Probation Journal, Ahead of Print.
Research has shown that many women involved in the criminal justice system have prior experiences of trauma and victimisation. This paper, based on qualitative narrative research with mothers, identifies the specific gendered trauma trajectories of mothers with experience of custody in England. This includes experiences of domestic abuse, removal of children and issues with perinatal mental health. In many instances, these issues are closely interrelated adding further layers of cumulative impact to the trauma experienced. Drawing on trauma theory and pathways theory, these experiences are then analysed and suggestions for mitigating the impact of this trauma are proposed.

Current Directions in Psychological Science, Ahead of Print.
Any behavior humans can perform, they can performed in an “ostensive” way, that is, overtly attracting attention and providing evidence of meaning. The communicative principle of relevance is a lawlike generalization about ostensive stimuli and hence about human communication. Here I present the principle as a pair of simple and general empirical statements: one on the audience side and one on the communicator side. I also summarize recent developments: Experimental tests have proved supportive, theoretical analyses have connected the principle to evolutionary and developmental perspectives, and the principle has been used more broadly than before, far beyond the traditional domains of semantics and pragmatics. These developments consolidate the communicative principle of relevance as fundamental to understanding human interaction.

Journal of Disability Policy Studies, Ahead of Print.
Federal special education policies require state departments of education to collect data to measure progress in attaining state performance plan goals, with Indicators 13 and 14 measuring the Individual Education Program (IEP) transition process and post-high school student outcomes. Research suggests that higher transition indicator scores result in better post-school outcomes, but no research has yet demonstrated the impact transition education practices have upon indicator scores. This study identified transition education practices that impacted one state’s transition Indicators 13 (transition IEP process compliance scores) and 14 (post-high school outcomes). Eighty-three secondary special educators from 36 districts identified the extent their students engaged in various evidence-based transition practices. Hierarchical cluster analysis identified five transition education themes. Multivariate analysis of variance revealed few statistically significant results and several meaningful effect sizes indicating specific transition education practices that impacted Indicator 14 outcomes. Districts with students actively involved in IEP meetings had higher Indicator 13 scores and 14 outcomes. Districts with high to moderate number of students with paid jobs and money management experience had higher Indicator 14 outcomes. Districts that taught students to set postsecondary goals had higher Indicator 14 outcomes. Other results are described and policy implications discussed.

International Sociology, Ahead of Print.
The analysis presented in this article tries to address a puzzle – the widely recognized process of democratic backsliding in Poland was accompanied by a steady increase in popular support for democracy. It poses a question if the two phenomena are substantively related. To establish possible connections between them, I test three hypotheses involving populist winner effect, deepening of socio-political cleavage, and generational change. The first one assumes that democracy is more supported by populists when they form a government; the second one – to the contrary – states that populist polarization creates a wider gap in support for democracy, while the third one proposes that the relation is spurious, as trends in attitudes represent a gradual, long-term social change, at least in part related to generational replacement. Results show that the direct link between populist democratic backsliding and pro-democracy surge is relatively weak, while both processes can be related to a deeper sociological process of ‘splintering’ within Polish society.

Applied Psychological Measurement, Ahead of Print.
The design of an achievement test is crucial for many reasons. This article focuses on a population’s ability growth between school grades. We define design as the allocating of test items concerning the difficulties. The objective is to present an optimal test design method for estimating the mean and percentile ability growth with good precision. We use the asymptotic expression of the variance in terms of the test information. With that criterion for optimization, we propose to use particle swarm optimization to find the optimal design. The results show that the allocation of the item difficulties depends on item discrimination and the magnitude of the ability growth. The optimization function depends on the examinees’ abilities, hence, the value of the unknown mean ability growth. Therefore, we will also use an optimum in-average design and conclude that it is robust to uncertainty in the mean ability growth. A test is, in practice, assembled from items stored in an item pool with calibrated item parameters. Hence, we also perform a discrete optimization using simulated annealing and compare the results to the particle swarm optimization.

Abstract

We start from a general theory of intergenerational class mobility previously proposed as an alternative to the ‘liberal’ theory. In further evaluating these theories, we report empirical analyses of relations within the origins–education–destinations (OED) triangle, drawing on data for individuals born 1923–1977 in 17 European societies. In contrast with earlier research, we treat education in relative terms. We find that the tendency for fluidity to increase within class structures after World War II, rather than being the expression of a ‘worldwide secular trend’, was restricted to a distinctive historical period of rapid economic growth and class structural change. Furthermore, in accounting for this increasing fluidity, the role of education may easily be exaggerated. The weakening of the ‘direct’ OD association is of at least comparable importance to changes in the OE and ED associations. Consistently with the proposed theory, class structural change, insofar as it promotes greater upward mobility, would also appear to provide a favourable context for increasing fluidity. Where downward mobility increases, the growing motivation and the capacity of more advantaged parents to protect their children against déclassement constitutes a powerful source of resistance to change in endogenous mobility regimes.

Abstract

Over two decades, extensive research and heated debate have addressed tensions between carceral and abolitionist responses to gendered violence within feminism. Disagreements arise from the existing multiplicity of feminist approaches and divergent socio-economic and political contexts in which such violence occurs. At the same time, different conceptions of the state and community also impact on feminist organizing around these issues in particular contexts. This article analyses the tensions between so-called carceral feminism and abolitionist feminism in the context of Albania and Kosovo, two countries not only heavily impacted by domestic and sexualized violence and feminicide but also with a significantly rising feminist mobilization. Using the photo-elicitation method, we interviewed feminist activists and academics regarding the ways they interpret gendered violence, the strategies and interventions they deem most relevant in addressing it, and the contradictions and tensions that exist in their discourses and practices. Our aim is to offer a contextualized critique of carceral feminism, while illustrating the reasons and lack of alternatives that have impeded a transformative imagination towards abolitionist feminism.

The study focused on Italian mayors. Our findings support the idea that women face double standards when it comes to political violence. They are targeted even when they make the same decisions as men. Misogyny and gender bias may cause people to judge female leaders more harshly. Using detailed measures of mayoral performance, we found that the gender gap in attacks only appears when mayors perform poorly. In these cases, women are more likely to be targeted than men for similar shortcomings. This aligns with other evidence of double standards against women in the corporate world.

Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities, Ahead of Print.
Sensory processing disorder (SPD) can be defined as a neurophysiological difficulty in modulating or interpreting sensory stimuli; it is often seen in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We examined sensory processing among children with and without ASD, using an observational tool based on the clinicians’, child’s, parents’, and teachers’ self-reports. The Sensory Processing Measure (SPM) and the Sensory Adventure Measure (SAM) were administered to 57 children aged 6 to 10 years with and without ASD. Significant differences in sensory processing were found between groups, reported by clinicians (SAM), parents, and teachers (SPM). Evaluating SPD by a skilled clinician by observing the child adds further information beyond that collected from parents and teachers.

Abstract

In Lebanon, a country facing multilayered crises and an increase in reported cases of child maltreatment, the availability of a unified and comprehensive child safeguarding protocol in healthcare facilities remains limited. Healthcare providers are frontline in recognizing and detecting child abuse and neglect (CAN) cases in hospital settings. Therefore, the adoption of a child protection system in healthcare settings is much needed. We attempted to establish a program for child safeguarding identification, intervention and monitoring mechanisms in Lebanese teaching hospitals. Despite high levels of need, the establishment of this program faced major challenges in the context of multiple national emergencies. The latter included fragmentation of the child protection system and the collapse of the health sector. This paper aims to share these challenges and extract lessons learned for future implementation of a unified child safeguarding protocol in Lebanese hospitals.

Abstract

Publishing research in English-medium international journals has become highly valued in various academic contexts. The Russian academic context is part of this trend, which puts new pressures on Russian academics. Although a range of measures has been undertaken as publication support, Russian academics’ ability to produce high-quality papers for English-medium international journals remains low. In this paper, we present a study conducted to gain a better understanding of the possible reasons for this phenomenon. It draws on documentary sources produced by 139 academics working at 26 Russian universities. The findings of the study indicate that a large number of Russian academics remain under-represented; the existing publication support is still not focusing appropriately on publishing in English-medium international journals, and is insufficiently diverse to satisfy Russian academics’ individual needs. We conclude by suggesting that wider audiences of Russian academics should be engaged in publication efforts; higher education policymakers and institutional leaders should reconsider the role that higher education institutions play in preparing academics for publishing in English-medium international journals; publication support should focus appropriately on publishing in these journals. This paper will make a useful contribution to the literature by providing fresh insights into the issues experienced by Russian academics along their publication path and determining the areas that need to be addressed. In particular, this may be useful for academics from post-Soviet countries since many of them share common research traditions. However, potential beneficiaries are not limited to them.

Palliative Medicine, Ahead of Print.
Background:Palliative care and supportive care provided in the home for people with heart failure can improve quality of life, caregiver wellbeing and reduce healthcare costs. Identifying components of home-based palliative and supportive care in heart failure is useful to inform tailored care to people with heart failure.Aim:To identify and describe components of home-based palliative and supportive care in adults with heart failure.Design:A scoping review was undertaken in accordance with Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines. The protocol was registered prospectively with the Open Science Framework https://osf.io/ghcme/).Data sources:Embase, PubMed, CINAHL and Cochrane databases were searched from inception in May 2023 and re-run in January 2024. Original research focussed on palliative and supportive care in the home setting that included adults diagnosed with heart failure who have not undergone nor awaiting a heart transplant was included. Results:Results were extracted from 13 papers based on eight studies. The findings highlight that nurses supported by a multidisciplinary team, providing symptom management, patient and carer education and discussion of goals of care and advance care planning, facilitates home-based palliative and supportive care for people with heart failure. Conclusion:Ensuring patient and caregiver-centred care supported by a multidisciplinary team is essential to delivering home-based palliative and supportive care for people with heart failure. Further research focussed on the role of digital interventions in home-based palliative and supportive care, the composition of the multidisciplinary team and research which includes individuals across all stages of heart failure is needed.

International Journal of Behavioral Development, Ahead of Print.
The present study provided a novel examination of how children’s theory of mind (ToM) might be related to two maternal beliefs: (1) social dominance orientation (SDO: the belief that inequalities in society are justified) and (2) right-wing authoritarianism (RWA: a belief in following established authorities). We reasoned that these beliefs could affect maternal talk in that mothers with high SDO and RWA would be less likely to use mental state (MS) talk to explore peoples’ desires and feelings, particularly when talking about individuals of an outgroup (e.g., of a different ethnicity). As a consequence, there might be links between maternal beliefs and children’s ToM. We measured SDO and RWA in mothers, gave children theory-of-mind tasks, and measured the MS talk of 79 New Zealand mothers when asked to describe pictures to their 2- to 5-year-olds. Mothers with high SDO and RWA provided less MS talk when describing individuals of a different ethnicity, and mothers with high SDO and RWA had children with a worse ToM. The present findings provide unique information regarding the role of parent beliefs in children’s ToM.

However, results from a recent Gilead-funded clinical trial (Purpose-2) led by physicians at Emory University and Grady Health System indicate that a twice-yearly injection of Lenacapavir offers a 96% reduced risk of infection overall, making the injection significantly more effective than the daily oral PrEP.

International Social Work, Ahead of Print.
This article investigates the contemporary transnational and neocolonial characteristics of children’s welfare in the Philippines, drawing on the perspectives of young people in residential care settings (RCSs) (aka orphanages) as well as the views of programme and policy actors embedded across child protection systems. Its findings highlight the funding and governance roles of transnational actors in child and family welfare programmes, the commodification of children that these transnational dynamics engender and the Philippines’ dependence on international actors to support children’s welfare. Recommendations include the enhanced regulation of RCSs, expanded social protection measures and greater use of family-based care models.

Abstract

Exposure to domestic violence can lead children to adopt specific roles or behaviours to cope with violent situations, which can have detrimental effects on their lives and require significant resources to address. Domestic violence can also severely damage the parent–child relationship. Adults who experienced childhood abuse often feel the need to repair these relationships, but the lack of trust in the abusive parent makes this process particularly challenging. This study aims to explore the subjective interpretations and experiences of victimised adults in Taiwan as they work to restore parent–child relationships following the cessation of domestic violence. Employing a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, the researcher conducted semi-structured interviews with eight participants. Data analysis yielded three overarching themes related to the interpretation of restored parent–child relationships and eight themes pertaining to the experiences of restoring these relationships. These themes revealed that the core theme of the experience of restoring parent–child relationships among adults who experienced childhood abuse is ‘forgiveness and rebirth’. The study’s findings emphasise that the restored parent–child relationship is not an ideal one but rather a relationship that acknowledges the limitations of both parents and children. It is a relationship where children can demonstrate filial piety without being undifferentiatedly obedient. In the context of Chinese culture, where relationships hold great significance, the researcher suggests that relational resilience serves as the driving force that enables family systems to progress towards relational wellbeing. Mental health practitioners must recognise and respect the client’s cultural identity. When assisting adults who endured childhood domestic violence in mending their parent–child relationships, efforts should focus on fostering self-in-relation to promote their wellbeing.
