Five years after the pandemic hit, California community colleges are still battling one of the most nefarious problems to surface after courses moved online en masse. Criminals continue to find ways to evade various checkpoints in their pursuit of financial aid and other benefits that come with being a college student….These fraudsters — sometimes called ghost students, Pell runners, or straw students — are hitting the system’s central application portal at an alarming rate. While spam filters stop many of them, colleges are spending hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars finding further fraud. Instructors, as the last line of defense, are struggling to balance due diligence, good teaching practices, and student support.

ABSTRACT

This article explores the application of open science practices, focusing on the challenges, barriers, and lessons learned from preregistering outcomes and analytic protocols in impact evaluation. Using the Health Profession Opportunity Grants (HPOG) Program Impact Study as a case study, we illustrate the balance between pre-specifying research plans and maintaining flexibility to adapt to unexpected findings. We discuss how preregistration can enhance transparency, credibility, and the overall quality of evidence, as well as practical considerations for future evaluations. Our insights aim to guide evaluators in applying open science principles to improve the rigor and integrity of impact evaluations.

The Counseling Psychologist, Ahead of Print.
Sexism is pervasive but often manifests as microaggressions against women, which are subtle, covert forms of gender discrimination. Thus, we developed the Women’s Microaggressions Scale (WoMenS) based on an existing theoretical taxonomy and content analysis of social media data. Two separate studies were conducted for exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). EFA supported an eight-factor, correlated structure and CFA supported a bifactor model, with eight specific factors and one general WoMenS factor. Overall, reliability and validity of the WoMenS were mostly supported in two samples. Specifically, the WoMenS subscales and body surveillance were positively correlated; the general WoMenS was positively correlated with anxiety, depression, body surveillance, and another measure of sexism but not life satisfaction. Furthermore, general WoMenS explained variance in anxiety and body surveillance above and beyond that explained by an existing sexism measure.

ABSTRACT

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are serious mental health problems that may have common developmental pathways. Adverse childhood environments coupled with trait impulsivity and emotion dysregulation purportedly increase the risk of NSSI and BPD. The primary aim of this study was to examine the association of these risk factors with NSSI and BPD over a 1-year period among young adults (N = 229; aged 18–35; 75.5% female). Participants completed measures of relevant variables at baseline and every 3 months over 12 months. Hypotheses were that emotion regulation difficulties would mediate the association of childhood maltreatment with NSSI and BPD and that impulsivity would moderate the association of childhood maltreatment with ERD. Findings from multilevel modelling analyses indicated that emotion regulation difficulties mediated the association of childhood maltreatment with both NSSI and BPD. Contrary to hypotheses, impulsivity did not moderate the association of childhood maltreatment with emotion regulation difficulties. These findings highlight the importance of emotion regulation difficulties in NSSI and BPD among young adults.

Abstract

Objective

The human–animal bond (HAB) has been shown to provide a buffering effect for stress and adversity, particularly when individuals experience lower social support networks. This study aimed to explore the relationship between the HAB, perceived human social support and resilience by assessing whether the HAB could moderate the impact of social support as a protective factor for resilience. Additionally, whether the relationship between the HAB and human social support may be curvilinear was explored.

Method

A cross-sectional study of a large community sample of pet owners (n = 392) and non-owners (n = 146) provided information about their human social supports and resilience, and the strength of pet owners emotional bond to their companion animal.

Results

There was no difference in levels of resilience between pet owners and non-owners, but social support was positively associated with resilience for both. The HAB was not a significant moderator between levels of social support and resilience for owners. However, there was a significant curvilinear relationship between the HAB and perceived human social support.

Conclusion

The lack of evidence for HAB being a buffer between perceived human social support and resilience may partly be due to the curvilinear relationship between the strength of the HAB and perceived human social support. Extremely weak or strong HABs may be correlated with a reduced capacity to build resilience and process adversity. Therefore, this study highlights the complexities of the HAB and its relationship with human mental health, offering alternative considerations for future research.

Education, Citizenship and Social Justice, Volume 20, Issue 1, Page 3-18, March 2025.
In this paper, we develop an open-ended approach to evaluating students’ citizenship competences. We aim to give students the opportunity to describe what citizenship means for them in personally relevant contexts. We developed three rubrics relevant to students’ citizenship in daily life. Students in grade 10 and 11(Mage = 16) evaluated their competences or completed an assignment which was assessed using rubrics. The results show that for both approaches, the majority of students were able to provide relevant input pertaining to their citizenship competences. However, students’ explanations were often brief, limiting the personal context they provided and the extent to which they demonstrated higher levels of proficiency. This study shows that employing rubrics for an open-ended approach to assessing citizenship competences shows promise in allowing students to share and elaborate upon their experiences and viewpoints, but more focus is needed on improving the quantity and quality of student input.

Oldest-old (age 80+) spousal care-givers of people with dementia experience unique challenges and concerns that they attribute to age and/or ageing, including difficulties providing care because of physical, cognitive or sensory decline; having fewer friends who can provide practical support; and having less energy for non-care-giving activities (e.g. leisure activities, self-care). Previous research on how older care-givers manage is not specific to oldest-old care-givers and may underrepresent their unique experiences managing age and ageing-related challenges. A limited understanding can compromise our ability to tailor services to ageing care-givers. The purpose of this research was to illuminate how oldest-old spousal care-givers of people with dementia manage ageing-related care-giving challenges and the barriers and facilitators to strategy use. The selective optimisation with compensation theory and the transactional theory of stress and coping informed our conceptualisation of management strategies. We used a narrative gerontology approach, with two or three semi-structured interviews with 11 care-givers aged 80–89 (25 interviews in total). Narrative data were analysed thematically. We identified four main themes that encompassed the strategies shared by care-givers: adjusting goals to lessen care-giving demands and to mitigate stress, using alternative means to reach goals and to mitigate stress, enhancing capacities to care and mitigate stress through engagement in non-care-giving activities, and choosing positive attitudes and perspectives to lessen emotional distress. We identified a myriad of facilitators and barriers to strategy utilisation in each theme. The study provides unique insight into care-givers’ management strategies, especially in relation to relocation of self and spouse and participation in non-care-giving activities, as well as insight into age-related facilitators and barriers. This research can ultimately help inform the tailoring of age-sensitive health and social care services to meet the needs of this group of care-givers as they age.
