<p><p>Assessment, Ahead of Print. <br>The Persecutory Ideation Questionnaire (PIQ) is a valuable instrument to measure persecutory ideation. The aim of this study is to validate the scale in the Italian context and to extend the study of its psychometric properties using approaches from both classical and modern test theories. The results of the study, involving 700 individuals, confirmed the one-factor structure and the good validity and reliability of the scale. Full metric invariance and partial scalar and strict invariance were also supported across gender, age, and education level groups. Rasch analysis indicated that the 5-point response scale is well-functioning and that the PIQ is most appropriate to measure high levels of persecutory ideation. The results contribute to a better understanding of the measurement properties of the PIQ. The paper discusses the advantages and contributions of each method used to explore the measurement properties of the scale.</p>

<p><p>Applied Psychological Measurement, Ahead of Print. <br>Clinical instruments that use a filter/follow-up response format often produce data with excess zeros, especially when administered to nonclinical samples. When the unidimensional graded response model (GRM) is then fit to these data, parameter estimates and scale scores tend to suggest that the instrument measures individual differences only among individuals with severe levels of the psychopathology. In such scenarios, alternative item response models that explicitly account for excess zeros may be more appropriate. The multivariate hurdle graded response model (MH-GRM), which has been previously proposed for handling zero-inflated questionnaire data, includes two latent variables: susceptibility, which underlies responses to the filter question, and severity, which underlies responses to the follow-up question. Using both simulated and empirical data, the current research shows that compared to unidimensional GRMs, the MH-GRM is better able to capture individual differences across a wider range of psychopathology, and that when unidimensional GRMs are fit to data from questionnaires that include filter questions, individual differences at the lower end of the severity continuum largely go unmeasured. Practical implications are discussed.</p>

<p><p>Perspectives in Public Health, Ahead of Print. <br>Aims:Rapid intervention development, implementation, and evaluation are required for emergency public health contexts, such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic. A novel Agile Co-production and Evaluation (ACE) framework has been developed to assist this endeavour in future public health emergencies. This scoping review aimed to map available behavioural science resources that can be used to develop and evaluate public health guidance, messaging, and interventions in emergency contexts onto components of ACE: rapid development and implementation, co-production with patients or the public including seldom heard voices from diverse communities, and inclusion of evaluation.Methods:A scoping review methodology was used. Searches were run on MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and Google, with search terms covering emergency response and behavioural science. Articles published since 2014 and which discussed a framework or guidance for using behavioural science in response to a public health emergency were included. A narrative synthesis was conducted.Results:Seventeen records were included in the synthesis. The records covered a range of emergency contexts, the most frequent of which were COVID-19 (n = 7) and non-specific emergencies (n = 4). One record evaluated existing approaches, 6 proposed new approaches, and 10 described existing approaches. Commonly used approaches included the Behavioural Change Wheel; Capability, Opportunity, and Motivation Behaviour model; and social identity theory. Three records discuss co-production with the target audience and consideration of diverse populations. Four records incorporate rapid testing, evaluation, or validation methods. Six records state that their approaches are designed to be implemented rapidly. No records cover all components of ACE.Conclusion:We recommend that future research explores how to create guidance involving rapid implementation, co-production with patients or the public including seldom heard voices from diverse communities, and evaluation.</p>

<p><h2>Abstract</h2>
<p>For generations, women have relied on fertility awareness methods to plan and prevent pregnancy, for over a decade, many have been aided by digital tools to do so. New contraceptive fertility tracking apps (CFTAs)—that are backed by clinical efficacy trials to support their effectiveness as contraception—have the potential to enhance method choice and offer users a unique contraceptive option, but there is little evidence to inform the decisions around expanding access, particularly in low-and middle-income countries. We conducted a mixed methods study with quantitative online surveys (<i>n</i> = 1600) and qualitative interviews (n = 36) to explore the potential appeal of and demand for a hypothetical CFTA in one such market, the Philippines. Interest in using a CFTA was high among our Internet-engaged, urban study population, with 83.9% “definitely” or “probably” interested in using it. Across demographic profiles, respondents perceived the appeal of the method as “natural” and “convenient.” A majority were willing to pay for the method, though notably at a price (5.20 USD) below that of currently available CFTAs. We discuss various important factors to be considered before bringing a method like this to new markets, including the potential implications of equity constraints in reaching a wider market and the unexpected prevalence of other period-tracking apps not intended as contraception being used in this market that could complicate any future roll-out. These issues could be explored further with additional research.</p>

<h2>Background</h2>
<p>Older adults with major depression are at risk of frailty and long-term care needs. Consequently, screening for major depression is imperative to prevent such risks. In Japan, the Late-Stage Elderly Questionnaire was developed to evaluate older adults’ holistic health, including mental well-being. It comprises one specific question to gauge life satisfaction, but the effectiveness of this question to screen for major depression remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to assess the usability of this question to screen for major depression.</p>
<h2>Methods</h2>
<p>This retrospective cohort study used a large, commercially available claims database in Japan. Participants were older adults aged ≥75 years who completed the Late-Stage Elderly Questionnaire and were classified with and without new major depression within 1 year. We evaluated the questionnaire’s ability to screen for major depression using C-statistics, developing three models to assess the cut-off value based on responses to the life satisfaction question (‘Satisfied’, ‘Somewhat satisfied’, ‘Somewhat unsatisfied’, or ‘Unsatisfied’), estimating the sensitivity and specificity of each model.</p>
<h2>Results</h2>
<p>Among 11 117 older adults, 77 newly experienced major depression within 1 year. The C-statistic for screening major depression was 0.587. The model setting the cut-off between ‘Somewhat unsatisfied’ and ‘Unsatisfied’ the demonstrated lowest sensitivity and highest specificity, while the model setting the cut-off between ‘Satisfied’ and ‘Somewhat satisfied’ demonstrated highest sensitivity and lowest specificity.</p>
<h2>Conclusions</h2>
<p>Our results suggest that due to its poor screening ability and high rate of false negatives, the question assessing life satisfaction in the Late-Stage Elderly Questionnaire may not be useful for screening major depression in older adults and may require modification.</p>

<p><p>Assessment, Ahead of Print. <br>Unveiling the roles personality plays during childhood and adolescence necessitates its accurate measurement, commonly using traditional Likert-type (LK) scales. However, this format is susceptible to various response biases, which can be particularly prevalent in children and adolescents, thus likely undermining measurement accuracy. Forced-choice (FC) scales appear to be a promising alternative because they are largely free from these biases by design. However, some argue that the FC format may not perform satisfactorily in children and adolescents due to its complexity. Little empirical evidence exists regarding the suitability of the FC format for children and adolescents. As such, the current study examined the psychometric performance of an FC measure of the Big Five personality factors in three children and adolescent samples: 5th to 6th graders (N = 428), 7th to 8th graders (N = 449), and 10th to 11th graders (N = 555). Across the three age groups, the FC scale demonstrated a better fit to the Big Five model and better discriminant validity in comparison to the LK counterpart. Personality scores from the FC scale also converged well with those from the LK scale and demonstrated high reliability as well as sizable criterion-related validity. Furthermore, the FC scale had more invariant statements than its LK counterpart across age groups. Overall, we found good evidence showing that FC measurement of personality is suitable for children and adolescents.</p>

<p><p>The American Review of Public Administration, Ahead of Print. <br>Public administration scholars are devoting increasing attention to the concept of reputation. The emphasis reflects a long-standing concern in the field with the sources of power and influence on administrative processes. This study extends the investigation of reputation from organizational reputation to reputational signals regarding public sector professions. We begin with a definition of reputational signals. We then develop a survey instrument that measures reputational signals from two signalers: elected officials and people close to respondents. Results are presented for internal consistency, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, convergent and discriminant validity, and average variance extracted. Next, we conduct a path analysis to test the effects of reputational signals regarding public school teachers on two outcomes using two staggered survey instruments with 588 US adults. We find that reputational signals from both types of signalers are positively and significantly associated with the perceived prestige of the teaching profession. Furthermore, reputational signals from people close to respondents are directly and positively associated with support for teacher autonomy. In contrast, reputational signals from elected officials do not have a statistically significant association with support for teacher autonomy. We conclude by discussing avenues for future research.</p>
