(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/journal-article-abstracts/cbs0000344/) Exploratory study of the role of outgroup emotional display on anger and emergency intentional helping behaviour in an immersive virtual environment.
Apr 18th 2024, 14:54
Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science / Revue canadienne des sciences du comportement, Vol 56(2), Apr 2024, 113-121; doi:10.1037/cbs0000344
This exploratory research experimentally investigated whether following an illegitimate defeat, emotions demonstrated by outgroup fans (expressive/inexpressive) could affect individual anger and then prompt greater prosocial behaviour (i.e., intergroup help). More specifically, it was postulated that expressive/inexpressive outgroup emotion would first increase/decrease individual anger following an illegitimate defeat and that anger would explain the variability of helping behaviours. Using a virtual reality environment, fans viewed a game between two French soccer teams. Thirty-four participants were randomly assigned to the outgroup expressive or inexpressive conditions and were faced with an emergency situation involving an outgroup fan. Results confirmed that anger was lower in the inexpressive condition compared to the expressive condition and that anger mediated the outgroup emotion expression-intentional helping behaviour relationship. This finding indicates that inhibiting the outward expression of positive emotion has the potential to positively influence intergroup experience. (https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/journal-article-abstracts/ort0000709/) Minority stress and mental health in gay and lesbian youth: A comparative study of Italy and Spain.
Apr 18th 2024, 09:49
American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, Vol 94(2), 2024, 148-158; doi:10.1037/ort0000709
The present study was carried out based on the minority stress model. The purpose was to compare Italian and Spanish gay and lesbian youth on minority stressors and mental health outcomes and test the minority stress model in Italy and Spain. The sample consisted of 490 participants (307 Italians, Mage = 25.30 and 183 Spanish, Mage = 27.57). They completed an online questionnaire measuring everyday discrimination, coming out to family members, coming out to friends/one’s social network, internalized sexual stigma, depression, and anxiety. A multivariate analysis of covariance was performed to explore the effect of nationality on all measures. Structural equation modeling was applied to test the direct and indirect (through internalized sexual stigma) effects of stressors on mental health outcomes. The results demonstrate an impact of nationality on three dimensions: Spanish youth presented higher levels of everyday discrimination, while Italian youth had lower levels of both coming out to family members and coming out to friends/one’s social network. Further, in both countries, all stressors had both direct and indirect (through internalized sexual stigma) associations with depression and anxiety. These findings have some social implications: studying the effect of nationality can be useful in suggesting changes in political and social macrosystems. Additionally, studying the associations among these variables is helpful for intervening more efficiently, for example, clinically, on the impact of minority stress. Apr 18th 2024, 07:41
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and resulting restrictions on physical access to long-term care homes culminated in health declines for older adults living there and their families. Knowledge gaps exist regarding maintaining social connectedness when physically separated. The study aimed to explore family members’ perceptions of the impact that restrictions on physical access to long-term care homes had on the experience of social connectedness between family members and older adults living in long-term care. The method used was a qualitative description, using in-depth semi-structured interviews. Themes arising from inductive qualitative content analysis of 21 interviews with family members included: (a) lack of connection threatening mental, emotional health, and physical health; (b) navigating trust in the unknown; (c) feelings of stress and anxiety for family members; and (d) technology – an asset, but not for everyone. Study findings suggest more emphasis should be placed on supporting social connections between older adults and their families in the context of long-term care beyond COVID-19.

Apr 18th 2024, 06:42
Specialized geriatric services care for older adults (≥ 65 years of age) with dementia and other progressive neurological disorders, frailty, and mental health conditions were provided both virtually and in person during the pandemic. The objective of this study was to implement a software-enabled standardized self-report instrument – the interRAI Check-Up Self-Report – to remotely assess patients. A convergent, mixed-methods research design was employed. Staff found the instrument easy to use and the program-level metrics helpful for planning. Most patients urgently needed a geriatrician assessment (72%) and had moderate to severe cognitive (34%) and functional impairments (34%), depressive symptoms (53%), loneliness (57%), daily pain (32%), and distressed caregivers (46%). Implementation considerations include providing ongoing support and facilitating intersectoral collaboration. The Check Up enhanced the geriatric assessment process by creating a system to track all needs for immediate and future care at both the patient and program level.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/journal-article-abstracts/amp0001139/) Developing expertise in psychotherapy: The case for process coding as clinical training.
Apr 18th 2024, 06:42
American Psychologist, Vol 79(2), Feb-Mar 2024, 163-174; doi:10.1037/amp0001139
Routine outcome monitoring (ROM) is a major development in the field since it offers likely outcome trajectories and is particularly helpful for failing cases. However, ROM has not led to improved skill development more generally, and it is debatable as to whether expertise is even possible to acquire in psychotherapy. What is missing but crucial to expertise is feedback on the outcome of one’s actions in real time, which would enable responsive adjustments and improve outcomes. It is argued in this article that by identifying empirically validated moment-to-moment markers capable of differentiating later clinical outcomes, process researchers have uncovered the possibility of extracting prognostic information in real time, but one must develop the requisite observational skills. Multiple lines of research are reviewed to support the contention that real-time outcome information is available to guide responsivity and improve outcomes. And the typically hidden nature of these important signals further underscores the need for systematic training in process acuity. Given the pressing need to improve training methods, process coding training should not be restricted to research laboratories but should be exported to the clinical setting and tailored to the needs of clinicians for use in real time during therapy sessions. These are testable hypotheses that, if successful, hold the possibility of improving training and reversing the worrying trend of experience in psychotherapy being unrelated to outcome. (https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/journal-article-abstracts/conditionality-and-contentment-universal-credit-and-uk-welfare-benefit-recipients-life-satisfaction/) Conditionality and contentment: Universal Credit and UK welfare benefit recipients’ life satisfaction
Apr 18th 2024, 05:43
Introduced in the United Kingdom in 2012, Universal Credit (UC) is a welfare benefit that replaces six working-age ‘legacy’ benefits for out-of-work and low-income people. Designed with the aim of simplifying benefits and incentivising paid work, UC represents a deepening of conditionality in the British welfare state. Considering these developments, this paper quantitatively investigates the effect of UC on recipients’ life satisfaction. Data from the United Kingdom Household Longitudinal Study is analysed, primarily using a fixed-effects regression approach. Results reveal a significantly negative effect of UC recipience on life satisfaction. Robustness checks and alternative model specifications, including difference-in-differences and inverse probability weighting, confirm this finding. Additionally, mediation models give credence to the idea that UC also negatively affects life satisfaction indirectly by increasing psychological distress. Heterogeneity tests indicate that UC has a less negative effect on single parents’ life satisfaction compared to non-parents. Meanwhile, UC has a significantly more negative effect on the life satisfaction of people not in paid work (for reasons other than unemployment) than those in paid work. Discussion focuses on the potential effect of welfare conditionality specifically, and implications for future research and policy are explored.

Local determinants of municipal welfare agency’s implementation practices in Belgium
Apr 18th 2024, 04:42
In many Western countries local welfare agencies retain large responsibilities in the practical organisation of means-tested support. While this may lead to substantial differences in the application trajectories of prospective claimants, what has garnered little empirical research is how local agencies use their discretion to implement practices that may encourage or discourage take-up. In addition, we know little on the extent to which variation in local implementation is attributable to differences in local conditions. Focusing on Belgium as an interesting case, this article addresses this gap by mapping the variation in local implementation practices in specific aspects of social assistance that are relevant in terms of limiting non-take-up. We assess whether certain local political, socio-demographic or economic characteristics favour implementation practices, using structural equation modelling on custom-collected data on the practical organisation of social assistance application trajectories in 119 Belgian municipalities. The results show that local welfare agencies implement coherent practices regarding information provision, accessibility, trust and the locus of initiative in the claiming process. We find the political orientation of the municipality and the share of foreigners in the municipality to be related with, respectively, shifting the locus of initiative away from the welfare claimant and a focus on information provision.

Apr 18th 2024, 03:42
Paperwork has always been a central part of bureaucratic work. Over the last few years, bureaucratic procedures have become increasingly standardised and digitalised. Based on interviews and ethnographic fieldwork within welfare offices in Switzerland and Belgium, we reflect on the way evidence is constructed within social policy and cases built for or against noncitizen welfare recipients in order to show how paper truths are established and challenged. The focus on digital practices within public policy implementation highlights how it contributes to enhanced control mechanisms on the implementation level and how migration law continues to guide welfare governance for noncitizens. This allows targeting of the most marginalised groups, whose rights to access state support are institutionally impeded. Through database information flows, official forms, paper reports and face-to-face meetings, we further show how a hybrid form of bureaucratic work emerges, where direct contact with the client is still key, yet highly influenced by standardisation processes.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2024/journal-article-abstracts/awareness_and_acceptability_of_embryo_adoption-2-aspx/) Awareness and acceptability of embryo adoption among African women with fertility challenges in Umuahia, South East Nigeria
Apr 18th 2024, 02:48
Objective:
In African culture, a large premium is attached to procreation. An African woman who has not given birth to a child lacks fulfillment and marital security. Embryo adoption though an uncommon procedure is currently becoming an option for infertile African women.
Methods:
A study questionnaire was randomly administered to 220 infertile women at the fertility clinic. Data collated was analyzed using the EPI info version.
Results:
Most of the women were married (85.7%) and the majority were Pentecostals (71%). The most common source of awareness was social media (40.8%) and friends (34.7%). Most respondents were aware of embryo adoption (82.8%). All respondents most importantly, understand embryo adoption to mean fusion of male and female gametes (100%). For the majority of the respondents, their culture (94.4%) and religion (92.5%) do not prohibit embryo adoption.
Conclusion:
This study demonstrates that embryo adoption is widely accepted as a treatment for infertility among women in Umuahia, South-East Nigeria; a typical African society. Religion and culture in Africa are not barriers to the utilization of embryo adoption in Africa.
