Abstract

Objective

We aimed to explore the domains of white German parents’ racial–ethnic socialization (RES) in a superdiverse context.

Background

White individuals are becoming numerical minorities in many Western European cities, yet systemic racism and white supremacy remain widespread. In this context, some white individuals embrace diversity, whereas others perceive it as a threat. Understanding white parents’ RES in diverse contexts is crucial, as parents play a pivotal role in shaping their children’s beliefs and behaviors.

Method

We conducted qualitative interviews with 12 white German parents of elementary school–aged children and employed reflexive thematic analysis to analyze the data.

Results

We identified four main themes: silence about race and racism, adhering to white normativity, overtly reinforcing racism, and diversity socialization.

Conclusion

RES among white parents is a mechanism that can uphold or resist white supremacy. All parents’ messaging included aspects of both, indicating an ongoing embrace of white privilege in this superdiverse context, but also an emerging consciousness of inequality.

Implications

Fostering environments that reject white supremacy demands change at all systemic levels. Interventions to bridge the gap between emerging awareness and concrete actions, guiding parents in addressing racial–ethnic topics, are one vital puzzle piece to disrupt the intergenerational transmission of racism.

ABSTRACT

Close to two decades after Romania’s landmark legislation on the rights of the child and adoption, this paper explores six points of consensus concerning rights-based practice in child protection and public education. Drawing on conceptual work on ‘assemblages’ in social services reform and an analytical focus on inconsistencies, incoherences and tensions in professional practice, we explore 30 key informants’ narrative focus on ‘sites of strain’ in what they wished to be nation-wide rights-based social service provision, through a grounded theory-inspired analytical approach. Alongside three widely shared inadequacies in rights-based practice—good legislation, but inadequate implementation, wide variation in service quality, and the lack of an ethic of care in work with children—, we also highlight three positive developments flagged: growing awareness of children’s rights among children; legislative amendments based on children’s input and civic mobilisation; and the crucial role of NGOs’ ‘fantastic’ service provision. The paper concludes with policy recommendations for better managerial oversight, accountability and professional support from central government agencies.

Background

Childhood trauma has been associated with increased risk of substance use and poor sleep, with these factors linked to subsequent poor cardiovascular health. However, there has been little longitudinal research exploring these associations in adolescence, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To address this, we investigated longitudinal pathways from trauma to risk behaviours and cardiovascular health indices among adolescents in the 2004 Pelotas Birth Cohort, Brazil.

Methods

Lifetime cumulative trauma was assessed via caregiver reports up to age 11, and combined adolescent/caregiver reports at ages 15 and 18. At age 18, current problematic alcohol use, smoking, illicit drug use and sleep duration were measured via self-report and resting heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) were assessed. We tested for trauma risk behaviour–HR/BP associations using multivariable regression, population attributable fractions and counterfactual mediation.

Results

Of 4,229 adolescents (51.9% boys), 81.9% were trauma-exposed by age 18. Cumulative trauma up to ages 15 and 18 increased the odds of age 18 alcohol, smoking and drug use (adjusted ORs: 1.25–1.44). Sleep duration was unrelated to childhood trauma. Population attributable fractions indicated that childhood trauma explained ≥28% of age 18 substance use. Unexpectedly, greater trauma exposure was associated with lower resting HR and BP. Substance use partially mediated the effect of trauma on cardiovascular health indices.

Conclusions

Trauma is associated with substance use in LMIC adolescents. Prevention and intervention strategies targeting trauma are critical given this significant burden. Our finding that trauma predicts lower HR/BP warrants further exploration given well-established associations between trauma and poorer cardiovascular health in adulthood.

ABSTRACT

This special volume presents a set of papers on science denial and pseudoscience. I identify three key contributions. One is that social and behavioral scientists are able to able to analyze motivations and states of mind that contribute to the rejection of mainstream science and acceptance of pseudo-science and false claims. Two, the papers in this volume take a number of informal gleanings and suggestions, and subject them to rigorous and much-needed analysis. Three, the papers clarify that while some people who reject science may suffer pathologies, such as the desire for chaos or the expression of spite, most do not. Targeted interventions that accurately identify the target group are more likely to succeed than “one size fits all” approaches. That said, there is the potential tension between understanding science denial as a manifestation of pain and suffering versus understanding it as a problem of information deficit. The good news is that evidence suggests that most science deniers are not suffering pathologies, and that many people do benefit from good information, presented in engaging ways. Collectively these papers demonstrate that science rejection is a matter of both ignorance and willful rejection, and that both can be addressed, albeit most likely in different ways.
