<p>The mental health of youth across the globe is in crisis. Indeed, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organization (WHO) Joint Programme on Mental Health and Psychosocial Well-being and Development of Children and Adolescents were developed in response to their conclusion that “…across the world, the lives of millions of children, adolescents, and their caregivers are limited by poor mental health and well-being.”(p3) The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have declared a state of emergency, citing increasing rates of youth mental health concerns between 2010 and 2020 that have been intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic. That youth mental health is in such dire straits is particularly striking given that many measures of global physical health in young people are improving.</p>

<p>American Journal of Men’s Health, Volume 18, Issue 3, May-June 2024. <br>African American/Black (henceforth Black) men face disproportionate risks of morbidity and mortality from both cardiovascular disease (CVD) and colorectal cancer (CRC). The American Heart Association’s Life’s Simple 7 (LS7) tool was designed to examine predictors of CVD with included behaviors also linked to CRC risk (i.e., smoking status, weight, diet, and physical activity). However, no studies have combined LS7 assessment alongside CRC screening history, which serves as a proxy for assessing CRC risk, in Black men. In this study, Black men aged 45–75 participating in annual community wellness events were screened for 6 of 7 LS7 measures (excluding diet, LS6) and self-reported CRC screening. Analyses conducted using R 4.0.5. revealed that Black men (N = 680), with an average age of 57.3 years (SD = 7.5), reported poor (39.7%), intermediate (34.6%), or ideal (25.7%) LS6 scores with higher scores corresponding to lower risk for CVD. However, for every 1-point increase in LS6 scores (0–6), there was a 26% lower odds of reported CRC screening (p = .001). In the fully adjusted model, men with 4+ ideal LS6 behaviors had a 60% lower odds of self-reported CRC screening compared to those with two ideal LS6 behaviors (p < .001). These findings underscore the need for culturally relevant interventions for Black men across all levels of cardiovascular health (CVH) to increase CRC screening uptake.</p>

<p>Past research has shown that the socioeconomic status (e.g., income or education) is associated with people’s self-evaluation, such as global self-esteem. In the present research, we argue that socioeconomic status also affects people’s belief of possessing the same rights as others (i.e., self-respect). In a cross-sectional study (N = 298) and a longitudinal study (N = 379), we investigated the relationships between income and education with three forms of self-regard. The only consistent finding was that income was related to self-respect over time even when controlling for self-love and self-competence, the core and well-studied components of global self-esteem. <p>Newcomer immigrant adolescents (NIA) represent a particularly vulnerable group in the United States, facing numerous stressors placing them at risk for social–emotional and academic concerns. Schools play a critical role in supporting NIA in the United States. Despite this, insufficient research addressing the needs of this group within schools has been conducted. Considering the complexity of engaging in community-based research with marginalized populations, such as NIA, in this article, we elaborate on the challenges we faced during our research with NIA and propose solutions to these challenges. <p>Sex differences in psychopathology are well-established, with females demonstrating higher rates of internalizing (INT) psychopathology and males demonstrating higher rates of externalizing (EXT) psychopathology. Using two waves of data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (<em>N</em> = 6,778 at each wave), the current study tested whether the relations between sex and psychopathology might be accounted for by structural brain differences. In general, we found robust, relatively consistent relations between sex and structural morphometry across waves. Relatively few morphometric brain variables were significantly related to INT or EXT across waves, however, with very small effect sizes when present. Next, we tested the extent to which each morphometric brain variable could account for the associations of sex with INT and EXT psychopathology. We found a total of 26 brain regions that accounted for significant portions of the associations between sex and psychopathology across both waves (almost all related to EXT), although the effects present were very small. The current evidence suggests that in children aged 9–12, multiple whole-brain and regional brain variables appear to statistically account for small portions of the sex-psychopathology links, especially for externalizing. <p>Organizations have increasingly relied on virtual teams (VTs). For VTs to succeed, the collaborative behavior of team members plays an important role. Drawing from the open systems theory and using a phenomenon-driven approach, we investigate the dynamic pattern of collaborative behavior convergence among members of VTs (i.e., the emergence of collaborative behavior consensus) and its relationship with VT performance. Moreover, we investigate the differential influence of external crises, exemplified by key dynamic facets of the COVID-19 crisis (i.e., COVID-19 health threat and social distance). We used a multilevel approach (i.e., time, individual, and team levels) with the multilevel group-process framework to test our hypotheses. Results from a survey of 3,506 participants nested in 703 teams suggest that collaborative behaviors of VT members tend to converge over time, leading to the emergence of collaborative behavior consensus. Furthermore, a dynamic COVID-19 health threat leads to lower collaborative behavior consensus over time. Moreover, our results show that collaborative behavior consensus is partially positively related to VT performance and is particularly important for VTs with a lower level of collaborative behavior at the end of the collaboration. <p>Prior studies have linked societal threats to a surge in conservative attitudes. We conducted three studies (N = 1,021) to investigate whether hypothetical threat situations impact peoples’ attitudes toward democracy or alternative systems. Study 1 shows that individuals under threat devaluate representative and participatory government types and show relatively stronger endorsement of less democratic alternatives. Study 2 clarifies that extranational threats elicit a greater shift toward nondemocratic ‘solutions’ than intranational threats and that citizens generally find a just process less important in times of crisis. Study 3 shows that the effect of threat on support for technocracy can be explained by heightened anticipated anxiety. This study revealed that teachers across the three different professional disciplines shared similar ideas about what should be addressed in the development of students’ ethical compasses. Their contributions were grouped into three core themes: creating students’ moral awareness, developing students’ moral skills and promoting students’ moral professional behaviour. The majority of the teachers used a wide range of planned and unplanned pedagogic–didactic actions (reflecting individual learning and cooperative and group learning) to enhance the development of students’ ethical compasses. However, teachers’ strategies were mostly unstructured and unreflective and depended on the individual teacher’s ability and knowledge to address moral themes. Furthermore, the study revealed two incompatible ideals: as role models, the teachers aimed to exemplify explicitly how to be a professional with an ethical compass. However, they also wanted to adopt a neutral stance because they were afraid to manipulate the students’ ethical compasses. Therefore, they avoided promoting <em class="a-plus-plus">the</em> ethical compass that they believed to be the best.</p>

<p>The article examines the results of a study of the resilience of teachers, students, and their parents 2 months after the start of a full-scale war in Ukraine. The total number of respondents who took part in the study is 14,556. There are employees of educational institutions (29%), students (22.41%), and parents (48.22%) from all regions of Ukraine among them. A reduced level of resilience of adult research participants (teachers, parents) and higher resilience of young people were revealed. The relationship between resilience and place of residence, forced resettlement, subjective assessment of one’s own security, involvement in various forms of education (teaching), as well as gender and age differences in resilience is presented. The results can become the basis for policy development regarding the system of support for teachers, students, and their parents in conditions of traumatic effects. <p>The purpose of this study was to develop a measure of racial–ethnic–cultural (REC) belonging for Black, Indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC). The iBelong Scale was designed to assess the multidimensional components of REC belonging across diverse BIPOC groups. The scale was constructed based on a grounded conceptual framework of REC belonging, and the initial pool of items received feedback from community members and content experts. Validation of the iBelong Scale comprised data from 808 BIPOC participants collected across three interrelated studies for the purposes of initial validation, construct validity, and test–retest reliability. In Study 1, an exploratory factor analysis yielded a 25-item scale with five factors: (a) Home, (b) Connection, (c) Authenticity, (d) REC Thriving, and (e) Self-Definition. Results from Study 2’s confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the five-factor model was an acceptable fit of the data and the best fit among competing models. Measurement invariance was assessed, and results indicated that the iBelong Scale measures REC belonging similarly across differing BIPOC groups. The iBelong Scale was related to a range of measures in theoretically expected ways, including positive associations with general belonging, racial/ethnic identity, and general well-being, and negative associations with loneliness and REC nonbelonging. Findings from Study 3 indicated the test–retest reliability of the iBelong Scale over a 2-week period. Limitations of the studies and implications for research and practice are discussed. <p>Humans determine who they can trust in a few different ways: by learning from ongoing social relationships, cultivating shared group identities, and building effective social institutions. All three can produce forms of social cohesion, but the latter (institutions) may prove crucial for broad cohesion in pluralistic societies. In this special issue, we present six articles on the psychology of social cohesion. They represent a wide range of contexts and scales; examining, for example, social cohesion among Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer youth within school environments, volunteering behavior and community solidarity, the influence of different forms of intergroup contact on cohesion versus social change, and using wise reasoning to reduce conflict. Broadly, these six articles highlight the nuanced antecedents of social cohesion and its relationships with belongingness, cooperation, and intergroup conflict. Taken together, we hope this special issue highlights the importance of social cohesion for psychological research, as well as addressing major societal challenges.
