(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2023/journal-article-abstracts/s13428-023-02248-5/) Negative affective priming: Reliability and associations with depression symptoms in three samples
Oct 22nd 2023, 12:22

Abstract
The negative affective priming (NAP) task is a behavioral measure of inhibition of emotional stimuli. Previous studies using the NAP task have found that individuals with depression show reduced inhibition of negative stimuli, suggesting that inhibition biases may play a role in the etiology and maintenance of depression. However, the psychometric properties of the NAP task have not been evaluated or reported. In the present study, we report data on the association between NAP task performance and depression symptoms in three independent samples, and we evaluate the internal consistency and test–retest reliability of the NAP effect indices. The NAP effect for both negative and positive target words had poor internal consistency in all three samples, as well as poor 2-week (Study 2) and 6-month (Study 3) test–retest reliability. The internal consistency and test–retest reliability of response times (RT) for the individual trial types were moderate to high, as were the intercorrelations between trial types. This pattern of results indicates that overall RT is reliable but variance in RTs for the different trial types in the NAP task is indistinguishable from variance in overall RT. Depression symptom severity was not associated with the NAP effect for negative or positive target words in any of the samples, which could be due to the poor reliability of the NAP effect. Based on these findings, we do not recommend that researchers use the NAP task as a measure of individual differences in the inhibition of emotional stimuli.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2023/journal-article-abstracts/evidence_on_buprenorphine_dose_limits__a_review-4-aspx/) Evidence on Buprenorphine Dose Limits: A Review
Oct 22nd 2023, 12:06

Objectives
As overdose deaths from fentanyl continue to increase, optimizing use of medications for opioid use disorder has become increasingly important. Buprenorphine is a highly effective medication for reducing the risk of overdose death, but only if a patient remains in treatment. Shared decision making between prescribers and patients is important to establish a dose that meets each patient’s treatment needs. However, patients frequently face a dose limit of 16 or 24 mg/d based on dosing guidelines on the Food and Drug Administration’s package label.
Methods
This review discusses patient-centered goals and clinical criteria for determining dose adequacy, reviews the history of buprenorphine dose regulation in the United States, examines pharmacological and clinical research results with buprenorphine doses up to 32 mg/d, and evaluates whether diversion concerns justify maintaining a low buprenorphine dose limit.
Results
Pharmacological and clinical research results consistently demonstrate buprenorphine’s dose-dependent benefits up to at least 32 mg/d, including reductions in withdrawal symptoms, craving, opioid reward, and illicit use while improving retention in care. Diverted buprenorphine is most often used to treat withdrawal symptoms and reduce illicit opioid use when legal access to it is limited.
Conclusions
In light of established research and profound harms from fentanyl, the Food and Drug Administration’s current recommendations on target dose and dose limit are outdated and causing harm. An update to the buprenorphine package label with recommended dosing up to 32 mg/d and elimination of the 16 mg/d target dose would improve treatment effectiveness and save lives.

Oct 22nd 2023, 12:05

Consulting Psychology Journal, Vol 75(3), Sep 2023, 202-224; doi:10.1037/cpb0000222
People with disabilities represent approximately 16% of the population but are significantly underrepresented in mainstream employment. Using the framework of the social model of disability, we applied scoping-study methodology to undertake a literature search of peer-reviewed articles published between January 2001 and October 2019. Considering factors at the individual, organizational, and systemic levels, the review focused on identifying the predictors of successful employment outcomes for people with disabilities to develop a conceptual model. The model then serves as the basis for a proposed research agenda that can allow scholars to fill important identified gaps in the knowledge base. This can provide robust empirical evidence to support effective managerial and consulting practice, as well as legislative and policy changes that can enable more people with disabilities to experience successful employment outcomes. Oct 22nd 2023, 12:05

International Journal of Play Therapy, Vol 32(4), Oct 2023, 197-207; doi:10.1037/pla0000203
With the increased cultural diversity among the child population in the United States, play therapists are obligated to ensure cultural inclusivity in their clinical practice and attune to their diverse clientele. A crucial aspect of culturally inclusive play therapy is the construction of an inclusive and therapeutic environment—the multicultural play therapy room. The multicultural play therapy room is an environment that invites cultural exploration and expression for all children. We conducted a recent Delphi study that resulted in a clear definition of what constitutes a multicultural environment in play therapy, specifically a culturally inclusive playroom (Ray et al., 2022). Further results from the study provided reflection and rationale for decision making regarding materials for a multicultural play therapy room. The purpose of this article is to provide play therapists with a list of materials that represent a culturally inclusive playroom based on research. Furthermore, we provide a rationale for decision making when seeking to ensure the cultural inclusivity of a play therapy room. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2023/journal-article-abstracts/exploring_the_intersection_of_autism_spectrum-4-aspx/) Exploring the intersection of autism spectrum disorder and eating disorders: understanding the unique challenges and treatment considerations for autistic women with eating disorders
Oct 22nd 2023, 12:05

Purpose of review
Autistic women struggle with high levels of both autistic eating behaviours and disordered eating behaviours, which might make them particularly vulnerable to develop eating disorders. Research investigating the presence and characteristics of eating disorders in autistic women is however limited, as is research examining the role of autism in the treatment and recovery of an eating disorder in autistic women.
Recent findings
The link between autism and eating disorders has mainly been investigated from the field of eating disorder research, with studies finding an overrepresentation of autism or autistic traits in eating disorders populations. Findings also suggest that autism or autistic traits are associated with a more serious presentation of the eating disorders, including a higher chance of a chronic course of the eating disorders. Most studies however lack comprehensive autism assessments, making it difficult to determine the actual prevalence of autism and its role in women with eating disorders.
Summary
Autistic women with an eating disorder seem to suffer from more complex eating disorders and seem to not benefit from current treatment modalities. This could be partly related to specific autism characteristics such as sensory sensitivities, which are not being considered by current treatment protocols. Future research needs to shed light on what underlies the eating behaviours of autistic women with an eating disorder, in order to help to adapt current treatment modalities to meet the unique needs of these women.

Oct 22nd 2023, 11:46

Human Relations, Ahead of Print. Why do followers’ reactions to perceived paradoxical leader behavior (PLB) differ? To answer this question, we draw from self-regulation theory and argue that making sense of a paradoxical leader’s seemingly contradictory behavior can pose a challenge for followers and requires specific cognitive traits and abilities that enable them to navigate such complex and dynamic environments. We propose that followers who lack these cognitive traits and related abilities find it more difficult to make sense of and navigate their paradoxical leader’s behavior, thereby perceiving them as behaviorally unpredictable. This, in turn, impairs followers’ self-regulation when working with such leaders, and leads to lower well-being. Conversely, followers endowed with appropriate cognitive traits can make sense of PLB and thrive in these environments. To test our propositions, we conducted two multi-wave field studies. In Study 1, we examine the role of followers’ trait cognitive flexibility in interpreting PLB; whereas Study 2 explores the role of followers’ trait self-regulation. The findings from these studies support our hypotheses, with an important implication: the efficacy of PLB may not only solely depend on a leader’s ability to enact these behaviors but also on their followers’ ability to interpret and make sense of them.

(https://ifp.nyu.edu/2023/journal-article-abstracts/2807720/) High Traffic—The Quest for a Reliable Test of Cannabis Impairment
Oct 21st 2023, 23:34

In this issue of JAMA Psychiatry, Marcotte et al report that field sobriety tests (FSTs) as administered by highly trained police officers are insufficient to detect cannabis-induced impairment in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel randomized clinical trial involving a large sample of 184 cannabis users. Although the group receiving active doses of Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in cannabis, performed worse on the FSTs as compared with the placebo group; about half of the participants in the placebo group were classified as impaired. These findings are in line with previous placebo-controlled studies that also reported high false-positive FST rates under placebo. The legal implication of these findings can be major given that FSTs are currently part of the evaluation protocol in North America to detect drivers who are cannabis impaired. Yet, the lack of sensitivity of FSTs to detect THC-impaired individuals does not come as a big surprise, as FSTs have primarily been validated to detect gross alcohol impairment at high (more than 0.10%) blood alcohol concentrations. To add to this problem, there is no cannabis equivalent of a breathalyzer to verify exposure induced impairment, as trace amounts of THC in biomarkers correlate poorly with cannabis-induced behavioral impairment.
