This paper examines the perspectives of university teachers in Bangladesh regarding predatory journals, assesses their knowledge of the characteristics of such journals, investigates the factors that might influence their submission of papers to such journals, and explores their views on how universities can contribute to the identification of predatory journals. A total of 391 university teachers participated in this study. Chi-square tests were conducted to examine the relationship between participants’ demographic characteristics and their perceptions of open access and predatory journals. The findings revealed that several demographic variables were significantly related to university teachers’ perceptions of predatory journals. Among the respondents who reported possessing a good knowledge of predatory journals (n = 181), their understanding levels were assessed by assigning a score of ‘1’ for each correct answer and ‘0’ for each incorrect/unsure answer to 18 characteristics associated with predatory publishing. The scores obtained by this group of participants were transformed into percentiles and were categorized into three different understanding levels: poor, medium and high. The results of independent sample t-tests and ANOVA found significant differences in total correctness scores based on gender, designation and teaching experience. The study revealed that only 7% of participants had a high level of understanding of the characteristics, despite claiming to have a good knowledge of predatory journals. The findings of this study highlight the need to design and implement interventions to increase the awareness levels and combat the prevalence of predatory publishing in the academic community.

Objective: Aiming to identify potential intervention targets to achieve more equitable outcomes from behavioral weight loss (BWL) programs, the current study examined whether Black and White individuals experienced similar increases in physical activity (PA) engagement, perceived PA barriers, and PA enjoyment during an 18-month BWL program. Method: Adults (N = 290) enrolled in an 18-month BWL program from 2014 to 2016 completed accelerometer-based measurements of moderate-to-vigorous PA and self-reported measures of PA barriers and enjoyment at months 0, 6, 12, and 18. Results: Black participants had significantly fewer minutes of PA than White participants at baseline, 6, 12, and 18 months. Black participants reported fewer barriers to PA than White participants at 0 and 6 months but not at 12 or 18 months. They also reported higher PA enjoyment than White participants at 0 and 6 months but not at 12 or 18 months. Furthermore, whereas White participants had a significant reduction in PA barriers and an increase in PA behavior overtime, Black participants did not. There was no interaction between race and time on PA enjoyment. Conclusions: Traditional BWL interventions may be ineffective for promoting PA among Black participants and may not appropriately address the unique PA barriers that Black participants experience. An improved understanding of differences in PA behaviors during BWL among Black and White individuals could help delineate why Black participants do not appear to benefit as much as White participants from traditional BWL programs and inform intervention strategies. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

This study combined two samples of couples seeking services at an on-campus training clinic (n = 317 couples). The purpose of the study was to assess trajectories of change in relationship satisfaction across the first six sessions of treatment using latent basis growth mixture models (LBGMM) to determine whether there were distinct trajectory classes, and whether those classes were associated with alliance, and termination status. The results of the LBGMM showed two trajectory classes, one in which relationship satisfaction was initially higher and remained relatively flat, and one in which relationship satisfaction was initially lower and showed increases and decreases. These classes were associated with male partner alliance and termination status, with those in the first class more likely to end with agreement, and those in the second class more likely to end without agreement. These results are discussed in context of literature and clinical implications. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

Objective: This observational study aims to analyze the reliability of the innovative moments coding system for groups (IMCS-G), developed to respond to the need for reliable measures to detect markers of change in group interventions. The IMCS-G represents an adaptation of the innovative moments coding system, which is used in individual psychotherapy to assess innovative moments (IMs), that is, change in meanings that contrast with the clients’ problematic patterns. The second aim is to examine the evolution of IMs throughout group counseling sessions in members who improved versus those who did not improve. Method: The IMCS-G consists of seven IM categories, grouped into two macrocategories: individual and group IMs. The IMCS-G was applied to the transcripts of 36 sessions from four counseling groups for underachieving university students (N = 25). Two trained raters coded the transcripts according to IMCS-G procedures. The agreement between the raters and the reliability of the IM categories were calculated. The efficacy of the counseling groups was measured in terms of the improvement in the students’ academic performance, reflective functioning, and psychological well-being. Multilevel models were performed to study the associations between the emergence of IMs throughout the sessions and the improvement in outcomes. Results: Results showed that IMCS-G was highly reliable (agreement = 84.10%–96.85%; Cohen’s kappa = .85–.99) and that the students who improved in academic performance produced more IMs (β = .42, t = 1.99, p = .048). Conclusions: Findings suggest that the IMCS-G is a reliable system able to detect markers of change associated with academic outcomes. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

Objective: The brief form measure has been identified as an important aspect of routine outcome monitoring in clinical practice with its ability to provide timely and actionable feedback and data to providers and patients. However, there remains a paucity of brief forms for measuring processes in group therapy, especially multicultural processes. This study aimed to develop a brief form of the Multicultural Orientation Inventory–Group Version (MCO-G), a 27-item measure of the group’s multicultural orientation, to allow for continuous monitoring of the group’s MCO session-by-session. Method: This study was conducted using an archival data set consisting of 387 clients within 129 interpersonal process therapy groups. Item response theory analysis based on the graded response model was utilized to analyze the MCO-G inventory. Multilevel modeling was used to test the concurrent and predictive validity of the brief inventory, specifically by examining the association between the brief inventory and Patient’s Estimate of Improvement and Therapeutic Factor Inventory–8. Results: A brief eight-item measure of the MCO-G was found to have good psychometric properties. Additionally, concurrent and predictive validity was found for the MCO-G-8. Conclusions: Preliminary evidence suggests the MCO-G-8 is a reliable and valid measure. The MCO-G-8 may prove beneficial to group therapy facilitators and researchers interested in monitoring cultural processes over the course of therapy groups. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
