The uninsured rate for children rose, however, jumping from 5.4% in 2022 to 5.8%, with about 4.4 million children lacking coverage in 2023. Coverage fell for children of all races and ethnicities, but dropped the most among Hispanic children, 9.4% of whom lacked insurance last year. About 4.8% of Black children were uninsured, as were 4.4% of white children and 4.2% of Asian children.

Abstract

Purpose
To evaluate a cutoff score for the Healing after Gender-based Violence Scale (GBV-Heal)—an instrument to assess recovery progress for survivors of GBV.

Methods
We surveyed 321 women-identifying GBV survivors living in the Midwestern United States from April to December 2022 to evaluate their mental health symptom burden, trauma coping self-efficacy, sense of meaning, healing progress, and recovery stage. We used Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis to determine the best cutoff score for the GBV-Heal.

Results
We found a cutoff point of 64 for the GBV-Heal. Those above this cutoff point were found to have significantly lower PTSD and depression symptoms and significantly higher trauma coping self-efficacy and sense of meaning compared to those below the cutoff point.

Conclusions
The GBV-Heal cutoff score can help practitioners recognize survivors needing additional support or resources as they navigate their healing journey. The use of this scale can promote tailored care for survivors seeking healing support in a variety of public health sectors.

Qualitative Inquiry, Ahead of Print. As a Black woman recovering engineer, I shine a light on the damaging effects of racial stereotypes in academia, notably on Black women scholars. The unchecked emphasis on relentless pursuit of traditional academic excellence often results in profound negative consequences. Drawing from personal experiences and illuminating case studies of high-achieving Black women who met tragic ends prematurely, I underscore the pervasive systemic educational disparities, with a specific lens on STEM fields. My work pushes for an overhaul of the system, aimed at creating nurturing spaces where marginalized communities can thrive with dignity and respect. We need to shift the burden of battling systemic racism endured by Black women scholars. It’s time we transition from an unhealthy emphasis on relentless individual resilience to a systemic reorientation that prioritizes fostering inclusive academic environments. An intentional recognition and confrontation of overlapping identities is the key to cultivating intersectionality and eradicating gendered racism in education. This vital transformation holds the promise of creating an academia that truly values and benefits from Black women academics.
