None of this is new in the unbroken American tradition of racist state violence and border rule. Under the administration’s border regime, though, violent escalation in immigration enforcement has been lauded, licensed, and now supercharged with unprecedented funding. The consequence will be more deaths like Alanis’, more deaths in ICE custody, like the 13 that have already taken place this year alone, atop a baseline of suffering for millions.

“We’re sending a clear message: Oklahoma’s schools will not be a haven for woke agendas pushed in places like California and New York,” said state schools Superintendent Ryan Walters (above) in a statement, adding the state is dedicated to “raising a generation of patriots, not activists”…. Teacher workforce studies in 2021 and 2024 found that recruitment and retention continues to be a problem for the state, particularly in rural districts and priority subjects like STEM and special education. The Sooner State relies heavily on emergency certified teachers who have no formal training to fill in the gaps. (emphasis added)

Recommendations for addressing key decisions during analysis are provided and supported with published examples from mixed methods studies focused on pediatric populations.

Conclusions

Integration of qualitative and quantitative data is the defining characteristic of mixed methods research but can be challenging to fully achieve and adequately report. Decision-making about the aims of the mixed methods analysis and how they will be achieved should begin early in the research process through collaboration among team members’ with expertise and experience in qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods studies. A variety of approaches to data integration and write-up of the integrated results can be taken and are reviewed in the current manuscript.

ABSTRACT

The allocation of attention to threatening stimuli is an evolutionarily salient aspect of development; however, different factors such as clinical symptomology and temperamental traits may relate to alterations in these attentional patterns. The current study used eye-tracking to investigate the attentional patterns of 60 preschool-aged children (M
age = 48.3 months, SD = 10.4 months) as they viewed images of emotional faces, including both threat-related expressions (angry, fearful) and nonthreat-related expressions (happy, sad, neutral). Areas of interest were created for the eyes and mouth of all faces. The Children’s Behavior Questionnaire was used to assess children’s temperament, focusing on the Fearfulness subscale as it might relate to attentional patterns to threat-related faces. Overall, results indicated differential attention based on the emotion being viewed, with both longer fixations and an increased number of fixations toward the fearful mouth as compared to angry. Correlational results showed that for attention to the angry face and eyes, children higher on temperamental fearfulness exhibited both shorter average fixation lengths and a greater number of fixations. These findings suggest that temperamental fearfulness might influence attention to threat-related faces. This topic is important to explore because altered social attention may continue to reinforce fearfulness in those higher on this temperamental trait, and this in turn could give the child a higher likelihood of developing difficulties later in life.

Abstract

Background and Objectives

Extended-release injectable naltrexone (XR-naltrexone) is an effective relapse prevention treatment of patients with opioid use disorder (OUD), but retention remains a problem. Previous trials have either only calculated the association of one or two predictors or used claims-based datasets with only limited data to identify these characteristics. This analysis tested multiple baseline and clinical predictors for association with early retention on XR-naltrexone using combined data from five consecutive studies enrolling patients with active opioid use.

Methods

Bivariate associations between patients’ demographic and clinical characteristics at baseline and during the weeks after the first XR-naltrexone injection, and receipt of a second injection were calculated (n = 200). Significant factors were included in a multivariable logistic regression model.

Results

148/200 participants (74%) received the second injection. Lower Hamilton-Depression Scale (HAM-D) scores after the first injection were significantly associated with receiving a second injection in univariate and multivariable analysis. The following factors were significantly associated with receipt of the second injection in the univariate but not in the multivariable model: longest period of abstinence 1–11 months, use of cocaine in the 7 days before enrollment, use of alcohol or cocaine in the week after first injection, lower severity of cravings for opioids after first injection, lower self-report withdrawal scores after the first injection.

Conclusions and Scientific Significance

Depressive symptoms after first XR-naltrexone injection are associated with nonreceipt of a second injection. Clinicians should educate patients about this risk and monitor for possible depression symptoms after the first injection.

The targeting of welfare is no surprise. Recipients of welfare are often castigated as ‘work-shy,’ and ‘scroungers.’ Yet the welfare state’s existence is rarely challenged. Undoubtedly it has been essential for working people, protecting them from the excesses of the free market. But, critically, it has always been valuable for capitalism. Amidst a growing working-class presence, the implementation of state reforms at the turn of the twentieth century was an acknowledgement of the need to cushion the effects of exploitation, or risk rebellion.

ABSTRACT

Background

In earlier research with prisoners, we observed that convicted stalkers had skill deficits in interpreting their experiences of stalking and their motivations for it, suggesting narcissistic vulnerability.

Aims

Our primary aim was to explore the prevalence of narcissistic vulnerability in men serving a prison sentence in England and to investigate differences in narcissistic vulnerability and attachment styles between men convicted of stalking offences and men convicted of other offences but serving similar sentences.

Methods

Participants were from across 16 closed custodial settings in England. Everyone serving a sentence for a stalking offence was invited to participate together with a same size sample of men serving similar sentences for other offences and without a stalking history. 25%–30% of the eligible men agreed to participate. Each completed three psychometric scales, rating themselves on the Narcissistic Vulnerability Scale (NVS), the Brief-Pathological Narcissism Inventory (B-PNI) and the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised (ECR-R) scale. A series of independent sample t-tests were used to compare the experimental group to the other-conviction control group.

Results

Twenty-nine individuals sentenced for stalking offences and 25 other prisoners, all men, completed. The stalking group had significantly higher mean scores on narcissistic vulnerability according to both scales and significantly higher mean attachment style difficulties together with higher mean anxiety scores and avoidant scores.

Conclusions

Our findings add data on aspects of personality to a limited pool that supports understanding of men convicted of stalking. Although our sampling and data collection were both limited by the COVID-19 pandemic conditions, our findings further evidence the case for intervention with respect to ameliorating the personality characteristics of narcissistic vulnerability and attachment styles of such men.
