Group &Organization Management, Ahead of Print.
Over the past few decades, scholarship on managing the work-family interface has expanded, particularly regarding family-friendly work activities (FFWAs) designed to alleviate various forms of work-family conflict. We bring together the broad, cross-disciplinary research on FFWAs using bibliometric performance and mapping techniques. Using these techniques, we review 40 years of FFWA research across different scientific disciplines to then synthesize the existing knowledge and identify its contributing entities (e.g., authors, journals), collaborations among some of the entities (e.g., co-author relationships), and main themes, and collaborations among authors. In other words, we map and describe the intellectual, social, and conceptual structures of the FFWA literature. Based on this, we organize and integrate the cross-disciplinary literature across levels of analysis using the Ability-Motivation-Opportunity (AMO) model into a nomological network of FFWAs’ antecedents and consequences. Then, we use this nomological net to further delineate research questions and provide avenues for future research. Taken together, our comprehensive review offers clarity on the current state of FFWAs research and provides recommendations for future studies to advance theory, research, and practice.

The new legislation essentially limits how much judges can reduce a prison sentence for mitigating factors (such as a guilty plea, young age or mental ability). A regulatory impact statement from the Ministry of Justice estimated it would result in 1,350 more people in prison. This and other law changes are effectively putting more people in prison for longer. By 2035, imprisonment numbers are expected to increase by 40% from their current levels, with significant cost implications.

American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine®, Ahead of Print.
Background: Antipsychotics and benzodiazepines are prescribed for hyperactive delirium despite their side effects and lack of supportive evidence. Valproic Acid (VPA) improves agitation without QTc prolongation, excessive sedation, and parkinsonism. However, high quality evidence for this is lacking in delirium. Methods: This retrospective study involved hospitalized patients seen by Palliative medicine from 10/1/2019 to 4/17/2020 who received VPA for at least 24 hours for hyperactive delirium. Patients were excluded if VPA was used for seizures or bipolar disorder. We hypothesized that VPA improves agitation and thus reduces the use of opioids, antipsychotics, and benzodiazepines. Results: Twenty patients, 50% women, and a median age of 81.5 years were treated. Nine had cancer, five dementia and two had strokes. The median daily VPA dose was 831.6 mg (IQR 671.4 -1016.4). Due to the small numbers, we did not find a statistically significant differences in benzodiazepine, opioid, or antipsychotic use on days 1, 2, or 3. VPA was used as monotherapy in 10 patients, with no additional antipsychotic or benzodiazepines needed. Eleven patients were on comfort care measures at the time of VPA initiation. Ten died in the hospital. Three were discharged home, and seven transferred to a skilled nursing facility. Discussion: This study explored the use of VPA in palliative care. VPA may be effective in treating aggitation. Randomized controlled trials are needed to validate VPA benefits in treating agitated delirium.

Group &Organization Management, Ahead of Print.
This study draws upon human capital resource theory to propose and investigate a nonlinear relationship between racial minority employee proportions in work-units and unit-performance, moderated by racial composition of the customer base. Time-lagged data obtained from 331 college bookstores and their customer bases – colleges, provide evidence for a concave nonlinear relationship between racial minority employee proportion and store sales, while data from a survey panel (n = 497) of service establishment managers support the assertion that racial minority employee proportion predict diversity-related human capital resources. Further, at high levels of this focal predictor, racial minority employee proportion is found to be negatively related to sales for colleges with low proportions of racial minority customers but does not influence sales for high-minority customer bases. I interpret these results utilizing extant theories of diversity and provide a roadmap for future research in this domain.
