<p>Restorative justice principles offer a framework for successful, community-focused alternatives to the punishment-focused criminal justice system in the United States. Brief restorative justice interventions (bRJIs) are economical, interactive programs designed to facilitate participants’ understanding of restorative justice and insight into the impact of crime. Yet, little is understood about the psychological mechanisms through which bRJIs are effective in promoting behavioral change for incarcerated people. The present study considers two proximate outcomes that may serve as mechanisms for behavioral change (perceived restorative justice understanding and sympathy) and tests the impact of a bRJI on these potential mechanisms for people in prison (n = 1,631). Employing a Solomon split sample technique, we performed exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to validate measures of perceived restorative justice understanding and sympathy, identifying a two-factor structure for each measure. Then, we tested the effect of a bRJI on perceived restorative justice understanding and sympathy. The findings indicated that compared to the preintervention scores, the postintervention scores were higher from both perceived restorative justice understanding and sympathy, consistent with a large and small effect size, respectively. These findings lay the foundation for future research examining these factors as plausible causal mechanisms of changes in distal outcomes such as recidivism and desistence. <p><p>Advances in Methods and Practices in Psychological Science, <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/toc/ampa/8/1" class="broken_link">Volume 8, Issue 1</a>, January-March 2025. <br>Cronbach’s α is the most widely reported metric of the reliability of psychological measures. Decisions about an observed α’s adequacy are often made using rule-of-thumb thresholds, such as α of at least .70. Such thresholds can put pressure on researchers to make their measures meet these criteria, similar to the pressure to meet the significance threshold with p values. We examined whether α values reported in the psychology literature are inflated at the rule-of-thumb thresholds (αs = .70, .80, .90) because of, for example, overfitting to in-sample data (α-hacking) or publication bias. We extracted reported α values from three very large data sets covering the general psychology literature (> 30,000 α values taken from > 74,000 published articles in American Psychological Association [APA] journals), the industrial and organizational (I/O) psychology literature (> 89,000 α values taken from > 14,000 published articles in I/O journals), and the APA’s PsycTests database, which aims to cover all psychological measures published since 1894 (> 67,000 α values taken from > 60,000 measures). The distributions of these values show robust evidence of excesses at the α = .70 rule-of-thumb threshold that cannot be explained by justifiable measurement practices. We discuss the scope, causes, and consequences of α-hacking and how increased transparency, preregistration of measurement strategy, and standardized protocols could mitigate this problem.</p>

<p><p>Clinical Child Psychology and Psychiatry, Ahead of Print. <br>BackgroundAdolescent presentations to the emergency department (ED) for suicide-related thoughts and behaviors (SRTBs) increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gender expansive youth were particularly impacted by the loss of gender-specific services, however, data examining ED pandemic presentations of gender expansive youth for SRTBs are scarce.MethodsData were collected at a tertiary care center in Canada. Adolescents aged 12 to 17 presenting with SRTBs were recruited during two periods: March 2018 – March 2020 (pre-pandemic) and March 2021 – May 2023 (during pandemic). Patient demographics, mental health symptoms, and pre-ED visit healthcare utilization were examined.ResultsWe identified 202 adolescents (70 pre-pandemic; 132 during pandemic), with a mean age of 14.3 years. Compared with pre-pandemic, during pandemic adolescents were more likely to identify as gender expansive [pre: 5.7% versus during: 24.2%; p = .01] and were of European descent [pre: 28.6% versus during: 59.1%; p < .01]. During the pandemic, gender expansive adolescents, on average, exhibited higher suicidal ideation, measured by Suicide Ideation Questionnaire Junior scores, compared with cisgender adolescents [gender expansive: mean = 64.3 (standard deviation = 12.1) versus cisgender participants: mean = 58.0 (standard deviation = 14.5); p = .03]. There were no differences in demographics, healthcare utilization, depression or anxiety symptom severity between gender expansive and cisgender adolescents.ConclusionsAdolescents presenting to the ED with SRTBs during the pandemic were more likely to identify as gender expansive than those presenting pre-pandemic. Gender expansive adolescents exhibited increased suicidal ideation compared to cisgender adolescents during the pandemic.Plain language summaryDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, emergency departments experienced an increase in suicide-related visits by adolescents. Gender expansive youth, i.e., youth whose gender identity does not align with their assigned sex at birth, were particularly impacted due to the loss of gender-specific services. In this study, we investigated possible factors to better understand the differences in suicide-related emergency department visits before and during the pandemic between cisgender and gender expansive adolescents. Our study comprised of 70 adolescents before the pandemic and 132 during the pandemic. We saw an increase in gender expansive youth and adolescents of European descent that visited the emergency department due to suicide-related concerns during the pandemic. We also found higher suicidal ideation among gender expansive adolescents compared to cisgender youth during the pandemic. However, gender expansive and cisgender adolescents did not differ in demographic characteristics, healthcare utilization, depression or anxiety symptoms. The pandemic appears to have changed the profile of adolescents seeking emergency department care for suicide-related concerns, emphasizing the importance of addressing gender diversity and shifts in outpatient mental health care utilization during societally stressful times.</p>

<p><p><sec><st>Background</st></sec></p>
<p>Canada has become the first country in the world to require warnings to be displayed on cigarette sticks. Tobacco companies were given a transition period, from 30 April to 31 July 2024 to ensure that all king size cigarettes sold in the country included warnings on the filter of each cigarette stick. Warnings on the filter of regular size cigarettes will be implemented from April 2025.</p>
<p><sec><st>Methods</st></sec></p>
<p>We used an online panel provider to recruit an open cohort of adults in Canada who smoked factory-made or roll-your-own cigarettes. Seven waves of data were collected at 3-month intervals between February 2023 to August 2024, with 10 521 observations across 4310 participants. Participants were asked about support for the inclusion of warnings on cigarette filters, accompanied by an image of one of the six prescribed warnings (eg, ‘Cigarettes damage your organs’). Smoking behaviours and sociodemographic characteristics were also queried.</p>
<p><sec><st>Results</st></sec></p>
<p>Generalised estimated equations were used to estimate support at each wave. At W1 (February 2023, prior to the policy announcement), 25% of participants reported supporting printed health messages on cigarette sticks, significantly increasing to 27% by W7 (August 2024, at the end of the implementation transition period). Participants were more likely to support the policy if they used other nicotine/tobacco products, roll-your-own cigarettes, had a recent quit attempt, intended to quit, or had higher risk perception of smoking harms, and less likely if they were older, female, white or reported greater reactance to warnings on cigarette packs.</p>
<p><sec><st>Conclusion</st></sec></p>
<p>Just as increased support has been found for a range of tobacco control policies post-implementation, we found increased support for warnings on cigarettes during the transition period. However, support for this policy among people who smoke remains low. Other countries considering implementing this policy may consider these findings.</p>

<p><p>Qualitative Inquiry, Ahead of Print. <br>This article proposes a methodology centered on collective, creative engagement to explore marginalized and silenced perspectives on disability. Focusing on collective poetry writing as a qualitative research tool, the article examines the collaborative poetry writings of 16 disabled people, specifically people living with cerebral palsy (CP). Drawing on Gary Alan Fine’s (2012) “Group Life” theory, the article analyzes the social dynamics involved in establishing a shared history through collective poetry writing. It analyzes the emotional bonding among participants and the collective energy that emerged throughthis engagement. These group dynamics served as a resource for re-evaluating and advancing frameworks for writing about, reflecting on, and understanding disability, and for giving people with disability the opputunity to collectively shape knowledge about their own lives. This article discusses how collective poetry writing can be a tool for amplifying often marginalized voices as well as the emerging challenges and methodological dilemmas inherent in the use of this method.</p>

<div class="sec"><span class="bold">Background</span>
<p>While early intervention in psychosis (EIP) programs have been increasingly implemented across the globe, many initiatives from Africa, Asia and Latin America are not widely known. The aims of the current review are (a) to describe population-based and small-scale, single-site EIP programs in Africa, Asia and Latin America, (b) to examine the variability between programs located in low-and-middle income (LMIC) and high-income countries in similar regions and (c) to outline some of the challenges and provide recommendations to overcome existing obstacles.</p>
</div>
<div class="sec"><span class="bold">Methods</span>
<p>EIP programs in Africa, Asia and Latin America were identified through experts from the different target regions. We performed a systematic search in Medline, Embase, APA PsycInfo, Web of Science and Scopus up to February 6, 2024.</p>
</div>
<div class="sec"><span class="bold">Results</span>
<p>Most EIP programs in these continents are small-scale, single-site programs that serve a limited section of the population. Population-based programs with widespread coverage and programs integrated into primary health care are rare. In Africa, EIP programs are virtually absent. Mainland China is one of the only LMICs that has begun to take steps toward developing a population-based EIP program. High-income Asian countries (e.g. Hong Kong and Singapore) have well-developed, comprehensive programs for individuals with early psychosis, while others with similar economies (e.g. South Korea and Japan) do not. In Latin America, Chile is the only country in the process of providing population-based EIP care.</p>
</div>
<div class="sec"><span class="bold">Conclusions</span>
<p>Financial resources and integration in mental health care, as well as the availability of epidemiological data on psychosis, impact the implementation of EIP programs. Given the major treatment gap of early psychosis in Africa, Latin America and large parts of Asia, publicly funded, locally-led and accessible community-based EIP care provision is urgently needed.</p>

<p><p>Global Social Policy, Ahead of Print. <br>This article examines two questions. First, how far have the green and social policy objectives of the European Green Deal and the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) been translated into ‘eco-social policies’ (i.e. demonstrate a ‘socio-ecological’ dimension) in the National Recovery and Resilience Plans (NRRPs) of four of the biggest beneficiary countries, namely, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain? And, second, how is the role of national welfare states articulated in these eco-social policies to support this just green transition? Our analysis shows first, that, although the analysed NRRPs have a socio-ecological dimension, this is very limited in terms of the share of ‘eco-social’ measures in the total number of policy measures in the NRRPs. Moreover, we find that the role of national welfare states in the identified eco-social policies of the NRRPs in the four country-cases we examine is significantly tilted in favour of what we call ‘benchmarking’ and ‘enabling’ functions, in contrast to what we call ‘buffering’ and ‘consensus-building’ functions. In that sense, the socio-ecological dimension of these national plans seems ‘unbalanced’ in terms of the functions that national welfare states play in it. The article concludes with some reflections on the implications of these findings for the role of EU policy legacies and frameworks and of national welfare states in shaping the emergence of eco-social policies as means to a just green transition and on some methodological challenges for the study of eco-social policies in the context of the European Green Deal and its implementation.</p>

<p><p>Administration &Society, Ahead of Print. <br>This article examines the concept of epistemic governance during crises, a situation that presents simultaneous challenges of information scarcity and overload. Epistemic governance refers to the processes shaping collective perceptions and influencing the understanding of a situation. The research employs a complexity thinking approach, focusing on the interdependency of phenomena, actors, and events, which resists reductionism and linear thinking. It illustrates how epistemic governance—comprising self-organization, diversity, trust, feedback loops, attractor, and agency—operates in crises. The study advances a novel approach to epistemic governance in crises, promoting effective decision-making and embracing complexity-informed research.</p>

<div class="boxTitle">Abstract</div>
<p>The client violence faced by social workers has been widely acknowledged, but research on the impact of client violence on turnover intention is scarce. Therefore, this study constructed a chain mediation model by incorporating two variables, fear and emotional commitment, from social workers’ psychological profiles. A questionnaire survey involving 602 social workers in central China yielded the following findings: (1) Client violence significantly and positively predicted turnover intention. (2) Fear and affective commitment serve as mediators between client violence and turnover intention. (3) Fear and affective commitment operated as chain mediators in the association between client violence and turnover intention. Specifically, client violence increases turnover intention by elevating the level of fear and decreasing affective commitment. The findings highlight the mechanism of the negative impact of client violence on turnover intention. Future practice should focus more on the psychological well-being of social workers and develop appropriate support to address the impact of client violence more effectively.</p>
