Nov 8th 2023, 14:46

Journal of Rural Mental Health, Vol 47(4), Oct 2023, 221-231; doi:10.1037/rmh0000237
Rural areas are disproportionately impacted by mental health and substance use disorders, drug overdose, and suicide. Several environmental and service access barriers are linked to these disparities, yet little is known about facilitators and barriers to care delivery that may impact client outcomes. Our study sought to explore these facilitators and barriers from the perspective of service providers. We conducted a qualitative focus group study with 206 professionals with a vested interest in behavioral health in 16 rural counties across New York State between March 2020 and September 2021. We started focus groups in person and then transitioned to Zoom during the pandemic. We audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed focus groups for themes. Multiple themes related to the delivery of behavioral health services emerged including invested and collaborative provider networks as facilitators and limited workforce capacity, state policy and regulatory issues, and scarce funding as barriers. Specifically, participants described how the way funding is allocated puts rural areas at a disadvantage and does not provide them with the flexibility or resources necessary to address the unique and extensive needs of their communities. They also explained how strict service quotas contribute to stress, burnout, and turnover among service providers. Despite these challenges, they described significant investment, collaboration, and determination that helped them provide high-quality services with limited resources. Together, our findings uncovered new regulatory and policy-related contributors to behavioral health care disparities in rural areas and suggested developing and implementing community-specific, needs-based approaches that leverage community strengths and assets. Nov 8th 2023, 11:18

Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Ahead of Print. This article is a comprehensive empirical overview of environmental protection and conservation nonprofits’ discourse on social media. To what extent have these nonprofits framed climate change in their public discourse and how has it evolved over time? How do organizational characteristics and resources affect their social media behavior? To address our research questions, we use machine learning with texts—specifically topic modeling—to track the activity of 120 environmental nonprofits during a 14-year time span on X, formerly known as Twitter. Our analysis of more than 1.3 million tweets shows that climate change, although not closely aligned with the missions for more than half of the top tweeting organizations included in our sample, has consistently been a prevalent priority issue on their social media agendas for more than a decade. This heightened attention to climate change discourse by the environmental nonprofit sector denotes their uniform efforts to inspire government for climate action.

Nov 8th 2023, 10:39

Abstract
In 2015, the World Health Organisation (WHO) introduced the concept of intrinsic capacity (IC) as part of a new public health model for healthy ageing. IC refers to the overall combination of an individual’s physical and mental capacities, and is promoted as a new positive approach to the health and wellbeing of older adults. However, there is still insufficient evidence that implementing IC leads to better care for older adults. Moreover, the current operationalisations of IC lead to confusion and redundant research. In this commentary, we discuss whether the concept of IC has added value for geriatrics, and describe the main issues related to its conceptualisation, measurement, and application. We argue that there is a need to clarify and validate the concept of IC, including independent evidence regarding its feasibility and acceptance in clinical practice.

An Associated Press investigation, however, found that the AI tool – among the few adoption algorithms on the market – has produced limited results in the states where it has been used, according to Family-Match’s self-reported data that AP obtained through public records requests from state and local agencies. Ramirez also has overstated the capabilities of the proprietary algorithm to government officials as she has sought to expand its reach, even as social workers told AP that the tool wasn’t useful and often led them to unwilling families.

Nov 8th 2023, 05:43

Abstract
The aim of the study was to understand structural and socio-political barriers faced by social workers to providing services to Arab-Palestinian young women abused in childhood, considering their multiple marginalisation. The literature has addressed the structural barriers in terms of the written policy and the social services provided to the Arab-Palestinian minority. However, little is known about how these barriers affect the provision of services to Arab-Palestinian young women abused in childhood from the perspective of service providers. To address this gap, twenty-one social workers were interviewed in depth. The findings revealed two main themes: (i) structural discrimination and the socio-political context of Arab Palestinians in Israel; (ii) challenges and structural barriers at the level of social policy. Our findings shed light on the oppressive othering of Arab-Palestinian young women, who feel invisible vis- à-vis governmental organisations. Thus, social workers working in the field should examine the needs of the young women and work in collaboration with senior government officials to promote culture- and gender-adapted programmes.
