Feminist Theory, Ahead of Print.
Marginalised people fear and expect violence, often daily. This prompts us to ask, is anticipating violence a violence in and of itself? Asking and answering this question extends the feminist, critical race, violence and trauma studies project of broadening traditional understandings of violence to name ignored forms of violence as violence (e.g. epistemic or representational violence). Ultimately, we argue that anticipating discriminatory violence is violence in and of itself. To do so, first we contest the common assumption that violence is intentional. The idea that violence needs to be intentional is a long-held myth that functions to deny various forms of violence. Second, we challenge the idea that violence requires a clear perpetrator. Systems of oppression and discriminatory ideologies enact violence, but there often is no clear perpetrator. When we are preoccupied with claiming that violence involves an intentional actor, we neglect to attend to the ways in which oppressive ideologies and systems structure marginalised people’s daily lives and experiences of (anticipating) violence. Living under the Western capitalist cisheteropatriarchal regime renders the ‘everyday’ a site of trauma and violence. This framework for reconceptualising what ‘counts’ as violence creates space to move beyond violence in its most traditional forms: the punch, the slur. Anticipating violence is the logical consequence of living under systems of oppression. When a group of marginalised people collectively anticipate violence, it is clear violence has already happened and is happening all around us: we posit that our conceptualisation of anticipating violence as violence is not intended to validate all forms of anticipated violence.

Feminist Theory, Ahead of Print.
Interviewing is a commonly used qualitative method in social scientific research. However, researchers departing from feminist theories have long been critical of power and knowledge creation dynamics in the context of this method. In contribution to this literature, this article aims to introduce research subject inter-viewing, which is an interview guide-facilitated audio- or video-recorded interview between at least two research subjects. The researcher is the organiser and coordinator but is not present during the interview. Instead, the research subjects interview each other about the problem or phenomenon that the researcher delineates through interview topics, questions or vignettes. In this article, I critically explore research subject inter-viewing’s field of possibilities through seven research subject interviews with fourteen participants. In this critical exploration, research subject inter-viewing changed the power and knowledge creation dynamics during the interview process. It shifted to a dynamic between research subjects changing the scope of knowledge creation through the research subjects’ initiatives. Therefore, research subject inter-viewing contributes an alternative approach to interviewing that facilitates a transformative shift of power dynamics and opens new ways of co-creating sensitive or cultural knowledge in an interview setting.

Family-based treatment (FBT) has proven efficacy among adolescents with eating disorders (ED). However, it is not effective or suitable for all young people and their families, which makes alternative treatments important. This is the first pilot study to compare the relative effectiveness of manualised enhanced cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT-E) among a transdiagnostic eating disorder sample of adolescents for whom CBT-E was their first ED treatment (n=42), and a group who had previously started FBT which had been discontinued without full recovery (n=27). Participants (n=69) aged 13–17 with an eating disorder completed manualised CBT-E. Outcome measures included body mass index (BMI) centile, ED psychopathology and clinical impairment. Across the cohort, results showed improvements across ED psychopathology, clinical impairment and BMI centile. The effect of the intervention on ED psychopathology and clinical impairment did not vary between groups, nor did attrition rates. There was a difference between the groups on BMI centile, with those who had previously been treated with FBT showing no change in BMI centile, whereas those with no previous FBT increased BMI at post-treatment. Implications from this research suggest that CBT-E is a viable promising alternative and could be offered among those for whom FBT has not achieved full recovery.

Families in Society, Ahead of Print.
This pilot study explores social workers’ challenges in implementing antiracist policies within their organizations. The researchers utilized critical consciousness and institutional betrayal to delve into the complex power dynamics within social work organizations. The experiences of seven frontline social workers were explored through narrative interviews, which revealed a misalignment between social work values and organizational culture. Social workers observed racism in their organizations, inadequate organizational antiracist efforts, poor representation of diversity in leadership, poor antiracism training in social work education, and reported experiencing institutional betrayal. All were positioned in agencies that did not consistently uphold the NASW Code of Ethics. The findings suggest that social workers are experiencing institutional betrayal through domineering systems, which impedes their antiracism practices.

School Psychology, Vol 39(6), Nov 2024, 557-571; doi:10.1037/spq0000644

Visual analysis is the primary methodology used to determine treatment effects from graphed single-case design data. Previous studies have demonstrated mixed findings related to interrater agreement between both expert and novice visual analysts, which represents a critical limitation of visual analysis and supports calls for also presenting statistical analyses (i.e., measures of effect size). However, few single-case design studies include results of both visual and quantitative analyses for the same set of data. The present study investigated whether blind review of single-case graphs constructed using up-to-date recommendations by experts in visual analysis would demonstrate adequate interrater agreement and have correspondence with an effect size metric, log response ratio. Eleven experts (i.e., professors in school psychology and special education with visual analysis experience) analyzed 26 multiple-baseline graphs evaluating implementation planning, a fidelity support, on educators’ implementation and student outcomes, presented in a standardized format without indication of the variable being measured. Results suggest that there was strong correspondence between raters in their judgments of the presence or absence of treatment effects and meaningfulness of effects (particularly for graphs of adherence and quality). Additionally, a quadratic relationship was observed between aggregate results of expert visual analysis and effect size statistics. Implications for future research and limitations are discussed.
Abstract

Grouping students into different classes based upon their academic achievement or ability is a relatively common practice across the world, particularly in English-speaking countries. Yet some argue that teaching students in mixed-ability classes is a better approach, with important benefits for those from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds. Unfortunately, existing evidence comparing outcomes across these approaches is scant. This paper hence provides new international evidence on this matter, drawing upon data from the 2015 Trends in Mathematics and Science Study study. Our results point towards null effects; neither approach leads to demonstrably better outcomes for students than the other. This also holds true for young people from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds, suggesting that between-class ability grouping does not harm the educational prospects of these children. Some limited evidence does emerge, however, that primary school teachers believe they are better able to support struggling students—and challenge the highest achievers—when ability grouping is used.

In the absence of broad-based formal health insurance and social protection systems in much of sub-Saharan Africa, the family acts as the key provider of support to older people. This paper furthers our understanding of family support mechanisms in the context of low-income countries by focusing on support from outside the household, which has been less studied so far. By using the data of 3,114 people aged ≥50 from the second round of the Senegalese Poverty and Family Structure Survey, the paper examines how the living arrangements of older people are associated with receiving transfers from non-coresident kin. Our findings highlight a net advantage of women receiving net positive family transfers compared to men for some living arrangements. Results also indicate that living without a husband or an adult significantly increases the likelihood of older women receiving support from non-resident family members compared to those who live with both spouse and a younger adult child. However, these differences are not significant among older men. These results suggest that in constrained settings, decision-makers should consider older people’s living arrangements and potential external family support when designing public policies towards them, so as to optimise the impact of policy and interventions on their welfare.

“Unconscious ignorance undermines the foundations of democratic debate, trust in science, and respect for knowledge,” Carofiglio said, describing it as an attitude that poisons public discourse and fuels misinformation. On the other hand, he argues that we should embrace conscious ignorance—an intellectual humility that helps us recognize our own limitations while remaining receptive to the knowledge of others. This form of ignorance, like the Socratic “I know that I know nothing,” is the foundation of true competence.

Dementia, Ahead of Print.
This scoping review examined literature on dementia education programs (DEPs) for healthcare providers and students. The search was conducted using the Discover! search engine that includes 63 databases. The review included a total of 25 articles that met the eligibility criteria. There were numerous DEPs that varied by frequency and duration, mode of delivery, content, target population, program evaluation measures, and outcomes. Most involved nursing staff and students and took place in Canada, the US, and the UK. The most common delivery mode was a one-time in-person session and a wide variety of topics were covered, both general (e.g., understanding dementia) and specific (e.g., driving, delirium). Twenty different tools were used to measure primarily changes in knowledge and attitudes, with little attention paid to performance and care provision. Only three studies on DEPs focused on culture in terms of race and ethnicity. The implications of this scoping review for education are that DEPs need to meaningfully address culture and culturally safe care in order to respond to the increasing diversity of older adults and care providers. In terms of future research on DEPs, program evaluation must attend to the importance of consistent measures, translation of knowledge to practice, and sustainability.

Quantitative research on how grandparents fare when looking after grandchildren has mainly focused on general wellbeing indicators, showing that grandparenting is linked to higher wellbeing. However, global assessments of wellbeing reveal little about activity-specific experiences and only indirectly provide insights about how grandparents experience grandchild care. Whereas qualitative studies have observed diversity in grandparenting experiences, quantitative insights regarding potential strains of grandparenting are scarce. This study examines directly to what extent grandparents experience supplementary grandchild care as burdensome and obligatory, and tests – building on role strain theory – how differences in grandparents’ characteristics can explain these experiences. Analyses are based on data collected in 2015 and 2018 among 3,429 Dutch grandparents who look after grandchildren. Descriptive findings show that 20 per cent of the studied grandparents experienced grandparenting as fairly/very burdensome and 8 per cent as fairly/very obligatory. Ordinal logistic regression models with random effects show that more-intense grandparenting situations were linked to higher levels of burden and obligation. Moreover, grandparents in poor health, higher education and those with other responsibilities (e.g. paid work) were relatively more likely to experience higher levels of burden and obligation. Our findings imply that the understanding of non-custodial grandparenting as only rewarding might be one-sided, as positive and negative experiences can go together. There appears to be substantial heterogeneity in how grandparents experience looking after their grandchildren.

Self-integrity plays a vital role in the psychological wellbeing of older adults. The present study investigated whether or not the confrontation with negative, self-stereotyped information leads to a deterioration of older adults’ self-integrity. Additionally, the current study attempted to examine the mediating effects of sense of coherence and empathy on the relationship between self-stereotype and self-integrity. A total of 825 Chinese older adults aged 55 or above from Xi’an and Beijing were recruited as research participants. A self-stereotype scale, sense of coherence scale, interpersonal reactivity index and self-integrity scale were used. Results showed that self-stereotypes are negatively associated with sense of coherence, empathy and self-integrity. Furthermore, sense of coherence and empathy are positively associated with self-integrity and played important roles in mediating the relationship between self-stereotype and self-integrity. Findings of this study can contribute to an improved understanding of the mechanism of associations between self-stereotype and self-integrity in older adults. Lastly, results obtained can provide guidance for effectively improving older adults’ self-integrity to limit the negative effects of self-stereotypes.

Organisational priorities for health care focus on efficiency as the health and care needs of populations increase. But evidence suggests that excessive planning can be counterproductive, leading to resistance from staff and patients, particularly those living with cognitive impairment. The current paper adds to this debate reporting an Institutional Ethnography of staff delivering care for older patients with cognitive impairment on acute orthopaedic wards in three National Health Service hospitals in the United Kingdom. A key problematic identified in this study is the point of disjuncture seen between the actualities of staff experience and intentions of protocols and policies. We identified three forms of disjuncture typified as: ‘disruptions’, where sequenced care was interrupted by patient events; ‘discontinuities’, where divisions in professional culture, space or time interrupted sequenced tasks; and ‘dispersions’, where displaced objects or people interrupted sequenced care flow. Arguably disruption is an integral characteristic of care work; it follows that to enable staff to flourish, organisations need to confer staff the autonomy to address systemic disruptions rather than attempt to eradicate them. Ultimately, organisational representations of ‘good practice’ as readily joined up, impose a care standard ‘stereotype’ that obscures rather than clarifies the interactional problems encountered by staff.
