(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/meta-analyses-systematic-reviews/met0000498/) Meta-analysis of correlation coefficients: A cautionary tale on treating measurement error.
Jun 4th 2024, 10:39

Psychological Methods, Vol 29(2), Apr 2024, 308-330; doi:10.1037/met0000498
A scale to measure a psychological construct is subject to measurement error. When meta-analyzing correlations obtained from scale scores, many researchers recommend correcting for measurement error. I considered three caveats when correcting for measurement error in meta-analysis of correlations: (a) the distribution of true scores can be non-normal, resulting in violation of the normality assumption for raw correlations and Fisher’s z transformed correlations; (b) coefficient alpha is often used as the reliability, but correlations corrected for measurement error using alpha can be inaccurate when some assumptions of alpha (e.g., tau-equivalence) are violated; and (c) item scores are often ordinal, making the disattenuation formula potentially problematic. Via three simulation studies, I examined the performance of two meta-analysis approaches—with raw correlations and z scores. In terms of estimation accuracy and coverage probability of the mean correlation, results showed that (a) considering the true-score distribution alone, estimation of the mean correlation was slightly worse when true scores of the constructs were skewed rather than normal; (b) when the tau-equivalence assumption was violated and coefficient alpha was used for correcting measurement error, the mean correlation estimates can be biased and coverage probabilities can be low; and (c) discretization of continuous items can result in biased estimates and undercoverage of the mean correlations even when tau-equivalence was satisfied. With more categories and/or items on a scale, results can improve whether tau-equivalence was met or not. Based on these findings, I gave recommendations for conducting meta-analyses of correlations. The origins of austerity and its relationship to capitalist ideology and practice extend far beyond the 2010s, or even the 1970s. Despite the recent emergence of an ‘Austerity 2.0’, it never went away. It has always been around in some form or another, from Tories to Labour, liberals to Keynesians.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/journal-article-abstracts/sjop-13022/) Psychometric properties and cut‐off scores for the Swedish version of the Negative Acts Questionnaire: The full scale and short version
Jun 4th 2024, 05:56

The present study investigates the psychometric properties and cut-off scores of a Swedish version of the Negative Acts Questionnaire, the most frequently used instrument to measure exposure to workplace bullying. Based on a probability sample of the Swedish workforce (n = 1853), we investigate the validity of both the full version (NAQ–R) and the short version (SNAQ). We suggest optimal cut-offs for the NAQ–R and SNAQ, and for the subscales measuring work- and person-related bullying. Based on the cut-off scores we provide estimates of prevalence in a Swedish context. The factor structure and psychometric properties are comparable to the Norwegian original and the English versions of the instrument. We also tested the criterion validity using 11 outcome and antecedent variables to bullying, and all provided support for its validity. The identified cut-off scores differentiate clearly when tested against the 11 variables used to test criterion validity in the study. The results showed that the Swedish version of the NAQ–R, including the SNAQ, is a valid measure of workplace bullying. To our knowledge, this study is the first study presenting statistical cut-offs for the NAQ-R subscales as well as investigating both the NAQ-R and the SNAQ simultaneously. The present study also provides some criticism against and suggestions for improving the NAQ–R, aiming to capture even more of the overall experience of exposure, ability to defend oneself, overall duration, and on- and offline exposure.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/journal-article-abstracts/7645766/) Does training beget training over the life course? Cumulative advantage in work-related non-formal training participation in Germany and the UK
Jun 4th 2024, 04:54

Abstract
Continuous training participation over the career becomes ever more important. However, most existing research mainly analyzed training at single points in time. This article investigates training dynamics and hence asks the question of whether training begets training. We provide two contributions to the literature: First, we analyze if previous training participation has an effect on later participation, leading to strict cumulative advantages. Second, by comparing Germany and the United Kingdom, we aim to explore whether these processes differ between countries with divergent skill formation systems. Using dynamic random effects probit models, which control for time-constant unobserved factors, and panel data (NEPS and UKHLS), we find that the accumulation of training experiences is mainly determined by initial education as well as job and firm characteristics. Still, previous participation plays a secondary yet noteworthy role, signifying dynamic growth in both countries, with higher effects for the United Kingdom. Thus, we show that only considering worker, job, and firm characteristics when analyzing inequality in training participation neglects a significant further mechanism that is rooted in previous training participation. We come to three main conclusions: (i) There is a potential amplification of early inequalities over time. Individuals who are initially on career paths that promote regular training participation are likely to keep and even enhance their advantage over time. (ii) On the other hand, our results also suggest the potential for individuals to break free from non-participation patterns. (iii) The inequality-generating pathways can be influenced by institutions.
