<p>Objective: In an attempt to reduce juror bias, courts across the United States are educating jurors about how implicit bias impacts decision making. We tested whether novel implicit bias interventions—in the form of educational videos or judicial instructions—reduce the relationship between mock jurors’ explicit racial biases and their case decisions for Black plaintiffs and/or increase mock jurors’ trust in the courts to deliver fair outcomes. Hypotheses: We predicted that mock jurors’ increased explicit racial biases would predict less favorable case outcomes for Black plaintiffs but not for White plaintiffs (Studies 1 and 2). We presented competing hypotheses about whether an implicit bias intervention would mitigate, exacerbate, or have no effect on this relationship and explored whether they improved mock jurors’ trust in the courts’ ability to produce fair outcomes (Study 2). Method: In Study 1 (<em>N</em> = 407) and Study 2 (<em>N</em> = 1,016), White mock jurors were randomly assigned to judge a civil case with a Black or White plaintiff and then completed measures capturing their implicit and explicit racial biases. In Study 2, mock jurors were also randomly assigned to watch an implicit bias educational video, watch a video of a judge delivering implicit bias instructions, or neither (i.e., control condition). Results: As hypothesized, mock jurors’ increased explicit racial biases predicted less favorable verdicts for Black plaintiffs but not for White plaintiffs. Implicit bias judicial instructions increased pro-plaintiff verdicts and mock jurors’ trust in the courts in cases with Black plaintiffs. However, we did not find evidence that educational videos impacted these outcomes, which warrants further study. Neither intervention reduced the relationship between explicit racial bias and verdicts for Black plaintiffs. Conclusions: Anti-bias judicial instructions might hold some promise but need further testing; implicit bias videos had no impact. <p>Anxiety and sleep health associations are well studied, but contributing factors (e.g., level of rurality) to health disparities in this relationship are understudied, particularly in aging populations. The present study examined the moderating impact of rurality on associations between anxiety and aspects of sleep health in aging adults living in the United States. Cognitively healthy adults 50 years and older (<em>N</em> = 251; <em>M</em><sub>age</sub> = 64.7 ± 7.9 years) completed an online survey measuring residence zip code, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Multiple regression and simple slope analyses examined whether rurality (rural vs. nonrural; coded by delineating core-based statistical areas) moderated associations between anxiety and sleep, controlling for age, sex, education, income, depression, medication usage, and nutritional status (Mini-Nutritional Assessment). Rurality moderated the association between anxiety and sleep disturbances (<em>R</em>² change = .01, <em>p</em> = .04). Higher anxiety was associated with more sleep disturbances for rural (<em>B</em> = .05, <em>p</em>.05). In mid-to-late life, those living in rural areas may be more vulnerable to the impact of higher anxiety on worse sleep compared with those living in nonrural areas. Findings point to the need for a greater understanding of socioeconomic determinants of health and more tailored treatments, with potential emphasis on mitigating barriers impacting rural access to clinical treatments for anxiety and sleep health. <p>The following evidence-based case study is presented in order to describe the successful treatment of a case of postpartum obsessive-compulsive disorder in 24 sessions by integrating elements of exposure with response prevention with intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy. Exposure with response prevention is considered a first-line treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder, but it has not been shown to have any impact on attachment insecurity, which is a common comorbidity of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy is a type of brief psychodynamic (PD) therapy that can help patients resolve attachment traumas by experiencing unconscious, mixed feelings toward attachment figures (past, current, and transferential). Outcome data from this case (self-report measures and clinical interviews) demonstrate dramatic reductions in obsessive-compulsive symptoms, anxiety, and representational risk, as well as improvement in mentalization and parental reflective functioning, and improvements overall in attachment-based behaviors between the mother and her children. Clinical vignettes will provide some examples of the PD work along with summarizations of other therapeutic processes. An explanation of how experiential PD and behavioral techniques can work together to address attachment dynamics and obsessive-compulsive symptoms is discussed in order to demonstrate specifically how the therapeutic process led to these outcomes. <p>Group music-making is a socially rewarding activity that strengthens social bonds and leads to feelings of musical togetherness, that is, feelings of musical alignment and social connection. For skilled ensemble musicians, social rewards are closely tied to the aesthetic rewards that come from achieving a high-quality performance. What playing conditions encourage or discourage togetherness experiences? The purpose of this study was to show how joint and mutual attention contribute to experiences of togetherness, and how togetherness relates to communicative body motion in classical piano duo playing. The study tests two hypotheses: (a) that attention focus affects pianists’ togetherness experiences and communicative body motion; and (b) that pianists’ body motion can index the strength of their togetherness experiences. Piano duos performed two pieces under conditions that manipulated their attention focus to encourage or discourage joint or mutual attention. Body motion data were collected using optical motion capture, and pianists rated the quality of their playing experience on a number of scales via self-report questionnaire. Results show that joint and mutual attention improved togetherness ratings, while self-directed attention decreased enjoyment. Pianists moved their bodies less when the focus was self-directed and more at the end of the session than during a baseline performance. Coupling of motion periodicities, contrary to expectations, was lower in conditions that promoted joint attention than in the baseline. <p>Music is listened to in many different situational and media frames that can be expected to shape its experience. In this study, we were interested in the effects that different formats of audiovisual streaming of classical concerts can have on the aesthetic experience of their audience. We also investigated the effects of preferences for streaming features. A total of <em>N</em> = 525 participants watched one of four chamber music concert streams and reported their expectations, appreciation, and experiences. Overall, participants liked the concerts and reported positive experiences. The immersive emotional and social dimensions of aesthetic experiences with music, however, were only rarely activated, showing the disadvantage of recorded as compared to live performances. Several experience dimensions were influenced by streaming format: a stream that allowed audience members to interact on a chat platform afforded a stronger social experience, but less concentration; while a stream that included an introductory talk led to a better understanding of the programming and increased feelings of melancholy. Effects of the preference for certain stream types were only found in the stream that most resembled a standard audiovisual concert broadcast but were leveled out in other stream formats explicitly designed to counterbalance known disadvantages of nonlive performances. From our study, we draw conclusions regarding the importance of an experimental approach to frame effects not only on the aesthetic experience of music but also on the future of concert streams as a new musical medium in its own (aesthetic) right. <p>Objective: Alcohol outcome expectancies (AOEs), formed in early childhood, are correlates of future alcohol consumption and related problems. Social-cognitive theories suggest that AOEs become activated in specific social and physical location contexts. Prior research, primarily among university students, has aimed to identify situational influences on specific AOEs, as indexed by reports of AOEs in hypothetical drinking scenarios. This study aims to deepen understanding of AOE activation in real-world settings by examining social and physical situational correlates of AOE activation among adolescents ages 15–17 in daily life. Method: Adolescents (evaluable <em>n</em> = 102) reporting any drinking in the past month completed smartphone reports for 24 days. Adolescents indicated their social setting (e.g., solitary, peers, family), physical location (e.g., home, friend’s place, elsewhere), and strength of AOEs (tension reduction, enhancement, sociability) just prior to drinking in daily life. Results: Adolescents’ AOE activation prior to drinking was associated with their immediate social context and physical location. Specifically, drinking with peers present was associated with higher ratings of enhancement and sociability AOEs. In contrast, drinking with family members present and drinking at home were associated with lower ratings of enhancement and sociability AOEs. Conclusions: Our findings provide new information about social-contextual correlates of specific AOE domains in naturalistic settings among adolescents. Identifying situational relations with AOE activation in daily life is important to build social-cognitive models of alcohol-consumption behavior, particularly during adolescence as drinking experiences broaden. <p>Objective: Alcohol expectancies are well-studied between-person risk factors for problem drinking. However, no studies have tested mechanisms through which daily deviations in expectancies relate to drinking behavior during acute drinking episodes. This study filled this void, testing a sequential mediation model regarding the roles of social context, subjective responses, and craving in relations between daily deviations in expectancies and drinking behavior. Method: Participants (<em>N</em> = 131) who reported past-month binge, social, and solitary drinking completed 21 days of morning and afternoon ecological momentary assessments and event-contingent drinking reports. Multilevel models tested whether daytime expectancies predicted social context at drink initiation, which indirectly predicted within-session drinking through deviations in subjective responses and craving. Expectancies/subjective responses were measured across valence/arousal (high arousal positive/reward, low arousal positive/relaxation, high arousal negative/aggression, low arousal negative/impairment). Results: Increased daytime expectancies predicted experiencing the expected effect while drinking, even when controlling for context and consumption. Increased daytime rewarding expectancies predicted initiating drinking in social contexts, which indirectly predicted heavier within-session drinking via increased rewarding subjective effects and craving. In contrast, daytime relaxation expectancies predicted lesser within-session drinking, above and beyond context, subjective effects, and craving. Finally, increased daytime aggression expectancies predicted aggressive subjective effects, which indirectly predicted heavier within-session drinking via increased craving. Conclusions: Expectancies regarding later drinking predicted context-specific drinking and subjective effects, consistent with self-fulfilling prophecies of alcohol effects. Future research should consider testing the efficacy of coupling daytime fluctuations in expectancies with adaptive interventions seeking to increase protective strategy utilization. <p>This critical appraisal of a Cochrane Review assesses the efficacy of ketamine for treating unipolar major depressive disorder. The review included 31 randomised controlled trials involving ketamine. Results indicate that intravenous (i.v.) ketamine significantly improves antidepressant response compared with i.v. saline and, to a lesser extent, i.v. midazolam within 24–72 h. However, the evidence is constrained by performance bias owing to masking (‘blinding’) concerns and study heterogeneity, necessitating further robust research to confirm ketamine’s clinical potential.</p>

<div class="boxTitle">ABSTRACT</div>
<p>This article traces the role of Global South states in designing and implementing transitional justice. It draws on the cases of Sierra Leone and Colombia to highlight the positive contributions that states can make to transitional justice by driving, facilitating and/or protecting transitional justice measures. The current transitional justice literature predominantly views the Global South state’s engagement with transitional justice through the lens of politicization and distortion. The Global South states’ contributions to postconflict justice and accountability are thus rendered invisible or masked as political manoeuvring. This article argues against this otherization of the Global South state by highlighting that it can and does make positive contributions to transitional justice. It underscores that states in the Global South are complex actors, harbouring diverse interests, including interests of justice.</p>
