(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/journal-article-abstracts/practical_application_of_digital_therapeutics_in-4-aspx/) Practical application of digital therapeutics in people with mood disorders
Feb 4th 2024, 13:49

Digital therapeutics (DTx) offer evidence-based digitally-delivered high quality standards applications and/or softwares in the prevention, management and treatment of several medical conditions, including mood disorders. Nowadays, there are only three DTx officially approved by the Food and Drug Administration for mental conditions and there are still very few DTx developed in the context of mood disorders. The current comprehensive overview aims at providing a summary of currently published studies on DTx clinical applications in major depressive disorder (MDD), depressive symptomatology and bipolar disorder (BD), by using PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus databases. Fifteen studies have been selected (10 on DTx in depressive symptomatology and/or MDD; 4 on BD; 1 on MDD and BD). Literature on DTx in mood disorders is still lacking, being mostly constituted by feasibility and acceptability rather than efficacy/effectiveness outcomes, particularly in BD. More studies focused on MDD compared to BD. Most DTx on MDD have been developed based on cognitive behaviour therapy interventions while on BD are based on psychoeducation. All studies assessing symptom severity improvement pre- vs. postinterventions demonstrated a significant postintervention improvement. Therefore, despite the preliminary encouraging results of studies here retrieved, their methodology is still too heterogeneous to allow comparisons and the generalizability of their findings. Further studies are warranted, in more larger samples involving multiple sites, including measures of both specific symptom effects as well as acceptability, feasibility and effectiveness in the real-world settings.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/journal-article-abstracts/aap0000307/) Conceptualizing loneliness among a Hmong older adult group: Using an intersectionality framework.
Feb 4th 2024, 12:49

Asian American Journal of Psychology, Vol 14(4), Dec 2023, 340-349; doi:10.1037/aap0000307
While loneliness afflicts older adults throughout the world, refugee older adults experience heightened loneliness as a result of war-related trauma, loss, and marginalized cultural values in host countries. This study aimed to understand how Hmong older adults, an aging refugee group in the United States, conceptualize loneliness. This study was part of a constructivist grounded theory study employing an intersectionality framework to understand how community-dwelling Hmong older adults experience loneliness. Semistructured interviews were conducted in the Hmong language with 17 Hmong older adults aged 65 and older in Northern California. Using grounded theory analysis, data were collected and analyzed in a comparative and iterative process. Participants conceptualized loneliness as a negative experience with pervasive trauma. Loneliness was represented through physical complaints and emotional expressions and ranged in intensity as temporary and chronic. These experiences of loneliness were influenced by an intersectional identity, which varied based on the context in the premigration, displacement, and postmigration phases. The findings from this study highlight the value of employing an intersectionality framework to tease out nuanced meanings of loneliness influenced by social identities in the different contexts of migration, specifically for older and aging refugees. Implications for practice suggest greater culturally and linguistically responsive services informed by refugee older adults. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/journal-article-abstracts/the_tenacious_treponema__a_retrospective-1-aspx/) The Tenacious Treponema: A Retrospective Examination of Syphilis Treatment Disparities in Washington, DC
Feb 4th 2024, 11:51

Background
Since 2000, there have been rising rates of syphilis infections nationally with higher incidence among minorities and persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (PLWH). The purpose of this study was to determine syphilis treatment adequacy and factors associated with treatment delay.
Methods
This was a retrospective academic-public health collaboration with the District of Columbia Department of Public Health reviewing surveillance data of all primary, secondary, and early latent syphilis cases diagnosed between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2019. Data were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression to identify factors associated with delayed treatment >14 days from diagnosis.
Results
Among 1852 individuals diagnosed with early syphilis, 93% (1730/1852) were male; 48% (893/1852) were coinfected with HIV; 43% (n = 796/1852) were African American/Black, 27% (n = 492/1852) were White, and race/ethnicity was unknown for 17% (n = 318/1852) of cases. Among 679 PLWH for whom viral load (VL) was known, 41% (278/679) had a VL 10,000 copies/mL. Treatment adequacy overall was 96.5%. Median time to syphilis treatment was 6 days (interquartile range = 4–7). Factors associated with delay of treatment included refused/unknown race (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.95; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.00–3.79), and HIV VL > 10,000 copies/mL (aOR, 1.97; 95% CI, 1.08–3.58).
Conclusions
The factors we identified associated with delayed treatment may reflect systemic factors contributing to the increased rates of infection among key populations. This highlights the importance of targeted public health efforts with the goal of reducing transmission of both HIV and syphilis.

Feb 4th 2024, 10:46

Journal of Attention Disorders, Ahead of Print. Objective:Non-suicidal self-directed violence (NSSDV) is a significant and growing youth public health crisis. Girls with ADHD are at increased risk of engaging in NSSDV, yet qualitative studies with this population—to better understand manifestations, motivations, and developmental course—are lacking.Method:We conducted semi-structured, qualitative interviews with a sub-sample of 57 young women (32 with childhood ADHD, 25 neurotypical comparisons; mean age of 27 years, part of a larger prospective longitudinal study) regarding histories and manifestations of NSSDV.Results:Inductive and deductive analysis revealed several key themes, including self-perceived reasons for engaging in NSSDV (affect regulation, attention seeking, self-punishment, asserting control), impulsivity, secretiveness, and in some cases motivations for desistance. Conclusion:Findings underscore the importance of early education and screening, especially among high-risk clinical populations. Increased resources and supports for professionals, parents, and peers are indicated, along with countering the persistent stigma associated with ADHD and NSSDV.

Feb 4th 2024, 10:45

Journal of Early Childhood Research, Ahead of Print. The objective is to analyse the progress of a 2-year-olds classroom in a school in Cantabria (Spain) towards an inclusive participation project. The research, carried out over three school years, has been based on the qualitative paradigm and ethnographic approach. A variety of research strategies have been employed: participant observation; discussion groups; informal conversations; ambulation and child conferencing using image elicitation. We have analysed the transformation of the educational approach in a classroom for 2-year-olds into a pedagogy of inclusive participation. These transformation process have deployed through three practitioner enquiry cycles with different focuses: materials and proposals; curriculum as progetazzione; decision-making opportunities and child participation. These transformation processes have also allowed educators to move towards a critical ecology of the profession perspective. Finally, the teachers who enquired into their educational reality by listening to children, embarded on a process of transformation towards more participatory education.

Feb 4th 2024, 10:45

Journal of Health and Social Behavior, Ahead of Print. This study investigates how upward mobility context affects health during transition to adulthood and its variations by race and sex. Using county-level upward mobility measures and data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, we apply propensity score weighting techniques to examine these relationships. Results show that low upward mobility context increases the likelihood of poor self-rated health, obesity, and cigarette use but decreases alcohol consumption probability. Conversely, high upward mobility context raises the likelihood of distress, chronic conditions, and alcohol use but reduces cigarette use likelihood. In low-opportunity settings, Black individuals have lower risks of chronic conditions and cigarette use than White men. In high-opportunity settings, Black women are more likely to experience depression and chronic conditions, and Black men are likelier to smoke than White men. Our findings emphasize the complex link between upward mobility context and health for different racial and sex groups.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/journal-article-abstracts/03616843231220960/) Assessing the Impact of Media on Blaming the Victim of Acquaintance Rape
Feb 4th 2024, 10:44

Psychology of Women Quarterly, Ahead of Print. Along with the direct trauma of their experience, many rape victims also suffer secondary victimization due to the tendency of others to blame victims for their assault, particularly in cases of acquaintance rape. We explored the role of news media coverage in promoting victim blaming tendencies. In Study 1, a content analysis of articles reporting sexual assaults from two newspapers revealed a tendency for media to overreport stranger rapes and underreport acquaintance rapes, perpetuating the stranger rape as “real rape” prototype. More victim blaming language was also used in reports of acquaintance rape than stranger rape. Perceivers responded to these differences; a high victim blaming news article resulted in greater victim blaming compared to an article low in victim blame content (Study 2 and 3), and exposure to a high blaming article produced greater victim blaming in a subsequent unrelated case of rape and increased endorsement of rape myths (Study 3). These findings demonstrate the importance of the media in shaping public perception of rape victims, particularly in cases of acquaintance rape, and suggest that news media, legislators, and other visible communicators can change the culture of victimization through intentional efforts to delegitimize rape stereotypes in their reporting and dialogs.

Feb 4th 2024, 10:44

Psychology of Women Quarterly, Ahead of Print. Theoretical work on objectified body consciousness, comprised of body surveillance and body shame, proposes several negative sequelae of holding an objectified view of the self (i.e., valuing the body primarily for its attractiveness to others). Few studies have examined associations between objectified body consciousness and academic beliefs and strategies among adolescent girls, especially girls of color. In the present study, we investigated a conceptual model whereby exposure to Eurocentric appearance norms through TV consumption is related to body surveillance and body shame which, in turn, are related to academic beliefs and strategies among a racially diverse sample of United States girls. Participants were 650 self-identified Asian American/Pacific Islander, Black, and White adolescent girls (Mage = 15.45, SDage = 1.50). Higher Eurocentric appearance norms exposure was associated with higher body shame which, in turn, was associated with maladaptive academic beliefs and strategies for all three groups of girls. In contrast, higher Eurocentric appearance norms exposure was associated with higher body surveillance and just one academic belief, and in White girls only. Future work should continue to examine these associations among adolescent girls of color. In addition, we encourage educators to include body image content in media literacy curricula as a means of disrupting associations between Eurocentric appearance norms, body shame, and academic functioning.

Feb 4th 2024, 10:44

Journal of Adolescent Research, Ahead of Print. This mixed methods study investigates the beliefs about achievement, resistance, and activism of Black and Latinx adolescents attending six charter high schools in five U.S. cities. We report on both OLS regression analyses of survey data (n = 344) and thematic analysis of interview data (n = 26) collected during participants’ final year of high school. Quantitative analyses revealed that youths’ belief that their academic achievement represents a form of resistance against racism (“achievement-as-resistance”) significantly predicted their commitment to activism, and this relationship was moderated by participants’ school type. Youth attending “no-excuses” schools demonstrated a stronger relationship between their achievement-as-resistance beliefs and commitment to activism than their peers attending “progressive” schools. Explanatory qualitative analyses of interview data demonstrated that youth at no-excuses schools received strong messaging from their educators that achievement was the best way for Black and Latinx youth to resist racism. Youth also reported that their no-excuses schools did not engage students in activism and in some cases, responded negatively to student-led activism.
