Abstract

This study investigates the similarities and differences between Hong Kong kindergarteners’ shyness and social anxiety and their possible relations with social emotional adjustment and the development of receptive language abilities. Data were collected from three kindergartens, with 71 children (mean age = 52.6 months, SD = 7.28; 48% boys) and their major caregivers participating at two time points, six months apart. Findings showed that children’s shyness and social anxiety levels were strongly correlated, and both were moderately correlated with children’s social emotional difficulties. Interestingly, children’s shyness uniquely predicted social emotional difficulties beyond social anxiety, but children’s social anxiety did not significantly predict their difficulties beyond shyness. Additionally, neither shyness nor social anxiety were found to be associated with children’s Cantonese receptive language skills. Our results highlight the strong similarities between shyness and social anxiety. Given the intricate interplay among the constructs examined in this study, more research is needed to further understand their relations and interactions. This knowledge may help educators to identify appropriate intervention targets to facilitate better language outcomes among shy and socially anxious kindergarteners.

A robust literature links social stress exposure to alcohol use and associated cognitions such as craving. Romantic relationships are a particularly salient social stressor and conflict interactions are a risk factor for alcohol misuse. Understanding the relationship between couples’ return to baseline neuroendocrine levels following conflict may help to identify important individual and dyadic differences associated with alcohol misuse. The present study is a secondary data analysis (see [blinded]). Participants were 30 different-sex couples (N = 60) with current alcohol or drug misuse. Couples participated in a 10-min conflict conversation with salivary cortisol measured before conflict (Time 1), immediately following conflict (Time 2) and after a 45-min rest period (Time 3), with increased cortisol indicating an increased stress response. Partners who had more decrease in cortisol from Time 2 to Time 3 had significantly less days of alcohol use over the previous 90 days (B = −69.94, SE = 30.62, p = .022). Additionally, partners with lower relationship satisfaction had significantly more days of alcohol use over the previous 90 days (B = −.57, SE = .15, p B = −4.87, SE = 2.49, p = .05). These findings were qualified by an interaction such that partners with lower decrease in cortisol and lower relationship functioning reported significantly more drinking days and total standard drinks. These findings suggest that greater alcohol use may be associated with poorer relationship functioning. Additionally, in a controlled laboratory setting, slower neuroendocrine recovery from the stress of relationship conflict may be a risk factor for alcohol misuse, regardless of relationship satisfaction. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

Despite an established link between personality traits and relationship outcomes, few studies have examined whether personality impacts outcomes of couple interventions. Given the growing popularity of online relationship services, we examined whether five-factor model personality traits moderated change in relationship satisfaction, relationship confidence, and depressive symptoms of couples completing the web-based OurRelationship program. Three hundred couples were randomly assigned to the program or to a wait-list control group and were repeatedly assessed using self-report measures of relationship satisfaction, relationship confidence, and depressive symptoms. Overall, results suggested that five-factor model personality traits are mostly unrelated to changes in individual and interpersonal well-being. However, across conditions, higher levels of neuroticism predicted a smaller decrease in depressive symptoms (Aim 1). In addition, the effects of the intervention (vs. control) on change in relationship satisfaction and depressive symptoms were moderated by neuroticism, such that high levels of neuroticism predicted stronger intervention effects on relationship satisfaction and depressive symptoms (Aim 2). Lastly, the effects of conscientiousness and neuroticism on changes in depressive symptoms were partially mediated by baseline levels of depressive symptoms. These findings suggest that the OurRelationship program may already contain elements that address behaviors associated with high or low personality trait levels and that higher levels of neuroticism may actually augment intervention effects on relationship satisfaction and depressive symptoms. Given the inconsistency of our findings across the various outcomes as well as personality, further research is needed to determine the role of personality in web-based couple interventions. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

Objective: A change toward Eveningness in circadian sleep–wake behavior is generally seen from childhood to adolescence, but less is known about circadian changes during adulthood. Circadian changes during mid-adulthood are of high interest, since Eveningness associates with a range of health-related problems, including psychological symptoms and mental disorders. In this study, we examined the circadian stability across 10 years, from 42 to 52 years of age, and how it is associated with sleep and mental health in a Finnish general population cohort follow-up-based (n = 976). Method: Circadian type was assessed at both ages with a widely used item for self-estimated Morningness/Eveningness from the original Horne–Östberg Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire. Generalized estimating equations were used for analyzing how a change in Morningness/Eveningness was associated with sleep and mental health longitudinally. Results: Our findings indicate that the circadian type is a highly stable trait during mid-adulthood with mainly moderate changes occurring in 42.2% of adults and no circadian change among 57.8% of adults. Most changes occurred within the same circadian type (23.9%), second to changes between moderate circadian types (13.3%). Changes between the Definite Evening-types and Morning-types were very rare (0.5%). Stable Evening-types reported more insufficient sleep, discrepancy between sleep duration on workdays and free days, and depression as compared to stable Morning-types. Moderate changes toward Morningness, comprising mostly those within Morning-types, were associated with reduced distress and psychological symptoms. Conclusions: In conclusion, our findings show high stability of mid-adulthood circadian type. However, changes toward Morningness seem to be associated with improved mental health. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

Cigarette smoking puts individuals with or at risk for developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) in jeopardy of experiencing a major cardiovascular event. Contingency management (CM) for smoking cessation is an intervention wherein financial incentives are provided contingent on biochemically verified smoking abstinence. Conventional CM programs typically require frequent clinic visits for abstinence monitoring, a potential obstacle for patients with medical comorbidities who may face barriers to access. This preliminary study examined the feasibility and comparative efficacy of (a) usual care (UC; advice to quit smoking, self-help materials, quitline referral) versus (b) UC plus home-based CM for smoking cessation (UC + HBCM). HBCM entailed earning monetary-based vouchers contingent on self-reported 24-hr smoking abstinence biochemically verified by a breath carbon monoxide (CO) sample ≤ 6 ppm. Participants were 20 outpatients with a CVD diagnosis or qualifying CVD risk factor randomly assigned 1:1 to the two conditions. Intervention participants received 14 in-home abstinence visits over 6 weeks. Voucher monetary value started at $10 and escalated by $2.50 for each subsequent negative sample (maximum earnings: $367.50). Positive samples earned no vouchers and reset voucher value to $10, but two negative samples following a positive allowed participants to continue earning vouchers at the prereset value. Primary outcome was point-prevalence smoking abstinence at Week 6 assessment. More participants assigned to UC + HBCM than UC were smoking abstinent at that Week 6 assessment (90% vs. 30%), χ²(1, N = 20) = 7.5, p

Abstract

This study investigates whether deliberate “matching” of older volunteers with agencies, based on their skill sets and organizational needs, leads to increased volunteer satisfaction, commitment, and role identity compared to placements made without such considerations. Utilizing data from the Center for Excellence in Aging Services and Community Wellness (CEASCW) in 2019, a subset of 140 older adult volunteers from upstate New York was analyzed. Various statistical methods, including frequency analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling, were employed using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 23.0. This research introduces the concept of a prolonged transition into retirement and explores how aligning skill sets with specific volunteer opportunities can better cater to the needs of older adults, resulting not only in increased satisfaction but also in a more stable role identity and ultimately a heightened sense of well-being during later life transitions.
