<h2>Abstract</h2>
<h2>Introduction</h2>
<p>This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms of the development of suicidal ideation and its moderating and protective factors. Drawing on the Interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide, we proposed that disruptions to belongingness, in conjunction with tolerance of health risk, may influence the development of suicidal ideation above and beyond psychosocial changes such as disruptions to finances and work.</p>
<h2>Methods</h2>
<p>The study involved a longitudinal investigation of an Australian representative sample reporting suicidal ideation fortnightly for 12 weeks between March and June 2020.</p>
<h2>Results</h2>
<p>The results indicated that participants who reported higher levels of belongingness, mastery, and intolerance of health risk were less likely to experience suicidal ideation and had lower severity of suicidal ideation. Mastery significantly strengthened the negative link between belongingness and the incidence of suicidal ideation, while agreeableness significantly strengthened the negative link between belongingness and the severity of suicidal ideation over time.</p>
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p>The findings suggest that supporting effective social connectedness during times of isolation and promoting self-efficacy, mastery, and regulation of risk tolerance, may be crucial for suicide prevention and therapeutic intervention.</p>

<p class="a-plus-plus">This paper explores the custody and removal of homeless individuals as well as their rights and ability to defend themselves from unwanted psychiatric assessments and involuntary hospitalization. Involuntary hospitalization, a form of detention, is contextualized in public policy concerning housing and the social determinants of health, individual rights, the city’s shelter system and the right to shelter, and the racism and discrimination inherent in the distribution of homelessness. Involuntary psychiatric care dismisses personal views on psychiatry and medicine. Some adults who are homeless in New York City are at risk due to policies and practices that Mayor Adams suggests were meant to support adults who are experiencing homelessness and “appear” to have severe mental illness. As housing is a social determinant of health, a proper housing system very well may decrease the societal burden of mental illness. Individuals must not be subjected to nonconsensual psychiatric assessments or care due primarily to their lack of housing. Consensual care may be beneficent and its availability ethically appropriate. Beneficence is not an appropriate justification for involuntary hospitalization, so the additional ethical justification of preventing imminent danger is needed.</p>

<p>Dual sensory impairment (DSI), the combination of visual and hearing impairments, is associated with increased risk for age-related cognitive decline and dementia. Administering cognitive tests to individuals with sensory impairment is challenging because most cognitive measures require sufficient hearing and vision. Considering sensory limitations during cognitive test administration is necessary so that the effects of sensory and cognitive abilities on test performance can be differentiated and the validity of test results optimized.</p>
<div class="boxTitle">Objective</div>
<p>To review empirical strategies that researchers have employed to accommodate DSI during cognitive testing of older adults.</p>
<div class="boxTitle">Methods</div>
<p>Seven databases (<span>MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Global Health</span> and the <span>Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews</span> databases) were searched for relevant articles integrating the three concepts of cognitive evaluation, aging, and DSI. Given the inclusion criteria, this scoping review included a total of 67 papers.</p>
<div class="boxTitle">Results</div>
<p>Twenty-eight studies reported five categories of strategies for cognitive testing of older adult participants with DSI: the assistance of experts, the modification of standardized test scoring procedures, the use of communication strategies, environmental modifications, and the use of cognitive tests without visual and/or auditory items.</p>
<div class="boxTitle">Conclusions</div>
<p>The most used strategy reported in the included studies was drawing on the assistance of team members from related fields during the administration and interpretation of cognitive screening measures. Alternative strategies were rarely employed. Future research is needed to explore the knowledge-to-practice gap between research and current clinical practice, and to develop standardized testing strategies.</p>

<p>This meta-analysis synthesizes experimental studies on the immediate effects of discrimination on mental health, exploring the effects of different paradigms and discrimination types on diverse facets of mental health. We analyzed data from a systematic literature search (73 studies; 12,097 participants; 245 effect sizes) for randomized controlled trials with manipulation of discrimination as a predictor and mental health as an outcome using a three-level random-effects model. Experimentally manipulated discrimination led to poorer mental health (<em>g</em> = −0.30), also after controlling for publication year, region, education level, and methodological quality. Moderator analyses revealed stronger effects for <em>pervasive (g</em> = −0.55) compared to single-event manipulations (<em>g</em> = −0.25) and a trend toward weaker effects for samples with nonmarginalized (<em>g</em> = −0.16) compared to marginalized identities (<em>g</em> = −0.34). Gender and age did not moderate the effect. Discrimination had the largest effects on externalizing (<em>g</em> = −0.66) and distress-related outcomes (<em>g</em> = −0.41); heterosexism (<em>g</em> = −0.66), racism (<em>g</em> = −0.32), and sexism (<em>g</em> = −0.30) had the largest effects on mental health. Convenience sampling compromised generalizability to subgroups and the general population, downgrading methodological quality for all included studies. When interpreting the findings, selective samples (mostly young female adults with higher education), often limited ecological validity, and ethical restrictions of lab-induced discrimination need to be considered. These constraints likely led to conservative estimates of the mental health effects of discrimination in this meta-analysis. Future research should investigate more diverse samples, further explain the heterogeneity of findings, and explore protective factors of the effects of discrimination on mental health. <h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3>
<p class="a-plus-plus">The purpose of this study was to examine the rate of agreement between clinicians and judges in civil incompetency adjudications in incompetency and restoration cases and to determine predictors of court adjudications with clinician recommendation as a predictor. Court files were obtained for court-ordered requests (<em class="a-plus-plus">N</em> = 345) for incompetency evaluations from one urban county. Court files containing the legal opinion were linked with clinical files containing demographic variables such as age, education, sex, race, residency status, relationship status, and cognitive and functional testing. The latter were the Mini-Mental State Examination and Managing Money and Health and Safety subtests of the Independent Living Scales. In each case, we documented the clinician’s opinion about whether the examinee was competent or incompetent. Overall, the court agreed with the clinician 87.1% of the time. However, the rate of agreement was higher for incompetency adjudication (94.4%) versus competency restoration (55.9%). The only difference between cases of agreement versus disagreement was that the former were significantly older. In terms of predicting judicial decision-making, the clinician recommendation was significant even after controlling for demographic and functional variables. We address how these findings compare with clinician-court agreement for criminal cases and the implications of our findings.</p>
