May 13th 2025, 04:49

ABSTRACT
Objective
To enhance our understanding of the processes of change and the interaction of symptoms, we applied a relatively novel method known as Dynamic Time Warp to data from low-threshold internet-based interventions directed at decreasing eating disorder (ED) symptoms and increasing help-seeking.
Method
Utilizing data from the Featback study, we examined how various factors such as ED psychopathology, binge eating, vomiting, laxative use, BMI, anxiety, depression, self-efficacy, social support, well-being, and health-related quality of life interplayed over a period of 14 months among 355 individuals at six different time points. Moreover, we explored which symptoms exerted a significant temporal relationship on others (with high out-strength) and which were most affected by other symptoms (with high in-strength).
Results
The sample included participants with different types of ED symptoms and high levels of severity. On a group level, we identified four dimensions with similar within-person trajectories: (1) Depression, anxiety, ED psychopathology, health-related quality of life, and self-rated health; (2) binge eating and vomiting; (3) self-efficacy and social support; (4) BMI, well-being, and laxative use. Directed analyses revealed that social support and anxiety had the highest significant out-strength (i.e., temporal lead), indicating their changes preceded those of other factors, while laxative use and well-being were among those that mostly lagged behind those of other items (with significant in-strength).
Discussion
Depressive and anxiety symptom severity were strongly connected to ED severity. Social support may be an important factor to address first as it may drive other factors and symptoms in patients with EDs.

Social care and support is in crisis – that is agreed across the political spectrum. The Casey Commission is Labour’s response. Its timescale may be too long, but we still need to ensure that it takes a holistic and radical approach. This is the transformation in social care we need, based on the programme drawn up by the End Social Care Disgrace campaign.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2025/journal-article-abstracts/fare-13184-2/) Hurt, loss, joy, and forgiveness: Foster care–experienced young adults’ relationships with their birth parents
May 13th 2025, 03:43

Abstract
Objective
This article explores young adults’ relationships with their birth parents following separation from their parents during childhood due to placement in foster care.
Background
Parent–child relationships often change through childhood, adolescence, and into adulthood, from dependency toward more independence and then mutuality, with much variation. Less is known about these relationships for young adults who spent some of their childhood in foster care.
Method
Follow-up interviews were held with young adults who had been previously enrolled in a longitudinal study during middle childhood, shortly after they had been placed in foster care. Qualitative analysis was conducted of 191 responses to an open-ended question about their current relationship with their biological parents.
Results
Relationships varied from very close and positive to nonexistent or distressing. Many young adults who had been adopted or had aged out of care reported close relationships and, conversely, some of those who had been reunified with their biological parents were later estranged.
Conclusion
For most participants, the relationship with their birth parent(s) remained significant despite some care decisions, such as adoption, that often lead to termination of contact with parents during childhood.
Implications
Young adults who have experienced foster care in childhood are likely to need support navigating relationships with biological parents through young adulthood, and this should be planned for and resourced.

May 13th 2025, 02:42

ABSTRACT
Background
The management of violence and restrictive practices in acute mental health units poses a challenge for the design of clinical nursing protocols that combine the safety of professionals and the dignified care of patients. Many of the strategies aimed at reducing seclusion and restraint practices include the use of standardised risk assessment instruments, preferably conducted by the nursing staff. Among them, the Brøset Violence Checklist (BVC) is one of the most widely supported tools.
Aim
To conduct the Spanish validation of the BVC and to explore its predictive validity for violence and for the use of restraint.
Methods
Prospective data from 115 patients consecutively admitted to an acute unit of a general university hospital were gathered to validate the instrument. The role of risk factors for violence such as gender, age, substance use or the involuntariness of the admission was analysed, both in relation to the BVC score and to the need for physical restraint in the short and middle term (72 h and 1 week).
Results
The Spanish version of the BVC maintains its predictive validity for imminent violence and guarantees excellent inter-rater reliability among mental health nurses. The score in the first shift after admission is significantly associated with increased odds of restraint at 72 h (OR = 7.272), and age with decreased odds (OR = 0.903), with no significant effect of the rest of the variables.
Discussion
The BVC is a reliable tool that seems to capture the risk for violence intrinsic to other factors, such as the involuntariness of admission. Its role in the design of non-restraint policies is discussed.
Implications for Practice
BVC is a useful and freely available instrument. Its Spanish version opens up its use in the fourth most widely spoken language.
