Abstract

This study explored the interplay between self-reported symptoms of anxiety and selfesteem from the perspectives of female Mexican American adolescents and mental health therapists living in Arizona. Sixteen adolescents completed a semi-structured interview and 17 mental health therapists participated in focus groups via Zoom from June 2021 through May 2022. Six main themes to describe the interplay between anxiety and self-esteem emerged: interplay between anxiety and self-esteem; influence of external factors, such as home, school, and peer relationships; strategies and resources to address mental health; perceptions of how one is viewed by others; social pressures and stress; navigating multiple cultural backgrounds and trends. This study concludes that while adolescents and mental health therapists collectively agree on the interplay of anxiety and self-esteem, there is a disconnect between the perspectives which is attributable to the various roles and expectations female Mexican American adolescents experience.

Abstract

Decades of research have confirmed and delimited the effects of interracial contact on racial attitudes. A shortcoming of this literature is its framing of interracial contact as a counterweight to homophily. Accordingly, researchers often measure interracial contact at the same-race/different-race boundary, such as in friendships and dating relationships. Rather than asking whether any interracial friendship leads to any interracial dating, I ask how much crossing a specific boundary actually leads to crossing other boundaries. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), I investigate the consequences of early interracial friendship for later interracial dating across six racial boundaries. The results show that interracial contact with a specific group increases the likelihood of interracial contact primarily with that same group and rarely with other groups. I conclude with implications for future research as well as social policy that relies on interracial contact.

Abstract

Reinforcers frequently chosen may not offer the same nutritional value as fruits and vegetables. Prior researchers have explored preferences and the effectiveness of salty and sweet foods compared to fruits and vegetables, but the criteria for demonstrating effectiveness have often been arbitrary rather than academic. In addition, it remains unclear how the integration of these potentially nutritious reinforcers might affect learning or hinder learning efficiency. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate whether introducing fruits or vegetables as potential reinforcers could sustain responding achieved with salty or sweet reinforcers. The implications of this model for incorporating a variety of reinforcers while maintaining responding are also discussed.

Abstract

Introduction

Psychological trauma is an established risk factor for psychosis. Trauma-focused psychotherapies (TFPT) have been suggested as a potential treatment for reducing psychotic symptoms in those who have experienced trauma. We therefore sought to investigate the effectiveness, tolerability, and acceptability of TFPT for psychotic symptoms.

Methods

We conducted a systematic review of studies of any form of TFPT that measured psychotic symptoms across a broad range of diagnoses.

Results

From 2584 papers initially identified, 17 studies (857 participants) met eligibility criteria. TFPT were found to be well tolerated, with very few adverse events. Acceptability was also high, with a mean dropout rate of 20%.

Conclusions

Whilst the evidence of effectiveness for TFPT in reducing psychotic symptoms is weak, we found tentative evidence in favour of exposure-based interventions. Methodologically rigorous trials investigating the efficacy of TFPT for the treatment of psychotic symptoms are needed to assess this promising intervention.

Abstract

Sexual orientation and gender identity change efforts (SOGICE) remains a threat to LGBTQ + young people throughout many parts of the USA, increasing risks for many mental health problems, including suicidal behaviors. Little research, though, has examined the strategies activists use to ban licensed professionals (e.g., social workers) from practicing SOGICE. The present study, therefore, involved semi-structured interviews with 15 LGBTQ + individuals affiliated with a grassroots organization focused on banning SOGICE in one Southern state in the USA. Thematic analysis generated six themes: knowledge is power, empathy and communication, utilizing media platforms, professional development, awareness of diversity, and growth areas. Findings suggest LGBTQ + grassroots activism organizations should focus on educating members and volunteers about SOGICE, history, and the legislative process, strengthen empathy-related skills, amplify their voices through media platforms, provide opportunities for job skill development, and foster inclusive environments. Social workers can use these findings to strengthen activism-related skills among LGBTQ + individuals interested in becoming activists to ban SOGICE in Southern states.

Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Ahead of Print.
COVID-19 has been regarded as environmental disruption that catalyzed a multitude of organizational changes in nonprofit organizations. This study centers on the nonprofit workers’ experience of change. Specifically, this study investigates to what extent and how negative appraisals in the midst of the pandemic are related to intentions to leave the organization about a year after the start of the pandemic, at a point in time when the initial shock had settled into a sense of the “new normal.” Findings indicate that harm but not threat appraisals predict psychological contract violation and that psychological contract violation is related to behavioral resistance to change as well as intentions to leave. Unexpectedly, neither threat appraisal nor resistance to change was related to turnover intentions. We discuss contributions to theory, research, and practice.

Psychological Bulletin, Vol 150(1), Jan 2024, 82-106; doi:10.1037/bul0000411

Gambling problems have consistently been linked to suicidality, including suicidal ideation, attempts, and suicide. However, the magnitude of the relationship has varied significantly across studies and the potential causal link between gambling problems and suicidality is currently unclear. A meta-analytic literature review was conducted to (a) synthesize pooled prevalence rates of suicidality among individuals with gambling problems; (b) determine if individuals with gambling problems had an increased likelihood of reporting suicidality compared to individuals without gambling problems; and (c) review evidence on causality and directionality. A search in Web of Science, APA PsycInfo, APA PsycNet, Medline, CINAHL, ProQuest, Embase, and Google Scholar electronic databases identified 107 unique studies (N = 4,691,899) that were included for review. Studies were included if they were available in any European language and provided sufficient data for the calculation of prevalence rates or effect sizes. Two researchers extracted the data independently using a predefined coding schema that included the Newcastle–Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. Random-effects meta-analyses yielded pooled prevalence rates of 31.6% (95% CI [29.1%, 34.3%]) for lifetime suicidal ideation and 13.2% (95% CI [11.3%, 15.5%]) for lifetime suicide attempts. Individuals with gambling problems had significantly increased odds of reporting lifetime suicidal ideation (OR = 2.17, 95% CI [1.90, 2.48]) and lifetime suicide attempts (OR = 2.81, 95% CI [2.23, 3.54]) compared to individuals without gambling problems. Two studies reported that individuals with pathological gambling had an increased risk of dying by suicide. Metaregression analyses suggested that the risk of study bias was positively related to the prevalence rates of suicidal ideation. Sex proportions were found to moderate the odds of suicidal ideation, but the direction of the effect was inconsistent. For suicide attempts, psychiatric comorbidity and sample size were positively and inversely, respectively, associated with prevalence rates. The synthesis indicates that suicidality is common among individuals with gambling problems and hence should be addressed by help agencies. Inferences on causality and directionality are hampered by a lack of longitudinal studies. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)

Abstract

Despite its presence in everyday life, cultural appropriation is not well understood, perhaps because its definition, bounds, and conditions have not been clearly unpacked. The present study uses a between-subjects, mixed-methods approach and culinary-related scenarios to address possible factors that constitute appropriation (e.g., actor background and intent). Utilizing a sample of emerging adults from a small, liberal arts university (N = 167, 52% female, 65% white), results suggest that an actor’s background is not the sole factor in deeming an act appropriative. Rather, intent appears to be an even more pertinent factor to examine. Participants believe that it is possible to engage with cultural products or practices in a respectful manner, further emphasizing the role intent plays in perceptions of appropriation. Although our results help define the bounds of cultural appropriation, future research should consider connections between authenticity and appropriation as well as how observer background might impact perceptions of appropriation.

Abstract

Vocational activity holds many benefits for people with severe mental illness. The purpose of the present study is to explore potential benefits of vocational activity on self-esteem and benefits as described by employment specialists. Data from 148 adults with schizophrenia spectrum disorders participating in a comprehensive vocational rehabilitation program was collected as part of the Job Management Program (JUMP) study. Assessments were conducted at inclusion, post intervention (10 months) and 2 years after inclusion. Multiple regressions and mixed between-within subjects analysis of variance were applied to assess potential effects of vocational activity on self-esteem as measured by the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. One hundred and twenty-one reports submitted by the employment specialists post intervention were assessed through a qualitative approach based on thematic analysis. Statistical analyses indicate that vocational activity might be beneficial for self-esteem. Qualitative analysis indicate that vocational activity may provide opportunities for experiencing capability, achievement, and positive social interaction, and be beneficial for well-being, self-confidence, and self-esteem. Vocational activity may be beneficial for well-being and self-esteem among people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Statistical analysis indicate that vocational activity may have a positive effect on self-esteem, and there was a non-significant trend indicating that competitive employment may be particularly favourable. However, more research is needed regarding potential differences in effect between types of vocational activity.
