Abstract

The purpose of the current studies was to examine perceptions of sex crime severity, framing, and framing congruency on mock juror decision making. Study 1 (N = 230) was exploratory and investigated lay perceptions of legally equivalent sex crimes for both a typical victim and perpetrator. Participants were presented with six sex crimes and answered questions regarding expected nonconsensual behaviors, physical and psychological injuries, perceived severity, and injury likelihood associated with each sex crime. Rape, criminal sexual act, and gross sexual imposition were perceived as high, moderate, and low severity sex crimes, respectively. Informed by Study 1, Study 2 (N = 545) tested whether sex crime frame severity (i.e., high severity versus average or low) or framing congruency among the prosecution and defence would influence mock juror judgments in the context of a criminal trial. Mock jurors read a mock trial, responded to identical measures from Study 1, and additionally completed measures regarding their perceptions of the victim, defendant, and rendered a verdict. Framing influenced perceptions of the defendant rather than the victim or verdict. No significant results emerged regarding framing congruency. Taken together, results from both studies suggest that equivalent sex crimes are perceived differently based on frame alone.

Public significance statement

Sex crimes of the same magnitude might be perceived differently by laypeople when framed using distinct, yet equivalent, terms. In turn, such frames can influence perceived crime severity and expected injuries. When placed within a criminal trial, framing appears to impact perceptions of the defendant more so than the victim. Taken together, verdict outcomes in sex crime trials might be impacted by the language used at trial even if legally equivalent, which can have negative consequences for victims seeking justice.

Abstract

Parents of children with disabilities are distinctly involved with their children inside and outside of school as they partake in special education procedures and support individualized child needs. Yet standards for parent involvement are largely designed for parents of children without disabilities, making them potentially less meaningful for parents whose children are enrolled in special education. Conceptual parent involvement frameworks are the foundation for existing involvement standards and practices; thus, they may benefit from expansions that support the use of these models for families with children in special education. We explore the alignment of existing parent involvement frameworks within the context of special education and parenting a child with a disability. To advance inclusivity for families of children receiving special education services, we offer considerations for future conceptual work on parent involvement and discuss possible implications of such expansions for research, practice, and policy.

Abstract

This article examines the dynamic relationship between defences and individuation in the analytic process. The concept of defence was introduced by Sigmund Freud in his 1894 paper, “The Neuro-Psychoses of Defence”, to describe the use of defences by some patients to resist the progress of the analytic process. Defence mechanisms are unconscious processes utilized to protect the ego and the Self against perceived threats. Obviously, the term “defence” is itself borrowed from military operations. As Jung proposes, the psyche has an instinctive urge towards wholeness and integration which he refers to as the process of individuation. Because the function of defence mechanisms is to avoid change, i.e., maintain homeostasis, defence mechanisms constitute an anti-individuation force within the psychic system. In analysis, there is an ever present “stealth war” between individuation and anti-individuation processes within the psyche. However, there is often little attention given to the influence of defences in much of the Jungian literature and in many Jungian training programmes. As a result, many Jungian therapists, candidates, and analysts are poorly equipped to recognize and engage in the “stealth war” occurring between defence mechanisms that stand in opposition to the progress of analysis and the ultimate aim of Jungian psychoanalysis, i.e., individuation. This article concludes with an appeal to maintain adequate focus on requisite fundamental analytic processes amidst an expanding interest in broad collective concerns.

Abstract

Since the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Version 5 reconceptualized autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in 2013, ASD research has broadened. To summarize what the field has identified regarding challenges and strengths in autistic romantic relationships, we conducted a content analysis review of peer-reviewed articles published from 2013 to 2024 using a systematic lens. Of the total possible relevant articles identified, 42 articles met our inclusion (peer reviewed articles) and exclusion criteria (e.g., focus on autistic children). The literature revealed several challenges in these relationships, including sensory sensitivities, stigmas, and communication barriers. Some strengths, such as pattern recognition and truthful communication, were found, but overall strengths-based research was lacking. There was no literature including relationships with both partners on the autism spectrum, and most studies only included individual-level data. Other gaps in the literature include barriers to relational support and limited inclusion of queer relationships. Future directions for research, practice, and policy are discussed.

ABSTRACT

This paper devises and implements a novel methodology to derive expenditure weights for regional (sub-national) consumer price indices for the UK from 2010 to 2022. Whilst high-quality expenditure data are available at the national level, this is not the case for subnational regions. As a result, regional expenditure weights have hitherto proved difficult to estimate in many countries, including the UK. By applying a Bayesian hierarchical regression model to survey data, this paper derives stable regional expenditure weights, which are combined with regional price quote data (where available) and national item indices, permitting regional inflation to be calculated in line with modern practice. The resulting evidence suggests that the recent period of high inflation had a significantly more severe impact on northern regions than on others, and that these effects are predominantly driven by differences in expenditure weights. The results also suggest a particularly important role for actual rentals for housing.

Abstract

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, citizens of many countries have been faced with health-related fear, as well as anti-establishment and anti-governmental anger. This emotional landscape colored the ongoing efforts by the authorities to convince citizens to accept various public policy proposals. In two studies (total N = 528, one preregistered) conducted in Poland in two different situations, we focused on the role of the simultaneously evoked pandemic fear and anti-government anger in shaping attitudes toward the pandemic regulations. For negatively evaluated proposals, both of these emotions worked in opposite directions: fear was associated with increasing support, while anger was associated with increasing rejection. However, for positively evaluated policy proposals, fear and anger worked in consonance, and both were associated with increasing acceptance of the proposed regulations. Thus, while fear seems to motivate the acceptance of even negatively evaluated proposals that are seen as protective ones, anger works to amplify or polarize the proposals’ basic evaluations. Our findings could help plan the implementation of public policies in societies in times of turbulent emotional landscapes.

Public significance statement

This research suggests that responses to pandemic policy proposals are related to pandemic fear and anti-government anger, and its findings may help in planning the implementation of public policies in societies where these two emotions occur simultaneously. Pandemic fear is associated with increased acceptance of all proposals. Anti-government anger is associated with increased rejection of negatively perceived proposals, but with increased acceptance of positive proposals.

Abstract

Stepfamilies are common and warrant attention from family theorists, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. The distinctness and centrality of stepparent–child relationships have prompted researchers to compile and synthesize study findings related to correlates of stepparent–child relationship quality. Building on a previous systematic review published in 2015, the purpose of this systematic review was to offer a 10-year update and synthesis of research focused on correlates of stepparent–child relationship quality from children’s perspectives in the United States. Four electronic databases were searched and nine academic journals with a family science orientation were reviewed from late-2014 onward. Beginning with 462 potentially relevant records following deduplication, screening and review procedures yielded a final sample of 26 studies. Correlates of stepparent–child relationship quality from children’s perspectives were grouped into one of the following six categories: individual characteristics, family characteristics, stepparent–child interaction, parent–child relational dynamics, stepcouple relational dynamics, and contextual factors. Limitations and implications are discussed.

Abstract

Although performative activism is often disparaged as actions meant to increase the participant’s social status rather than make real social change, not much is known about what defines it, and who, why, and where people participate in performative activism, and indeed, if it is a bad thing. The current study examined these questions in a qualitative case study of thirty students on a small residential college campus. We looked at how students understood performative activism in terms of identity (in-group vs. ally), site (offline vs. online), and motivation (ideological vs. peer- or self-focused). We found that students almost universally reported having participated in performative activism in the past, both offline and online, for causes related and unrelated to their social identities, and had multiple motives for participating. It was rare for a student to report completely peer- or self-focused motivations for participating. We conclude that performative activism, though disparaged, seems to be a normal part of young adult political development.

Public significance statement

Our research on performative activism in college students shows that even when actions are taken to support causes in ways that could be construed as shallow and self-serving, that they often are a way for people to begin to engage with a cause, which could lead to more sustained activism in the future.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly shifted traditionally in-person interactions to online. Because rural residents historically have lower rates of broadband internet access, they may have been less likely to conduct activities online than their urban counterparts, reflecting geographic digital inequalities. We examine whether residents of rural areas are less likely than residents of urban areas to have internet access, conduct various activities online, and use videoconferencing software during the COVID-19 pandemic using a probability survey of Nebraskans conducted in late 2020. We find that rural residents were less likely to have broadband internet access, a pattern that persists after accounting for characteristics of the residents. We also find that rural residents were less likely than their more urban counterparts to order food and groceries online, to stream movies or TV, or to use video conferencing for work and medical care, reflecting likely infrastructure differences in rural areas. Rural residents were also less likely to engage in online education activities, play games online, use social media, or use video conferencing to stay in touch with friends and family, but these geographic differences were explained by resident characteristics, suggesting that these differences in behaviors may be due to preference rather than lacking infrastructure.

Abstract

The standard measure of unmet need for contraception is not person-centered and may not adequately represent women’s contraceptive needs. To demonstrate the strength of a modified measure, we replicated the standard algorithm for unmet need, then created a person-centered algorithm that considers (1) whether nonusers want to use contraception and (2) whether users want to use a different method. We applied the standard and person-centered algorithms to a sample of 847 married Rohingya women aged 15–49 years living in camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, a population about whom little is known regarding contraceptive need. Forty-six percent of respondents were currently using contraception. Among users, 14 percent wanted to use a different method and 36 percent of nonusers wanted to use a method. Using the standard algorithm, 39 percent had “unmet need,” 18 percent had “no need,” and 44 percent had “met need.” Using the person-centered measure, 24 percent had “unmet need,” 38 percent had “no need,” and 38 percent had “met need.” The standard algorithm may overestimate unmet need among Rohingya nonusers, and the person-centered measure provides evidence of method dissatisfaction among users. This measure also complements existing person-centered measures of need and is an example of how incremental change can improve our understanding of women’s contraceptive needs.

ABSTRACT

Previous models of social identification and collective (in)action circumscribe their accounts to individuals’ belonging to a single social group. However, an individual may belong to a multiplicity of contextually valued and devalued social groups, some of which are characterized by conflict in terms of stereotypical content and/or incongruence (e.g., being gay and being a man, being a woman and being a leader). We propose an integrative multiple identities model that accounts for self-distancing from negatively valued groups as a means of reconciling stereotypically conflicting and hence psychologically incompatible social identities. Dis-identification with the devalued identity leads to collective inaction on behalf of that group even when such actions could benefit the self and group. We propose that self-distancing occurs among people who internalize stereotypic associations, such as those who endorse conservative political ideology and exhibit other system-justifying tendencies. By considering multiple identities alongside ideological motivations, our integrative model may explain, at least in part, why some individuals belonging to devalued groups refrain from challenging a status quo that harms groups to which they belong.
