<p>Journal of Social Work, Ahead of Print. <br>SummaryThis article concerns interpreter-mediated Mental Health Act (MHA) (1983) assessments where either a signed or spoken language interpreter is required. It reports data from 132 Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs) in England who have direct experience of such circumstances addressing expertise, training, readiness, and potential influences on the outcome when interpreters are involved. Quantitative data were collected by means of an online survey analyzed descriptively with additional open-ended qualitative responses analyzed thematically.FindingsMore interpreter-mediated MHA assessments were reported as occurring in hospital than in community settings. Although AMHPs were confident in their expertise, nearly two-thirds felt they were less effective when an interpreter was involved. The vast majority had received only minimal training on how to work with an interpreter. Recording of language and interpreter use in the assessment was revealed as inconsistent. Most AMHPs thought incorrectly that interpreters were subject to mandatory registration with assured minimum standards of qualification and expertise. Practical problems associated with the timeliness of access to interpreters and complexities of using telephone interpreters instead of face to face were raised. AMHPs expressed a wish for more training and guidance including expectations of the interpreter role.ApplicationsConsistent standards of formal recording of interpreter use as part of annual monitoring of the MHA are required to understand any potential inequities of outcome resulting from language mediation. Joint training with interpreters is desirable with more specific guidance and resources for working AMHPs and interpreters to promote best practice.</p>

<h2>Abstract</h2>
<h2>Background</h2>
<p>Older adults and individuals with decreased cognition often experience appetite changes and weight loss. As weight loss can result in cognitive decline, change in appetite may be an important contributor to the onset of dementia. However, there is a lack of relevant studies on this topic. This study aimed to determine the relationship between appetite changes, weight loss, and dementia onset.</p>
<h2>Methods</h2>
<p>A total of 135 patients with normal cognitive function, subjective cognitive impairment, and mild cognitive impairment who were assessed using the Neuropsychiatric Inventory 12 item version (NPI-12) and followed up for at least 1 month were enrolled in the study. All patients underwent a Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Eating problems were assessed using the NPI Eating Problems Score. Appetite and weight loss were assessed at the first visit by caregivers. Kaplan–Meier survival analyses with a log-rank test were used to compare the time to the onset of dementia between the presence or absence of the NPI eating problems, appetite loss, weight loss, or NPI depression scores. Cox proportional hazards regression models using the forced entry method were employed to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) for dementia.</p>
<h2>Results</h2>
<p>Weight loss was significantly related to dementia onset (<i>P</i> = 0.027) in the Kaplan–Meier survival analyses, while eating problems, appetite loss, and depression showed no significant association (<i>P</i> = 0.519, <i>P</i> = 0.326, and <i>P</i> = 0.317, respectively). In the Cox proportional hazards regression models, the MMSE score was found to be a significant factor (<i>P</i> = 0.021, HR = 0.871); moreover, weight loss tended to increase the risk of dementia onset (<i>P</i> = 0.057, HR = 1.694).</p>
<h2>Conclusions</h2>
<p>Weight loss experienced by older adults could contribute to an increased risk of developing dementia.</p>

<p class="a-plus-plus">Positive health behaviors (e.g., exercise, healthy eating habits, good sleep hygiene, treatment adherence) are important in ensuring optimal symptom management and health outcomes among individuals living with Parkinson’s disease (PD). While multiple factors may influence engagement in health behaviors, little is known about the occurrence of social control, or relationship partners’ attempts to influence and regulate another’s behavior, and its potential role in the adoption of health behaviors among individuals with PD.</p>
<p> <br><span class="a-plus-plus abstract-section id-a-sec2"></span></p>
<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Methods</h3>
<p class="a-plus-plus">To better understand the types of social control attempts employed and begin to explore the association between social control attempts and behavioral responses (e.g., engage in the targeted health behavior, hide the behavior) to those attempts, survey data were drawn from a cross-sectional, pilot study of married/partnered Veterans diagnosed with idiopathic PD (<em class="a-plus-plus">n</em> = 25). Participants completed self-reported measures of sociodemographics, physical and mental well-being, relationship functioning, and both the frequency of and behavioral responses to positive and negative social control attempts.</p>
<p> <br><span class="a-plus-plus abstract-section id-a-sec3"></span></p>
<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Results</h3>
<p class="a-plus-plus">Although the majority of individuals reported their partners engaged in positive social control attempts, half also reported negative attempts. Bivariate analyses revealed more frequent positive social control attempts from one’s partner were related to both positive and negative behavioral responses, and negative social control attempts were related to negative behavioral responses. However, when adjusting for covariates, positive social control attempts were related to positive behavioral responses, while negative social exchanges with one’s partner (e.g., general conflict), rather than exposure to negative social control attempts, were related to negative behavioral responses.</p>
<p> <br><span class="a-plus-plus abstract-section id-a-sec4"></span></p>
<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Conclusions</h3>
<p class="a-plus-plus">Findings lend preliminary evidence of the relationship between social control and exchanges and health behavior that may inform future, adequately powered observational and intervention studies that target interpersonal processes and health behaviors among individuals living with PD and their relationship partners.</p>

<p>Dementia villages are small-scale communities that offer shared housing, minor medical care, and psychosocial support in a neighborhood setting. Originating in Weesp, Netherlands, in 2009 in a village known as the Hogeweyk, the concept created a paradigm shift in dementia care, focusing on possibilities instead of disabilities. <p><imgsrc border="0" align="left" alt="image">Many health promotion programs are designed for older adults who live in the community. This research describes a health promotion program called “Remembering When” (a fire and fall prevention program). In 2020, a quality improvement project was developed to examine the effectiveness and impact of Remembering When among community-dwelling older adults. After analyzing the qualitative data collected for the project, an interesting observation of why older adults attended Remembering When emerged. Older adults might attend Remembering When because they experience social isolation and/or loneliness. The concepts of objective and subjective social isolation and loneliness were defined, and the implications of Remembering When around social isolation and loneliness were discussed. Secondary data analysis followed Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis steps. Four themes were generated: It is about me having choices, Joining the program as an old friend, We all need referrals, and I am housebound.
