Abstract

Interpersonal acceptance–rejection theory (IPARTheory) claims that when people perceive themselves to be accepted (rather than rejected) by important others in their lives, they tend to have greater psychological adjustment. Previous research shows that higher levels of adjustment are related to better academic performance, for young adults both with and without disabilities or impairments. Participants (n = 202; 54.9% men, 45.1% women) who had visual impairments (n = 71; 49.2% men, 50.8% women), hearing impairments (n = 70; 58.6% men, 41.4% women) or other physical impairments (n = 61; 57.4% men, 42.6% women) completed questionnaires about their childhood experiences of parental acceptance–rejection and their current level of psychological adjustment. Additionally, the participants’ grade point averages were collected from their instructors. Correlations, multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) and path analysis demonstrated that psychological maladjustment mediated the relationship between perceived parental rejection and academic achievement. Moreover, psychological maladjustment was shown to have a greater impact on academic achievement among respondents with ‘other’ physical impairments than those with visual or hearing impairments. These findings emphasise the importance for parents to be warm and accepting in their interactions with their offspring to maximise their offspring’s psychological adjustment and academic performance.

Against the backdrop of demographic change and the pluralisation of living arrangements, the article focuses on repartnering after widowhood, divorce and separation in older age in Germany. While theoretically framing repartnering as a lifecourse transition, the question arises of how later-life relationships form in relation to gender- and ageing-specific as well as structural and processual dimensions. Since previous research indicates that there are gender-specific patterns when repartnering in older age which differ from repartnering in middle age, the article explicitly accounts for gendered ageing and attitudes towards ageing. Using data from the German Ageing Survey (1996–2017), longitudinal hybrid panel regressions are modelled for 3,653 respondents, 11,628 observations and 179 new relationships. I propose to understand within-effects as processual and between-effects as structural dimensions of repartnering. The results for the structural dimensions show that the likelihood of repartnering is higher for men and for individuals with more negative attitudes towards ageing. The results for the processual dimensions show how repartnering becomes less likely the older one gets and the more positive one’s attitudes towards ageing become. The interaction term for gender and ageing shows that ageing has a stronger influence on the likelihood to repartner for women than for men. Additionally, the findings reveal a difference between forms of singlehood: in the short term, repartnering is less likely for divorced or separated individuals than for widowed individuals, whereas the opposite effect shows in the long term. In sensitising the lifecourse perspective with gender- and ageing-specific concepts and analytically separating processual and structural dimensions, this article demonstrates the importance of gendered ageing and of the linkage between relationship transitions. Applying hybrid panel models to lifecourse transitions in older age reveals the processual dynamic and structural embeddedness of repartnering in older age.

Knowledge about HIV and level of HIV-related stigma have been considered the main indicators of the community’s readiness to combat and bring the HIV epidemic to an end. Of all Serbia, the northern Kosovo province is especially vulnerable to the HIV spread because the infrastructure and the entire regulatory system had to be rebuilt after the ethnic conflict. The study objective was to examine the association between HIV-related knowledge level and attitudes towards people living with HIV (PLHIV) among university students from northern Kosovo using the quantile regression. A total of 1,017 students filled in an anonymous questionnaire. The questionnaire examined socio-demographic characteristics, HIV-related knowledge, attitudes towards PLHIV, sources of information about HIV, past experiences with PLHIV, and health behaviours. The dependent variable in the model was the attitude score (ATS) divided into quantiles (Q) in quantile regression analysis: Q0.10, Q0.25, Q0.50, Q0.75, and Q0.90. The independent variable was the knowledge score (KNS). The model was adjusted for relevant covariates. The majority of students had adequate HIV-related knowledge (89.6%) and 10.4% had lower knowledge. Most students also had a positive attitude (83.9%), while 16.1% were indecisive towards PLHIV. No students exhibiting wrong knowledge and negative attitudes were observed. The KNS and ATS significantly correlated with one another (ρ = 0.383; p = 0.001). The quantile regression model adjusted for variables associated with both KNS and ATS showed a negative association between KNS and ATS in the lowest quantile (Q0.10) of the ATS. In all other quantiles (Q0.25–Q0.90), a higher KNS was associated with having stronger positive attitudes towards PLHIV. This study confirmed that higher knowledge about HIV was associated with stronger positive attitudes towards HIV. Still, some students remain indecisive despite being knowledgeable about HIV. These students could benefit the most from continuing educational programmes to reduce the HIV-related stigma.

Abstract

In the context of a fiscal crisis and health pressures, Ghana’s government have been exploring additional pro-health taxes. The World Health Organization and World Bank support health taxes as ‘win-win’ policies that can, if designed effectively, simultaneously improve health and raise revenue for health spending. However, international evidence shows that health taxes can meet political and public opposition. Yet, there is little research that empirically examines public views of health taxes. We compared policy stakeholders’ perceptions of Ghanaian public support for health taxes with public views, seeking to understand the basis for potential public opposition, the extent to which evidence can shape public views, and whether tax framing and design influences public support. We undertook 28 semi-structured key informant interviews with stakeholders (from government, advocacy and business groups) and five focus groups with 38 members of the public (purposefully selected for diversity in gender, age, ethnicity, occupation and social background). We employed an innovative deliberative design for the focus groups, which enabled us to explore how public views responded to contrasting health tax ‘frames’. Stakeholders generally believed public support for health taxes was low, especially for more widely consumed products. Yet most focus group participants expressed strong support for health taxes, especially those targeting (more widely-consumed) sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). Support increased when health taxes were framed as measures to improve public health and/or create a fairer tax system, and when commitments were made to using resulting revenue for health spending (known as ‘earmarking’ or hypothecation). However, stakeholders and members of the public shared a concern that business influence in Ghanaian politics presents a key barrier to implementing effective health taxes sustainably. Overall, our findings suggest that health taxes with a clearly-framed health rationale could command strong Ghanaian public support but likely require effective advocacy to overcome political barriers.

ABSTRACT

Objective

Many individuals with psychosis consider themselves religious or spiritual and report using religion as a means of coping with their illness. However, research exploring the impact of religiosity and spirituality on the experience of psychosis is sparse, with most studies focusing on delusions or hallucinations with religious content.

Methods

A systematic review examined the evidence regarding the role of religiosity/spirituality in the maintenance and recovery of psychosis.

Results

A total of 35 studies were eligible for inclusion. In terms of maintenance, religiosity and spirituality were positively correlated with positive symptoms of psychosis. Individualised religious practice was associated with more severe delusions, while high intrinsic religiosity was associated with an increased severity of auditory and visual hallucinations. In terms of recovery, Positive Religious Coping (PRC) was found to improve wellbeing, quality of life, treatment expectancy, and medication adherence, while Negative Religious Coping (NRC) increased suicidality, positive symptom severity, and illness duration, and reduced social functioning. Holding religious/spiritual explanatory models was correlated with increased psychosis symptom severity and delayed recovery, while holding a bio-psychosocial explanatory model assisted with recovery.

Conclusions

Religiosity/spirituality appears to play a significant role in the maintenance and recovery of positive symptoms of psychosis. CBTp could be enhanced by integrating religiosity and spirituality into assessment, formulation, and the development of targeted interventions. This approach would promote more culturally adapted CBTp and improved engagement with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds in Early Intervention Services.
