<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3>
<p class="a-plus-plus">Prison conditions and the treatment of incarcerated individuals in Chile have improved a great deal when compared to the end-of-the-dictatorship period at the beginning of the 1990s. Along with rapid societal changes over the last decade, the Chilean prison system has been transformed in many ways. Today, human rights are more visible within the prison system through a variety of indicators, both quantitative and qualitative. On the other hand, it still has pending tasks and faces new challenges, such as: historical deficit on infrastructure and material conditions, violence inside prison walls, insufficient program access, the COVID-19 crisis, changes in its population, or the threat of organized crime. Although Chile is currently under a democratic regime, the authoritarian legacy still persists and can be traced to how the prison system is operated and structured. Today, the prison service depends on the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights and houses about 45,000 incarcerated individuals, a rate of approximately 236 per 100,000 inhabitants (ICPS, <span class="a-plus-plus citation-ref citationid-c-r32">2022</span>). Some have argued that the Chilean prison system is in better shape than neighboring countries, but others criticize its similarities to the rest of the region, which are far from adequate standards when compared to developed countries. This paper utilizes quantitative and qualitative data to describe some of the efforts that have been made to improve the human rights of the incarcerated, critically analyze some pending challenges, and identify current roles and opportunities for social work professionals inside Chilean prisons.</p>

<p>Feminist Theory, Ahead of Print. <br>Drawing on thirty qualitative in-depth interviews with a diverse group of feminist activists who are mainly active online, this article analyses how research participants construct and portray ‘activists’ and ‘influencers’. One theme that emerged from the data is the commercial orientation of influencers, the monetisation of their activities online and how this differs from activist pursuits. Activism, by contrast, was constructed as focused on making social change, and not driven by commercial interests. This article argues that the research participants’ discussion of the differences between ‘influencer’ and ‘activist’, and the attribution of monetisation to influencers, underplays the ways in which market logics help to structure contemporary forms of activism that take place in the digital economy. Second, the article places the investment in forms of activism that are uncompromised by commercial pursuits in the wider context of feminised and exclusionary cultures of perfection. Lastly, the article reflects on common constructions of influencing as a feminised as well as trivial pursuit and cautions against accounts that uncritically present influencing as trivial in contrast to activism, which is considered more serious.</p>

<p>Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences, Ahead of Print. <br>Prior research has explored the relationship between disasters and the personal well-being of migrants in the United States. The current study retrospectively evaluates the subjective well-being of Puerto Rican post-disaster migrants before migration, after migration (and after the return migration to Puerto Rico of a small subset of the sample), and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Utilizing both Wilcoxon Signed Rank and independent samples t-tests, we find that stateside and return migrants experience declines in self-reported mental health after migration and return migration (before the COVID-19 pandemic) and during the pandemic. In addition, we find that return migrants report worse mental health, more negative emotions, and fewer positive emotions than migrants who remained stateside. Our findings have implications for our understanding of Puerto Ricans’ subjective well-being and mental health. Directions for future research on post-disaster climate migration, and particularly the subjective well-being of return migrants, are discussed.</p>

<h2>Abstract</h2>
<p>The organizational theory approach to public administration emphasizes that organizational features of public bureaucracies shape civil servants’ role perceptions and opinions. This study brings forward a novel refinement of this theoretical framework by arguing that such processes of organizational resocialization require <i>intertemporal</i> consistency of the organizational environment. We empirically test this proposition by combining individual-level longitudinal data from a panel of Norwegian civil servants (1986–2016; <i>N</i> ≈ 375) with information about organizational changes in ministerial structures since 1945. Using individuals’ task portfolio as our main organizational “influencer” of interest, we confirm that the impact of individuals’ task portfolio on their role perceptions <i>only</i> strengthens over time for individuals working in ministries with a high level of organizational stability. This finding adds an important scope condition—namely, intertemporal stability—to the traditional organizational theory argument about what shapes civil servants’ role perceptions and opinions.</p>

<h2>Abstract</h2>
<p>This paper explores the affective and material impacts of the reconfiguration of caring on disabled people’s lives during the pandemic. We draw on a series of focus groups and interviews with a group of nine disabled people with mobility or sensory impairments, many of whom were politically active in the arena of disability rights and independent living. This work forms part of a wider project re-imagining care practices and policies. We reveal the interplay of emotion, affect and socio-material conditions in disabled people’s pandemic lives and reflect on how pre-existing diminished care landscapes compounded COVID-19’s impacts. With support services shuttered and people confined at home, many disabled people experienced a renewed dependence on family care or found their care needs reduced to functional tasks undertaken by rota-filling workers. We document participants’ emotional experiences of loss, fear and anger deriving from changes in their one-to-one care interactions and arrangements but also wider societal narratives positioning disabled people as both vulnerable to, and carriers of, disease. Drawing together the crisis’ affective and material effects, we demonstrate how disabled people politicized their affective experiences of anger and hope through online organizing to challenge the diminution of supports and demand affective justice from the care system.</p>
