Abstract

Decorative pictures have been shown to be detrimental to multimedia learning. This study aims to determine whether a decorative picture is detrimental only when it is attention-grabbing. In Experiment 1, we presented the participants with learning materials containing a decorative picture and asked them to rate the extent to which the picture was attention-grabbing. We systematically manipulated the elements of decorative pictures and identified position, size, and color as attention-grabbing factors. Based on these findings, we developed learning materials that included more or less attention-grabbing decorative pictures. Experiment 2 revealed that texts with more attention-grabbing decorative pictures were fixated on for shorter periods than those without pictures. However, Experiment 3 demonstrated that the attention-grabbing decorative pictures did not hinder learning. These results suggest that while decorative pictures can attract attention, they do not impede learning. Considering their positive effect on motivation, incorporating attention-grabbing decorative pictures into learning materials would enhance learning.

Health Psychology, Vol 42(10), Oct 2023, 723-734; doi:10.1037/hea0001293

Objective: Acute postsurgical pain (APSP), defined as pain within 3 months after surgery, is reported in most surgical pediatric patients, and a significant number of patients experience pain interfering with their daily life activities. We aimed to identify perioperative and psychosocial factors associated with APSP severity in pediatric patients undergoing surgery. Method: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and CENTRAL were searched from database inception to October 2021. Studies that reported an association between risk or protective factors and acute pain in children were included. The primary outcome was the magnitude of association between identified factors and APSP, as measured by standardized effect sizes. Results: Thirty-eight studies (7,936 participants aged 1–18 years) were included. Meta-analysis of 12 studies (1,192 participants) revealed child preoperative pain, pain immediately after surgery, anticipated pain, temperament, pain catastrophizing, age, preoperative anxiety, parent pain catastrophizing, and parent preoperative anxiety were positively associated with APSP. Child pain coping efficacy was protective against APSP. We identified several modifiable child and parent psychosocial factors as predictors of APSP severity. Conclusion: Given the small degree of association between identified factors and postsurgical pain, there is value in pursuing other factors that may better explain the variability in pain. Recognizing patients at risk for moderate to severe APSP enables early implementation of interventions to minimize pain burden. Interventions to enhance coping, an adaptive characteristic, may also help to reduce APSP. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)

Abstract

Adolescence is characterised by a peak in sensation seeking accompanied by gradually developing self-control skills. Adolescents typically show steeper delay discounting performance than other age groups; a feature that is transdiagnostically related to a variety of mental health disorders. However, delay discounting performance is not a singular mental process but involves both risk/reward and future orientation elements, usually operationalised as probability/risk and time discounting tasks, respectively. To clarify the specific relations between the risk/reward and future orientation elements of delay discounting and different types of mental health problems, two bi-factor models and a series of structural equation models (SEMs) were fitted to multi-informant (parent and adolescent self-reported) mental health data from a large UK study. A transdiagnostic promotive role of future orientation was found using bi-factor modelling to separate general and dimension-specific mental health variation; however, this was limited to parent reports. In addition, future orientation was negatively associated with conduct problems and ADHD symptoms, but positively associated with emotional problems. Risk aversion was negatively associated with conduct problems, but positively associated with emotional and peer problems. The findings highlight that risk/reward and future orientation elements of delay discounting play partly distinct roles in different mental health problems and can serve both promotive and risk roles during adolescence. Findings also illuminate which elements of delay discounting should be intervention targets for different mental health concerns.

Journal of Humanistic Psychology, Ahead of Print.
In this article, the author examines the thoughts of Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers on teaching and higher education themes, particularly the humanistic psychology approach to education. It reviews Maslow’s expert introduction of materials on psychology, literature, ethics, and philosophy in class, which demonstrates an interdisciplinary approach to teaching students. Maslow developed ideal core goals for college, emphasizing student creativity and experiences in the educational process, whereas Rogers tended to take a humanistic psychology approach to teaching. His philosophy emphasizes student-centered learning and client-centered therapy. Rogers considered the teacher a facilitator of learning, who builds relationships with students based on empathy, trust, and prioritizing of student needs, whereas Maslow adopted a hybrid position on education. His undergraduate teaching views included a student-directed curriculum and degrees of empathic involvement; yet he maintained a disciplinarian expert’s authority. His approach is also compared with that of graduate education. By contrast, Rogers’s view on education was homogeneous, making no distinctions as to what a student is supposed to learn at each level. This article compares the educational perspectives of two “giants” of humanistic psychology.

Abstract

Since the formation of the 2012 Coalition government, the UK has been subject to 12 years of neoliberal policy enacted with ferocity and vigour. This has comprised austerity measures including the retrenchment of welfare via the reshaping of the welfare state and public services according to business practices, ideals of individual responsibilisation and overwhelmingly, the notion of reducing the state’s ideological and fiscal responsibility for equity and social welfare. The neoliberal state has been conceptualised by Loic Wacquant as a Centaur, boasting a liberal head, yet one atop an authoritarian body whose focus is the designated ‘underclasses’, the socially and economically non-compliant. The Centaur takes away with one hand while ruling punitively with the other, specifically via ‘prisonfare’ and ‘workfare’ to compel submission to precarious and sub-par employment. Although compelling, the Centaur State is justifiably critiqued for its blindness to gender and focus upon the manifestation of neoliberalism in the States. By exploring the stories of 23 women in the UK with histories of survival sex working and problematic drug use, a distinct gendered alternative reality emerges of the operation and machinations of the neoliberal state. Rather than a Centaur, marginalised women experience the Scylla State, a covert, hydra-headed beast motivated by neo-Victorian ideals of ‘womanfare’. The operations of the Scylla State are unpredictable, replicate traumatising interpersonal experiences and variously involve surveillance, coercion, conditionality and the responsibilisation of victimhood to justify increasingly punitive responses to women’s survival strategies in the face of increasing trauma and deprivation.

We examined associations between childlessness and voting in Europe. We used cross-sectional European Social Survey data from 20 countries (n = 37,623). Our results suggest that there is a “childless vote” in Europe. Supporting our pre-registered hypothesis, childless individuals voted for parties that had visibly positioned themselves at the Green-Alternative-Libertarian (GAL) pole of the GAL-TAN (GAL vs. Traditional-Authoritarian-Nationalist) ideological dimension. The pre-registered explorative analyses of associations between childlessness and economic left–right ideology or other policy positions of the party for which the individual had voted did not yield results. Explorative analyses suggested in the review process showed that self-rated religiosity was independently associated with childlessness, but ideological left–right self-placement or self-ratings of political attitudes were not. Our results suggest a new demographic prognostic of vote choice, thus adding to the literature on demographic processes associated with political dynamics.
