self-efficacy scale) and the developed scale was statistically significant, with a correlation coefficient of 0.63.

Discussion

This study presents empirical evidence for the reliability and validity of the caring competence scale for family caregivers of persons with mental disorders.

Implications for Practice

This scale provides reference for mental health nurses to evaluate the caring competence of family caregivers of persons with mental disorders.

ABSTRACT

This article focuses on the Shared Citizenship Paradigm that incorporates a contemporary set of values and beliefs about people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their right to participate fully in all aspects of life and society. The article provides an overview of the paradigm, describes the parameters of a shared citizenship measurement model, and discusses potential uses of shared citizenship measurement data. These uses involve guiding services and supports, providing formative feedback to individuals, organizations, and systems, and framing research opportunities and practices.

Psychological Methods, Vol 30(4), Aug 2025, 687-719; doi:10.1037/met0000603

Meta-analyses in the psychological sciences typically examine moderators that may explain heterogeneity in effect sizes. One of the most commonly examined moderators is gender. Overall, tests of gender as a moderator are rarely significant, which may be because effects rarely differ substantially between men and women. While this may be true in some cases, we also suggest that the lack of significant findings may be attributable to the way in which gender is examined as a meta-analytic moderator, such that detecting moderating effects is very unlikely even when such effects are substantial in magnitude. More specifically, we suggest that lack of between-primary study variance in gender composition makes it exceedingly difficult to detect moderation. That is, because primary studies tend to have similar male-to-female ratios, there is very little variance in gender composition between primaries, making it nearly impossible to detect between-study differences in the relationship of interest as a function of gender. In the present article, we report results from two studies: (a) a meta-meta-analysis in which we demonstrate the magnitude of this problem by computing the between-study variance in gender composition across 286 meta-analytic moderation tests from 50 meta-analyses, and (b) a Monte Carlo simulation study in which we show that this lack of variance results in near-zero moderator effects even when male–female differences in correlations are quite large. Our simulations are also used to show the value of single-gender studies for detecting moderating effects. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

In his engrossing new book, The Fort Bragg Cartel, investigative journalist Seth Harp argues persuasively that Bragg serves as a perfect living memorial for the forever wars, not simply because it trained and housed the men most caught up in the wars’ crux but also because the base and its environs exemplify the bone-deep domestic damage that the conflict spawned. Harp chronicles some of the more troubling goings-on in this haunted region and the secretive, self-destructive warrior culture that has defined it for decades.

The decriminalization of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-containing products has resulted in an increased presence of these products in households. This increased presence, along with frequent use of product packaging that mimics recognizable and appealing treats, has led to a rise in accidental ingestions of THC-containing substances by children. Some clinicians and child protective services (CPS) professionals have recommended that every accidental THC ingestion by a child, irrespective of the circumstances, should be reported for investigation by CPS. We argue that this recommendation has the potential to waste scarce resources, harm families, and worsen current inequities in CPS reporting. We offer an alternative framework to this blanket recommendation that clinicians can employ when providing care to a child who has ingested THC.

ABSTRACT

This research delves into the nexus between moral reasoning and ideological passion, examining their combined effect on ideological violence. Building upon the dualistic model of passion, we posited that obsessive passion for an ideology would predict increased ideological violence intentions. We further postulated that utilitarian moral reasoning would amplify the obsessive passion–ideological violence relationship. We used correlational methods to investigate these hypotheses in three distinct samples (Studies 1A–1C): members of the US Democratic Party (N = 209), members of the US Republican Party (N = 114) and police cadets in the Republic of Kazakhstan (N = 340). An experiment further tested these hypotheses with an additional sample of US Democrats (Study 2; N = 280). In Studies 1A–1C, our hypotheses were supported: there was a significant interaction between utilitarian moral reasoning and obsessive passion. Specifically, the relationship between obsessive passion and ideological violence was magnified for individuals with high levels of utilitarian moral reasoning. In Study 2, there was also a significant interaction between utilitarian moral reasoning and obsessive passion, such that being in the obsessive passion condition had a stronger positive effect on ideological violence intentions for participants with greater utilitarian moral reasoning. In all studies, deontological reasoning had no effect on the obsessive passion–ideological violence relationship. Our findings highlight the previously overlooked significance of utilitarian and deontological moral reasoning in the context of ideological violence. This research also introduces novel potential strategies for the prevention of violent extremism.
