Mar 4th 2025, 04:39
In the UK over the past five years, more than 59,000 people have been identified as possible victims of exploitation – sometimes having been trafficked into the country for this express purpose. Some are forced into criminal forms of labour, like growing marijuana, or put to work in agriculture, hospitality, care or construction in illegal conditions. Still more are trapped in private homes in what is termed “domestic servitude”. And there is Patrick’s category, which is sexual exploitation.

Mar 4th 2025, 04:09
Journal of European Social Policy, Ahead of Print. Poverty has spread in Europe over the last decade, becoming a central issue in the political debate. Alongside objective measures of poverty, assessing the level of subjective poverty, especially among young adults, is important because of the consequences that feeling poor can have on household fertility decisions, consumption, and investment in human capital. Objective and subjective poverty do not fully overlap, and the sense of insecurity can lead to a feeling of not being able to make ends meet. For renters and mortgaged homeowners, housing costs can be a significant burden, and the risk of not being able to pay the rent or mortgage installments can affect young adults’ wellbeing and feeling of poverty. Our study investigates the relationship between tenure status and subjective poverty for households of young independent adults aged 18-34 living in 24 European countries, assessing whether rent regulation plays a role in influencing this association. Using micro-level data from EU-SILC and macro-level data on rent regulation, we estimate multilevel linear regression models with a three-level random effects specification: young household respondents (Level 1) are nested in country waves (Level 2), which in turn are nested within countries (Level 3). Controlling for income level and housing costs, we found that being a tenant or a mortgaged homeowner increases the probability of economic hardship compared to being an outright homeowner. By offering affordable options, rental housing policies can also reduce subjective poverty among young people who are not direct beneficiaries of these policies.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2025/journal-article-abstracts/pas0001360/) Development and psychometric evaluation of the Psychological Closeness to Suicide Methods Scale.
Mar 4th 2025, 03:37
Psychological Assessment, Vol 37(3), Mar 2025, 71-84; doi:10.1037/pas0001360
Psychological closeness to preferred suicide methods has consistently been linked to increased suicidal ideation, intent, and behaviors in past research. However, past work was limited by single-item measures. This study presents the development and validation of a multidimensional self-report measure of psychological closeness to preferred suicide methods. Samples of students (n = 489) and community-based adults (n = 278) with current suicidal ideation and/or a lifetime suicide attempt completed a series of self-report measures, including an item pool for the Psychological Closeness to Suicide Methods Scale. The Psychological Closeness to Suicide Methods Scale item pool was reduced from a pool of 54 items to 15 items, across four subscales, that are highly discriminant and of varying levels of difficulty. Measurement invariance was established across suicide attempt history, gender, and race/ethnicity, and convergent, discriminant, and incremental validity were examined. Distinct facets of psychological closeness were uniquely related to current suicidal ideation versus suicide attempt histories. Overall, these findings suggest that the Psychological Closeness to Suicide Methods Scale is a reliable, valid, and incrementally useful measure of multiple dimensions of psychological closeness to suicide methods. Clinical implications, limitations, and future research directions are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)

Mar 4th 2025, 02:54
Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Ahead of Print. This article develops and tests a theoretical model of volunteering during crises suggesting a dual structure referring to the mobilization of two types of volunteers engaging in different voluntary tasks. By combining theories on civic virtue and crisis adaption, I develop and test the theoretical model using survey data on a representative random sample of Danish adults collected during the pandemic in 2020. The results of the analysis support some parts of the model as volunteers fall into two groups. One group of previous volunteers had high levels of generalized trust and took on both ordinary volunteering and COVID-19-specific voluntary tasks. Another group of new volunteers had high levels of anxiety and almost exclusively engaged in COVID-19-specific tasks. The article contributes to volunteering and crisis research by demonstrating how both mechanisms of civic responsibility and crisis adaption influence volunteering during crises.

Mar 4th 2025, 01:51
American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine®, Ahead of Print. Objectives: Critical care is a place of frequent death, up to a quarter of those admitted die during admission. Caring for dying people provides many challenges, practically, professionally and personally. The aim of this study was to better understand the perspectives of staff caring for dying people in critical care and identify their priorities for improvement. Method: Three multidisciplinary focus groups of critical care staff at a large central London hospitals trust were facilitated with a semi structured format and digitally transcribed. Inductive thematic analysis was conducted to extract themes. Results: N = 34 (18 nursing, 7 allied health professionals, 6 medical, 3 clerical/administrative). The five themes were structured as priority statements: “We need to recognise” included the subthemes of being “sick enough to die” and potential rapid deteriorations in this setting; “We need to understand” with subthemes of perspectives on dying and prioritising time for conversations; “We need to connect” with subthemes of therapeutic relationship and physical presence; “We need to collaborate” with subthemes of critical care working and empowerment, and cross teams working; “We need support” with themes of experiencing support and making time to support others. Conclusion: We present an approach to identifying critical care departmental priorities for an end-of-life care improvement programme. The themes extracted will be used to evaluate systems for dying in critical care, aiming to empower staff to provide excellent care every time they look after a dying person. Relevance to Practice: This service evaluation identifies key priorities among critical care staff regarding end-of-life care. The insights can guide service improvements, such as tailored training and enhanced support for staff, to ensure better communication, collaboration, and quality care for patients at the end of life.

Mar 3rd 2025, 23:43
Abstract
The integration of science and religion in the contemporary Islamic world has been debated. This article examines the policies and patterns of integration of science and religion in Islamic higher education institutions in Indonesia, focusing on Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN/Universitas Islam Negeri) Jakarta. This research is a field study whose primary sources are obtained through document data and interviews. The results show that, first, the integration policy officially rejects the Islamization of science but combines religious and general sciences or vice versa. This integration is patterned by identifying core and auxiliary sciences, and if the core science is religious, then the auxiliary science is general science and vice versa. Second, integration is seen from the work of lecturers, which is formulated into five forms, as follows: first, integration of scientific themes that are related; second, integration of references; third, integration of all sciences; fourth, integration of philosophical foundations (epistemological, ontological, and axiological); and fifth, integration of Islamic science with social science and cultural science approaches. This research concludes that the integration pattern at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta is open, which allows it to continue to grow. This pattern can be referred to as open integration.

The U.S. Forest Service has terminated $75 million awarded to the Arbor Day Foundation to help disadvantaged communities plant trees. All 105 of the foundation’s sub-awardees have suddenly lost funding. In New Orleans, a group working to replant the urban tree canopy after Hurricane Katrina’s devastation almost two decades ago now wonders if it can even survive. In Montana, an urban forester’s plan to plant hundreds of trees in a popular park is at a standstill. The money was part of the Inflation Reduction Act’s $1.5 billion for urban and community forestry. The foundation was told the nature of the work doesn’t align with the agency’s new priorities.

Mar 3rd 2025, 23:02
Sexualities, Ahead of Print. Despite the growth in Queer diaspora research over the last 30 years, several gaps and tensions persist in the literature. This article outlines the current state of the literature and suggests future research agendas for addressing theoretical, empirical, and methodological gaps in order to sustain the field’s continued development. It draws upon the author’s empirical research on Queer Ukrainian diasporas to further highlight these gaps and justify research needs. Starting with theoretical tensions, these mostly concern difficulties navigating various understandings and applications of the term ‘Queer diaspora’. This is best represented by two main, yet opposing, conceptualisations of Queer diaspora referred to as ‘diasporisation of Queer’ and ‘Queering the diaspora’. This article discusses their current limitations and suggests how empirical research can further develop these theoretical frameworks. Empirical challenges primarily involve population gaps resulting from the tendency of Queer diaspora research to explore migrants from certain sending and receiving countries. Other empirical gaps concern improving our understanding of the relationships between Queer diasporas and factors including time, language, and digital spaces. Finally, through a discussion around methodology, this article joins the calls for greater adoption of intersectional approaches which also offer an opportunity to reflect on research ethics.
