Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity, Vol 10(2), Jun 2023, 181-189; doi:10.1037/sgd0000532

Bisexual people are at increased risk for anxiety and depression compared with heterosexual and gay/lesbian people, but little is known about people who use other labels to describe attractions to more than one gender (e.g., pansexual, queer; collectively bi +). In addition, some people use more than one label to describe their sexual orientation, but research has yet to examine whether using one versus multiple labels is associated with identity-related experiences or mental health. To address these gaps, we explored potential differences in disclosure, minority stress, and mental health among bi + adults based on primary sexual identity and multiple label use. As part of a larger project, 669 bi + adults completed an online survey. Primary sexual identities included bisexual (53.2%), pansexual (26.3%), and queer (20.5%), and 55.2% used multiple labels. Compared with bisexual participants, pansexual participants reported higher disclosure, discrimination from heterosexual people, and depression. Pansexual participants also reported higher anxiety and lower internalized binegativity, but these associations became nonsignificant after adjusting for demographics. Queer participants reported higher disclosure, discrimination from heterosexual people, and anxiety, but only the difference in disclosure remained significant in adjusted analyses. Finally, participants who used multiple labels reported higher disclosure and discrimination from heterosexual and gay/lesbian people, but only the difference in discrimination from gay/lesbian people remained significant in adjusted analyses. Findings highlight the heterogeneity of bi + individuals and the importance of considering bisexual, pansexual, and queer individuals as unique groups as well as considering whether bi + individuals use one or multiple sexual identity labels.
A significant portion of doctoral programs in clinical and counseling psychology is grounded in the scientist-practitioner model, which emphasizes active involvement in clinical practice and research. Advisors are believed to play an important role in promoting research involvement among doctoral students but the precise mechanisms by which this occurs remains unclear. Structural equation modeling was used to examine whether or not the components of the advisory working alliance (i.e., Rapport and Apprenticeship) influence research productivity both directly and indirectly through the mediator of research self-efficacy. A total of 203 clinical and counseling psychology doctoral students completed measures of advisory alliance, research self-efficacy, and research productivity. Two models were tested. The results indicated that an alternative model with both direct and indirect paths to research productivity produced the best fit to the data. Controlling for year in graduate program, we found that the apprenticeship component of the advisory working alliance both directly and indirectly enhanced research productivity among clinical and counseling psychology doctoral students. Contrary to expectation, we found that having a higher level of rapport with one’s advisor was unrelated to research self-efficacy and was associated with decreased research productivity. We discuss the implications of these findings and the need for further research focused on describing effective advising. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)

Journal of Mixed Methods Research, Ahead of Print.
Mixed-methods research (MMR) can serve to bridge fields of study disconnected by differences in content, epistemologies, and methods. Such bridging can benefit fields that are interconnected in practice but generally separated in research, such as educational research with its silos of “general” and “special” education in addition to various topic area foci. We explored the extent to which MMR has bridged education research silos by examining the prevalence of MMR studying a single topic (disability) across three subfields: general education, special education, and disability studies in education. We found differences in the prevalence of MMR between subfields and journals within subfields. We discuss patterns in ways MMR may both reflect silos and be employed to bridge long-standing divides.

Abstract

Introduction

Health, social care, charitable and justice sectors are increasingly recognising the need for trauma-informed services that seek to recognise signs of trauma, provide appropriate paths to recovery and ensure that services enable people rather than retraumatise. Foundational to the development of trauma-informed services is collaboration with people with lived experience of trauma. Co-production principles may provide a useful framework for this collaboration, due to their emphasis on lived experience, and intent to address power imbalances and promote equity. This article aims to examine trauma-informed and co-production principles to consider the extent to which they overlap and explore how to tailor co-production approaches to support people who have experienced trauma.

Methods

Bridging Gaps is a collaboration between women who have experienced complex trauma, a charity that supports them, primary care clinicians and health researchers to improve access to trauma-informed primary care. Using co-production principles, we aimed to ensure that women who have experienced trauma were key decision-makers throughout the project. Through reflective notes (n = 19), observations of meetings (n = 3), interviews with people involved in the project (n = 9) and reflective group discussions on our experiences, we share learning, successes and failures. Data analysis followed a framework approach, using trauma-informed principles.

Results

Co-production processes can require adaptation when working with people who have experienced trauma. We emphasise the need for close partnership working, flexibility and transparency around power dynamics, paying particular attention to aspects of power that are less readily visible. Sharing experiences can retrigger trauma. People conducting co-production work need to understand trauma and how this may impact upon an individual’s sense of psychological safety. Long-term funding is vital to enable projects to have enough time for the establishment of trust and delivery of tangible results.

Conclusions

Co-production principles are highly suitable when developing trauma-informed services. Greater consideration needs to be given as to whether and how people share lived experiences, the need for safe spaces, honesty and humility, difficult dynamics between empowerment and safety and whether and when blurring boundaries may be helpful. Our findings have applicability to policy-making, funding and service provision to enable co-production processes to become more trauma-informed.

Public Contribution

Bridging Gaps was started by a group of women who have experienced complex trauma, including addiction, homelessness, mental health problems, sexual exploitation, domestic and sexual violence and poverty, with a general practitioner (GP) who provides healthcare to this population, alongside a support worker from the charity One25, a charity that supports some of the most marginalised women in Bristol to heal and thrive. More GPs and healthcare researchers joined the group and they have been meeting fortnightly for a period of 4 years with the aim of improving access to trauma-informed primary care. The group uses co-production principles to work together, and we aim to ensure that women who have experienced trauma are key decision-makers throughout our work together. This article is a summary of our learning, informed by discussion, observations and interviews with members of the group.

Statistics courses are intimidating for many psychology students. The current study introduced and tested an active learning strategy that incorporates puzzles to engage students and promote learning. This work drew on the evidence-based strategies of collaborative and game-based learning to create an escape-room-inspired classroom review activity. The activity was tested in an undergraduate introductory statistics course with N = 44 participating students. Across two exam review sessions, the collaborative puzzle activity significantly increased content knowledge and student self-efficacy. The results present promising initial evidence for the effectiveness of this novel pedagogical technique. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Psychology, Vol 9(2), Jun 2023, 133-149; doi:10.1037/stl0000200

The scholarship of teaching literature contains recommendations for how to manage difficult student behaviors such as incivility, cheating, and underperformance. However, there is little information about how college teachers should manage the negative emotions that can emerge in reaction to student behaviors. The current research investigated the phenomenon of teachers who develop an intense dislike of students. Psychology faculty (N = 215) and graduate students (N = 86) described their experiences with disliking students. Over half of the faculty (55%) and one-third of the graduate students (34%) had intensely disliked a student. Intense dislike was relatively infrequent with the largest percentage of participants indicating that it happened with less than 1 student every 2 to 3 years. Causes of dislike varied, but disrespectfulness, poor academic performance, and classroom disruption were among the most common reasons. When dislike did occur, almost all faculty (89%) and graduate students (89%) reported that they took steps to diminish its effects. Some of the most common steps were intentional professionalism, implementing objective grading procedures, and consulting with peers or the student. Nonetheless, disliking a student sometimes led to negative effects, the most common being reduced teaching effectiveness, negative emotions, and poor interactions with the student. These results suggest that college teachers should be aware that they are likely to encounter students that they intensely dislike and that they should prepare strategies to help them mitigate the negative effects of dislike.
<st>Objective</st>

Dietary interventions are effective strategies to mitigate multiple side effects from androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in prostate cancer, however the perception of, and access to, nutrition services is relatively unknown.

<st>Methods</st>

A qualitative study using semistructured, audio recorded interviews was conducted in men with prostate cancer treated with ADT for ≥3 months. Interviews explored (1) side effects of ADT and drivers for dietary change, (2) accessibility, barriers, facilitators and use of nutrition services and (3) the preferences for nutrition service delivery. Data were coded using interpretative descriptive techniques of textual interview data, and systematically summarised to generate thematical patterns, using NVivo software.

<st>Results</st>

Interviews were completed of 20 men with prostate cancer treated with ADT (25.5±20.1 months). Thematic analysis revealed four overarching themes—(1) the changes from ADT: men revealed that weight gain, loss of muscle and strength from ADT were daily struggles that negatively impact body image and components of masculinity reduced; (2) strategies to take control: several dietary changes were trialled and restrictive in foods and nutrients. Barriers to accessing nutrition specialists were the cost for the service and absence of a clear referral pathway; (3) importance of nutrition knowledge: demand for specialised nutrition services with knowledge in addressing side effects from ADT; (4) diverse patients need diverse nutrition support: that includes peer or partner support, and technology supported nutrition content.

<st>Conclusion</st>

Evidence-based nutrition services are an unmet need for men treated with ADT. Future work is required to develop services that can be readily available and accessible to improve prostate cancer survivorship care.

Walk Score is a common index used to estimate how suitable the built environment is for walking. Although Walk Score has been extensively validated as a measure of walkability and walking, there are limited studies examining whether commonly used constructs of walkability are associated with traffic safety in children. This study examined the association between Walk Score and child pedestrian injury controlling for observed walking exposure in school zones in Calgary, Toronto and Montreal, Canada. Results indicate that a higher Walk Score was associated with more child pedestrian injuries in all three cities, even after controlling for walking exposure. School travel planning should consider established individual pedestrian collision risk and individual factors rather than assuming a highly walkable environment is also a safe pedestrian environment.

Professor Victoria Stanhope, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at NYU Silver School of Social Work, said: “We are delighted to be working with colleagues within Strathclyde to help us strengthen our collaborative research focused on mental health and vulnerable populations. We can draw important insights between some of the mental health challenges within our urban environment here in New York and those evident within Glasgow; we want to understand better ways to reduce mental health inequities.”
