<p>Informal caregivers experience a great deal of stress due to care-related duties and responsibilities. Caregiving stress has the ability to impact caregivers’ physical health but has been largely understudied in caregivers of children with a chronic illness. In this study, we examine the associations of stress to both caregiver self-rated health and biomarkers of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and immune systems (arginine vasopressin, c-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor alpha). We also examine whether coping style (proactive, avoidant, support coping) buffers the links of stress to health across 2 different stressor contexts: caregiving for a child with a rare or undiagnosed disease (<em>n</em> = 101) and caregiving for a typically developing child (<em>n</em> = 69). Results indicated perceived stress was linked to worse self-rated health; however, stress was only linked to biological markers of health for caregivers of typically developing children. Results also suggest that coping style may moderate some of the links of stress to health, as proactive coping was linked to lower arginine vasopressin. However, models also suggested the role of coping style may differ based on caregiving context, as support coping was linked to better health only for caregivers of typically developing children, and more proactive coping overall was observed in the rare disease context. Future research should continue to examine how stress and coping interact within different caregiving contexts to protect caregiver health and well-being. <div class="abstract" data-abstract-type="normal">
<p>Although irritability is common in youth, research on treatment is in its infancy. Threat biases are more pronounced in irritable compared to low irritable youth, similar to evidence found in anxious youth. Therefore, interventions targeting these biases may be promising for reducing irritability. This study utilised a multiple baseline case series design to determine the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of positive search training (PST) for irritable children. Three children were included who met criteria for a principal diagnosis of Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD), and a secondary diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). PST was feasible with two of the three participants; one child refused to continue after one session. For the two participants who completed PST, acceptability was stable with moderate-to-high ratings of engagement and enjoyment, and high and stable treatment-relevant verbalisations of the key strategies. Both cases showed declines in DMDD severity across treatment and no longer met criteria at post-treatment. Both participants met criteria for Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) at post-treatment (considered less severe for irritability than DMDD). Declines in parent-reported irritability occurred for both cases, however some returns to baseline were observed. Overall, PST for irritable youth shows promise as an acceptable and feasible intervention. Further studies are needed combining PST with strategies for secondary diagnoses, given its high comorbidity with disruptive behaviour disorders.</p>

<p>Translational Issues in Psychological Science, Vol 9(2), Jun 2023, 103-106; doi:10.1037/tps0000374</p>
<p>Mental and physical health are closely tied, and a deeper understanding of how the mind, brain, and body are connected has the potential to substantially improve health outcomes. In particular, a translational approach that integrates research on mind–brain–body connections at multiple levels of analysis (e.g., basic science, patient-oriented, and intervention science perspectives) can contribute toward the development, targeting, and implementation of mechanistically informed and effective interventions to improve mental and physical health. The three articles in this special issue elucidate a range of biological and behavioral mechanisms within the mind, brain, and body that contribute to health. The varying levels of analysis examined in each article complement each other to arrive at deeper insights than any one article would alone. Taken together, their research highlights the added value of moving from separate mental and physical health care models toward holistic care, and of considering how context may inform “for whom” a given intervention is most effective. <p>
<p>
<st>Introduction</st>
</p>
<p>On 29 April 2021, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced its intention to prohibit menthol as a characterising flavour in cigarettes.</p>
<p>
<st>Methods</st>
</p>
<p>We assessed the changes in cigarette sales associated with the FDA’s announcement using interrupted time series analysis based on monthly retail point-of-sale data on cigarettes from the NielsenIQ Local Trade Area (LTA) data from September 2019 to April 2022. Main outcome variables included LTA-level monthly menthol and non-menthol cigarette sales per 1000-persons.</p>
<p>
<st>Results</st>
</p>
<p>Monthly cigarette sales were declining before the FDA’s announcement (menthol vs non-menthol: –1.68 (95% CI –1.92, –1.45) vs –3.14 (95% CI –3.33, –2.96) packs per 1000-persons). Monthly menthol cigarette sales increased immediately in May 2021 after the FDA’s announcement by 6.44 packs per 1000-persons (95% CI 3.83, 9.05). Analysis stratified by LTA-level racial/ethnic compositions showed that LTAs with a relatively higher proportion of non-Hispanic Black population (>8.94%) experienced higher spike in menthol cigarette sales in May 2021 immediately after the announcement and higher post-announcement 12-month menthol cigarette sales than expected.</p>
<p>
<st>Conclusions</st>
</p>
<p>Areas with a relatively higher proportion of non-Hispanic Black population are potentially at risk of experiencing increased burden of menthol cigarette consumption. Targeted community level cessation support in non-Hispanic Black majority areas may help mitigate the growing burden of menthol cigarette smoking and improve health equity. The findings of this study also suggest that FDA’s prompt finalisation and enforcement of such ban may help avoid extending the increased burden of menthol cigarette consumptions in non-Hispanic Black majority areas.</p>

<p>Urban Affairs Review, Ahead of Print. <br>Municipal policy leadership is shared between managers, city councilors, and mayors, all of whom vary in institutional power and resources across municipalities. Corresponding with their importance, scholars have established consistent measures of professionalism for Mayors and City Managers. Unfortunately, there is no parallel measure of professionalism for city councils. After reviewing the role of councils in local policy leadership and establishing the need for a systematic measure of local legislative professionalism, this paper uses data from over 4,000 municipalities to develop a measure of legislative professionalism for city councils. We demonstrate that considerable variation exists in levels of professionalism among local legislatures and describe the implications of this variation for questions of municipal policy leadership and local legislative representation.</p>

<p>School Psychology International, Ahead of Print. <br>As marginalized graduate students and faculty, we have stories to tell about our experiences within school psychology. Many of these stories center our oppression, trauma, and exclusion but some of them also center our joy and resistance. The purpose of this collaborative autoethnographic project was to create a counterspace in which we, BIWOC faculty and graduate students, could come together to engage in storytelling and build community amongst one another as a way to survive and thrive in academia. As a result of the counterspace, we are able to provide critical feedback and recommendations for school psychology programs to better support marginalized students and faculty. And we also offer critical hope and knowledge to marginalized graduate students and faculty who are currently in the field.</p>

<p>
<p>School Psychology International, Ahead of Print. <br>The relationship between self-concept and academic achievement that is commonly cited has primarily been found in studies of students from Western countries with individualistic societies. Thus, this relationship may not be evident among students from non-Western countries, which are thought to largely adopt collectivist cultural values and behaviors that are inconsistent with the way that students from individualist nations perceive and evaluate their academic functioning. This lack of clarity motivates the present scoping review about the relationship between self-concept and academic achievement among students from collectivist countries who study in elementary, secondary, and post-secondary schools. A final review of 27 empirical articles involving student populations across educational levels and from several collectivist countries provided support for the same general relationship between self-concept and academic achievement that has been found in Western countries. Accordingly, the development of a favorable self-concept was associated with greater academic achievement. In some cases, this relationship was dependent on self-concept and academic achievement being measured in the context of a school-related discipline and on the time interval between the examination of both variables. Our findings provide insight into pathways to academic success that are effective across cultures, and we offer considerations for successful academic self-concept interventions for collectivist students.</p>

<p>In our ‘The Professional Virtue of Civility and the Responsibilities of Medical Educators and Academic Leaders’,<cross-ref type="bib" refid="R1">1</cross-ref> we provided an historically based conceptual account of the professional virtue of civility and the role of leaders of academic health centres in creating and sustaining an organisational culture of professionalism that promotes civility among healthcare professionals and between medical educators and learners.</p>
<p>
<st>Going beyond</st>
</p>
<p>We emphasised that any adequate understanding of the virtues, including professional virtues, has cognitive, affective, behavioural and social components. Some of the commentators expand on these components in important ways. Xuhao <i>et al</i> emphasises the importance of role models, especially in the hierarchical context of medical education.<cross-ref type="bib" refid="R2">2</cross-ref> The hierarchy of faculty in the senior position and junior doctors and other learners below them has characterised medical education for centuries. Xuhao <i>et al</i> rightly call for academic leaders to shape this hierarchy in a morally responsible way,…</p>

<p>
<p>Walk Score is a common index used to estimate how suitable the built environment is for walking. Although Walk Score has been extensively validated as a measure of walkability and walking, there are limited studies examining whether commonly used constructs of walkability are associated with traffic safety in children. This study examined the association between Walk Score and child pedestrian injury controlling for observed walking exposure in school zones in Calgary, Toronto and Montreal, Canada. Results indicate that a higher Walk Score was associated with more child pedestrian injuries in all three cities, even after controlling for walking exposure. School travel planning should consider established individual pedestrian collision risk and individual factors rather than assuming a highly walkable environment is also a safe pedestrian environment.</p>

<p>
<p>
<st>Introduction</st>
</p>
<p>Firearms account for the majority of suicide deaths in the USA. A recommended approach for suicide prevention is reducing access to firearms by temporarily removing them from the home. We sought to understand how firearm owners and those who reside with them view and might use voluntary, temporary out-of-home firearm storage.</p>
<p>
<st>Methods</st>
</p>
<p>From July to November 2021, we interviewed English-speaking adults in Colorado and Washington who own firearms or reside with them, using semistructured interviews. We used a team-based mixed deductive and inductive approach to code transcripts and identify themes.</p>
<p>
<st>Results</st>
</p>
<p>Half of the 38 interviewees were men (53%) aged 35–54 years (40%); 92% identified as white. The average age that participants reported first having a firearm was 20.4 years; 16% reported never owning a firearm themselves, only living in homes with firearms. Qualitative findings fell into broad themes: (1) storage with family members/friends, (2) concerns/challenges with storing a firearm with a business/organization, (3) importance of trust (4) outreach methods for out-of-home storage programmes.</p>
<p>
<st>Conclusion</st>
</p>
<p>Programmes for voluntary, temporary out-of-home firearm storage will not be impactful unless such storage is desired and used. Understanding views of potential storage users can help support development of acceptable and feasible programmes.</p>
